I got this game. I like it but seeing that I have never played a Donkey Kong game it is kinda hard, for me a least.

I actually recommend Donkey Kong more. As nice of a game as Super Mario Land is, Donkey Kong GB has a lot more content in it. If you wanna go by gameplay differences, though, Super Mario Land is more like Super Mario Bros. while Donkey Kong GB is like the classic Donkey Kong arcade game with a LOT more levels.

This is actually one of the few GB games I haven't already played to death. Mario Land and Link's awakening are nice but I've been through them tons of times. DK 94 is almost totally new to me. I'm glad they released something I'm not so familiar with.

I just cleared stage 2-4, and this game is a lot of fun. I really loved the first Mario vs Donkey Kong for the GBA, so its great to have a lot more gameplay similar to it. I just wish Mario vs Donkey Kong would stop the whole "marching minis" concept and just go back to the way it originally was.

This game is incredible. I don't know how I missed it on the original Game Boy; perhaps just the port-sounding title.

I can already say that it's a far, far better platforming game and use of the Mario name than Super Mario Land 1 and 2 combined. Those were interesting games... but didn't have nearly this level of polish and design.

EDIT - Also, I almost forgot: this game introduced Mario's "turnaround jump" 2 years before Mario 64! Fantastic, it's great to see the origin of that crucial technique.

I notice on the shop the screenshots are black and white. I'm sure the answer to this is going to be "nope" but is the Super Game Boy colour palette available? Or are the only options green/black and black/white?

Nope just green/black and white.
Not a big deal though really. The added color palette of the super Gameboy was just a minor enhancement.
3DS VC games are supposed to be like they were on the original Gameboy. Only GB color games will be in full color when they arrive on the shop.

You can add the Game Boy border by pressing Start and Select as you boot up the game. It is a neat touch.

A bit disappointing (though what I expected) as the colour worked well in some parts (especially map/bonus screens). Of course a lot of SGB games didn't offer anything other than a fancy border so in some cases it won't make much difference at all.

Yeah the super gameboy enhanced games weren't even really in full color. It was just a few basic shades.
At least the Gameboy color games will be fully colorized.

I'm still disappointed though, Donkey Kong looks so much better when playing the cartridge on my Gameboy Advance in color. Even the palettes in the SNES Super Gameboy adapter made the old Gameboy games so much better. I won't be buying any Gameboy games on Virtual Console because of this, I'd rather buy the cartridge.

This is the best Donkey Kong handheld game, and maybe the best overall Donkey Kong (if I wouldn't love the DKC series so much).

The pros:
It's original Donkey Kong gameplay - no spin off like DKC series. That's what hardcore Donkey Kong / Donkey Kong Jr. fans have been waiting for!
101 stages of perfect level design, graphics, gameplay and music. Donkey Kong 94 is the best handheld jump&run. The controls are flawless. Mario has tons of moves in this one. And I thought it was extremely well presented, being the first Super Game Boy game, with voice samples (HELP! HELP!), lots of color and other features no other Game Boy game before had.

The cons:
All "Mario vs Donkey Kong" games after this are lame.
I refuse to call them sequels. They're just another Mario/Donkey Kong spin-off that has nothing in common with Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong 94's gameplay.
What happened to the original Donkey Kong? I don't want more rubbish Lemmings clones. Bring us another Donkey Kong in style of 94!
So basically what I'm saying is, Donkey Kong is flawless and would be the first game I download from the 3DS Shop, when I get one.

Just a few questions about the 3DS release of Donkey Kong:
Is it 3D?
Is it in color? ...enhanced audio? ...that nice arcade border? Basically, does it have all the Super Game Boy features?

I got this game
It was a very nice surprice to see that such and old game could have such amazing gameplay and graphics(though i am not very used to see everything colorless.... as this is my first completely black and white game ever! and the green and green pallette just makes me feel sick).
Sometimes i start a level with 23 lives and end up with 8 after i beat it!
I am at the Desert right now, and boy, it was hard to get there!

You really can't say it wouldn't be better if it looked like this.

I just hope game boy games with color enhaced options (the ones in black cartridges) have the option to play in Game Boy Color mode, i don't think i would be able to play games like harvest moon in black and white!
Also, i really hope pokemon blue comes with a "Everything blue, player red" option like it was on my game boy color, because i'd hate to play it in B&W.

Unfortunately, it lacks any of those features you mentioned. It's still fun to play, though (even though I don't own it on 3DS because I don't have a 3DS yet).

I'm back (for the moment)!

Birdman

So, I've really been enjoying this game, but right now I'm stuck on level 5-10. Can anyone give me some clues on how to beat this one?

Exactly.

@Birdman- (I also posted this on your 'loggery btw)

Yeah for level 5-10 in DK '94, it must've taken me about 20 tries to get it right. Anyway, here's how I did it:

1. If you're looking to try and get all 3 Paulina items on every stage like I am, then get those first. There's one by your spawning point and two up above. Grab the bottom one and take the ladder block and use it to extend the rightmost ladder. Go up and get the one on the topmost platform. Then jump off and you should land on a bridge block. Build it right underneath your head as you fall, because otherwise you may fall head-first and die. Then build the ladder right in-between the two block holder things. climb all the way up and you should automatically get the third item. Now climb down before the timer runs out and fall to the bottom.

2. Now for the hard part: getting the key to the very top. Notice that there are 2 sets of 3 blocks: One at the top and one at the bottom. First, build a bridge 2 spaces above the block holders on the bottom (something like 5 or 6 spaces from the ground). Then grab the key and build the spring one space from the ground. Jump on the spring and throw the key. Do a backflip up onto the bridge and grab the key. Now build another bridge about 5 or 6 spaces above the first bridge (should be the same level as the crevice at the top) while the timer is still running. Then build a ladder connecting the two bridges, probably to the left of the screen. Quickly throw your key to the side, climb the ladder, build the second spring one space above the first bridge, get off the ladder, and grab your key again. Then quickly jump onto the spring, throw the key up, backflip on the spring, and grab the key before the timer runs out. Now you just simply jump to the permanent platform at the top and open the door.

Hope that helps. Or you can use Ninty's advice which is similar and should help as well.
