Just read this article and his has me bummed out, my eyes already hurt after extended gaming sessions on other consoles. Factoring in the 3DS factor, I fear will wreck my eyes even more.

While everyone was having a great time at Nintendo's big 3DS showcase in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago, some people weren't having the greatest time afterwards, with a Japanese magazine reporting widespread cases of discomfort after use.

Weekly tabloid magazine Friday claims that, having interviewed a range of people during and after the event, a majority of users reported signs of dizziness and/or eye fatigue, and quickly turned off the handheld's 3D features. While it was reported that holding both yourself and the 3DS completely still alleviated this somewhat, it still didn't take long for discomfort to set in.

"After playing for ten minutes, I started feeling a little dizzy", the author of the Friday article writes. "It was like being seasick".

Another user, a 30-something male, said after a minute's play "I can't bear it". Playing in 3D made his eyes "tired", so he had to play in 2D instead.

Then, in this video by respected news outlet Nikkei, a man interviewed complains that after five minutes of playing Resident Evil his eyes "got tired" (though everyone else interviewed was very impressed!).

It's important to note that this is all anecdotal. It's not hard science. And the 3DS has been played by large groups of people elsewhere previously without reports like this. So bear that in mind!

Send me the best you've got. Send me your strongest machines. The fight my brother fought, here, now, will end with me.

If it ends up hurting my eyes, I'll just turn it down and call it DS 2.0.

In traditional TV, the director switches between camera angles to give the illusion of depth, perspective, and a sense of space. But in 3D that grammar of thought has to be thrown out the window, because lots of cut could actually leave the viewer feeling disoriented, and actually ill. So 3D footage is characterized by large wide shots which gives the viewer a chance to look around the scene.
This is probably related to this.

Also tabloids aren't to be trusted...have you ever heard of the OJ Simpson Trial?

This. The original article comes from a Japanese tabloid and it all seems very anecdotal. It's probably just a controversial article to sell a few more rags.

For me, the 3D isn't even the selling point. It's the incredible library of games it has lined up. Of course, this will be a shame if it's true, but it still won't be a deal breaker.

really?

Well to each his own and I guess the E3 "we have lots of 3rd party developers with us thing" was mostly series I don't personally care about (and in the case of Assassin's Creed, will be amazed if it's more than a half-ed side game).

Well, I'm much more of a portable gamer than I am a console gamer, so you have to take that into consideration, too
Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Starfox, Paper Mario, Kid Icarus and Metal Gear Solid? On the go? Come on, how could I not buy it?

Not even a bit surprised. If your eyes start to hurt/get dizzy/whatever with the other 3D formats (like with the glasses), then you will most likely have similar reactions with the 3DS. Its the reason why they put a 3D slider on the device.

Yeah, this.

I don't think most people need to worry - all the concerns and "sickness" reports that the 3DS is attracting now is no different to what's happened with 3D movies in the past.

i.e for most people it's probably not going to be a problem.

Also, I remember having tired eyes after watching my first 3D movie. The second and third, though - no problem whatsoever. I suspect there's a bit of eye training and adjustment that needs to be made in the very short term with 3D as well.

But overall I like to remember that colour movies had people worried they could turn you blind. How many movies are in colour now?

@Waltz

I had the opposite problem. No issues when I saw avatar, but I could only take the first half of Tron; it gave me a wicked headache. Covering one eye at a time removes your depth perception and helps with 3D films (in case anyone else ever has this issue). You're right though, unless you normally have issues with 3D, you won't have problems, especially not after 5 minutes (maybe after an hour or two though).

It really depends on how the movie/game is "filmed," I think. I'm guessing the higher quality films really try to work the angles and such, so there's minimal eye fooling and maximum effect. It'll probably be the same with the 3DS, and some games will be more problematic than others. I'm guessing I'm going to be using the 2D slider a lot. I can see myself turning it up for spots that require precision platforming in 3D but keeping it down most of the rest of the time. 3D doesn't really do all that much for me. It's just a neat little gimmick imho.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.
