I still feel quite a n00b to some extents on MH4U. I use Hammer mostly but have been switching between that and Long Sword, I've currently got the full Tetsucabra S gear. I've been using these links to help set up:
My usual pre-quest ritual is:
Dispatch Meownster Hunters
Dispatch Guildhall StreetPasser on quest
Check/Meld Talismans
Check/Request Wycoon
Set/Make decorations (Loads of Perception for capture quests, Attack, Razor and Grinder for hunting quests)
Eat meal (Usually going for Weakener buff but I know there are better, not sure what to go for)
Get items (10 Potions, 10 Mega potions, 20 whetstones, paint balls, hot/cold/antidote potions if needed, dash potions for egg/stone quests, max/ancient potions, well-done meat)
Any advice for suggestions? I just keep finding myself getting stuck on a mission for ages and it's often down to luck that I beat it.

@tigermask Not sure if that might be part of your issue, but never rely on "best weapon" lists. There's no such thing as a universal best weapon. You need to choose your weapon based on what monster you're hunting. By that I don't mean the weapon type, but a weapon with the right element, and upgrade every weapon you have to the highest possible version you can get at your rank with extensive farming.
Also, are you doing Caravan or Gathering Hall quests? If it's the latter: those are tailored for multiplayer, and monsters are good bit stronger to accomodate for up to 4 hunters. If it's caravan quests: how long does it take you to finish... a High Rank Tetsucabra, for example?
@Kaze_Memaryu
Thank you for the quick response. I'm currently on HR9 for caravan and HR4 for gathering hall. I switch between the two depending on how things go, I tend to do any gathering or capture quests offline in the Gathering Hall but I've been doing most of the hunting quests online.
I'd not really given much thought to elements with my weapons. I currently have Ice Blade+ and Accomplished Abetter for long swords and then Accelerated Hammer, Usurper's Thunder, Striped Striker (x2), Meaty Smash+, Carapace Hammer+ , Iron Devil (Equipped) and Great Gaiarch. I'll pay greater care with my elements now though, thank you.

@tigermask A quick hint: if you're unsure about a monsters weakness, look at the armor set of that monster. The elemental weaknesses of the armor correspond to those of the monster. Enjoy the hunt! ^_^
Oh, lord. I'm going to Japan in a week and I'm nowhere near G-Rank yet! I know I'll be able to get the DLC at USJ at any rank, it just sucks that I won't get to G3 in time for getting the Star Knight set. :c
Sounds cool! I'm at HR2, currently- Yes, I know. It's a long way to go. I just started the High Rank Caravan quests.
I'll update ASAP whenever I can get a room up. I'm usually not awake this late, though.
I am very new to the MH scene but am enjoying it. I have done several solo quests ( maybe 30), so I am starting to get the flow of the game a bit, but would still qualify as a noob. The thing is I really want to get into the game a bit more, although casually, if that makes any sense. I am married with two children, so I don't have a lot of fee time. What really interests me is the multiplayer aspects, of which I haven't tried. But from what I understand there is a hardcore following so I am a little apprehensive in jumping in to the multiplayer, don't want to disappoint. So for everyone that is new or can recall being new; what wold some tips be to breaking this barrier which I have created for myself?
@Ninimcgee All you need to start is the confidence that you're prepared for the multiplayer. Of course it doesn't hurt to have a full armor set (by which I mean five armor parts that share their respective naming gimmick).
But the most important thing is to know what weapon you like to use, and just have fun with it! In Low Rank, skill is beneficial, but not crucial, so there's a fairly good margin for error, and you'll be able to observe monster patterns.
That said, 30 quests doesn't say much yet. Try to focus on Single Player until you've defeated the first "major antagonist" (you'll know who I mean once you meet him), at which point you will have a decent range of monsters to farm materials from. Then you go and craft the armor of one specific monster, and maybe treat yourself to a fitting weapon before hitting online realms.
Just one note for online: Low Rank can be very chaotic, as many newcomers just rush right into the multiplayer with the very basic equipment (not a death sentence, but also not very smart). Don't get discouraged by that too easily, it's just how it goes.
Me and TJ hunting online. Anyone wants to join, you're more than welcome

Anyone up for helping me get to HR6, followed by Azure Rathalos farming?
Also, is it possible to get Rare Scarabs and Firecell stones at HR6? They (and Rathalos Tails) are all I need.

Edit: Er, I didn't just accidentally break a rule about posting hunt requests not long after someone else, did I? Assuming such a rule even exists.
No rule I know of. We're G crown rank. You're high rank. And firecell stones are g rank mostly, but can be found in volcano in secret area of high rank, and occasionally at blue nodes
