I just bought their first 3dsxl today but what I have noticed is that there is so few games for 10+year old girls. I did order the lego friends game but will there be more selection coming out for girls her age?

Most of Nintendo's first party games rated 7 would be appropriate. Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing, Professor Layton or even Pokémon X &Y. I don't think there are games just for boys or girls with Nintendo, they make games that anyone can appreciate regardless of gender or age. Just because a game has a male character doesn't mean a girl won't like it, many girls like Super Mario for instance.

Nintendo games in general don't tend to have much of a distinction between "boys' games" and "girls' games." For example, Pokemon has very wide appeal for both genders and almost any age group. My little sister (she's also 10) is one of the biggest Zelda fans I know. She's played all of the games she could get her hands on, read the manga, and owns merchandise like plush toys and a green Kokori cap.

Pokemon X or Y, Mario Kart 7, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf are probably your three best bets. Outside of that, I guess it really depends on what sort of things interest her. If she likes puzzles, she may like Zelda or Professor Layton games for instance.

There's that stupid "for girls" problem again. The gender makes no matter, no difference, she is just as capable of solving problems as any boy of the same age, and thus, there need be no distinction between the games for genders. The age is the only issue here, what she enjoys playing is something you learn by trial and error, or if you have been paying attention you can at least start with the genres.

Does she like stories? Is she big on puzzle solving? Doe she enjoy challenging other people or playing by herself? Which characters does she want on a poster to hang on her wall? These are clues, but your best bet is to give her the money, ensure that the ratings are set how you want them to be, then let her decide. Buying the first games for a child should be something of a special event, shared with their parent or older sibling, where they sit and discuss, play demos, and explore reviews together. Make finding the right games as much fun for the kids as playing them.

Freakyformes Deluxe
Tetris Axis
I suppose I should add the more feminine driven Style Savvy Deluxe.
And the one I recommend the most, because it's a really good game for kids. Nintendogs + Cats

As others have said, instead of just buying her "girl games" why not just have her go with you and see what kind of games interest her. I'm sure that if she wants to she is just as capable at playing a game that's "made for boys." Games like Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon are all big hits with kids of all ages.

And even if she does have more of a "girl interest" she can be creative in about any way she wants with Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Freakyforms and to a bit of a lesser extent in Nintendogs + Cats.
Style Savvy Deluxe shouldn't hurt either and if she's got an interest in painting Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone! might also be worth a look i guess.
If she likes to solve and create puzzles Pushmo and Crashmo might also be for her.

And that's just the more game-like creative side of the spectrum. There are also apps for making music (the Electroplankton titles which are more of a "relaxperiment" than traditional "music-makers" and the Rytmik line) and programming (Petit Computer) for example.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a wonderful life sim that can be played either as a male or a female. It's fun for everyone. It's my most played game on the system, and I'm a person who tends to prefer RPGs.

^That is genius. @indygal Do you have a smartphone of some sort with a data plan? Because then you could just go to a store and let her look at stuff and just doublecheck the metacritics score to make sure it's not complete crap (for a kids game probably 60% or above overall is good enough, if only because critics tend to look down on kid's games).

I'm also gonna mention a game nobody else here mentioned yet, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D if she'd like a 2D platformer. It's a port of the Wii game and it has a newcomer mode to help make the game easier, so if she isn't too skilled at playing games that will help her.

I'd like to contribute more but most of the titles I would recommend have been mentioned.

Oh, and Monster Hunter would be good for her ;P

There's a lot of Nintendo games for girls that age unless you're one of those people concerned about the fact that your little girl will question why the lead characters are men and why she can't play as a girl since that tends to be an issue with some.
