Topic: 3DS and 3DS XL. Whitch to buy?

I have both but I tend to use the normal one more. XL has a great battery life and bigger screen, plus I feel the circle pad is not as slippery when my hands sweat.

About the sound, I just use headphones for both. But I actually dig how the original has the plug in the middle.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

I have an XL and I love it! When compared to the normal 3DS the pixels on the XL are slightly larger, but for the more comfortable design, longer battery life, and of course, the bigger screen, the XL is the obvious choice!

I like my original Cosmo Black and would recommend that.
But I do want Nintendo to get the extra money so I'd say : go with the 3DS XL.

I could never go back to a non XL for a few reasons

1. The screen size on the original is too small which makes positioning the 3D effect to make it work far more difficult.(Much bigger "sweet" spot on the XL by far)
2. The original screen is too small period for my tastes for general viewing
3. The original is VERY uncomfortable to hold due to it's size and design.
4. The original is a fingerprint magnet and drove me crazy to look at without wiping it off constantly
5. The Original had/has the issue where there was not enough clearance between the screens when they were closed resulting in scratching of the screen without the use of screen protectors (which i hate screen protectors personally)
6. The original from my OWN experience seemed to be less durable on the hinge side of things as i had two break on me with VERY gentle use (opened and closed a lot but very gently so never in pockets never by the corners etc) the XL feels more solid IMO and the hinges feel more sturdy.
7. The Battery on the XL lasts longer (for for a handheld is a HUGE thing) for me using 3D around an hour or more longer this may be more if not using 3D.
8. The home/select etc buttons being that cheap plastic strip and not dedicated buttons feels really cheap and are annoying to use..i MUCH prefer the XL's dedicated Buttons.

The only advantage i see the original as having is the speakers are a bit louder than the ones on the XL but nether the 3DS or the XL have fantastic speakers by any stretch so i usually use headphones anyways.

I pretty much disagree with all these points, but number 5 is not true. All you have to do is put that white thingy that came with the 3DS and wipe the screen from time to time.

You are of course welcome to disagree but an explanation as to why would be nice. Not only because i am curious (Granted EVERY thing said on this thread well...95% of it is all opinion so there is no right or wrong answer) But it would also help the OP in his decision if you list reasons rather than just saying "I disagree"

As to #5 sure you could leave that in between that screens but that's a bit impractical and is poor design to be needed. And wiping the screen would help if it was only "marks" There are plenty of cases online where it causes unclean able marks otherwise known as scratches. (Or at least marks ingrained into the screen so badly you would have to risk using a chemical cleaner to remove them)

I don't see how you can really say it's not true.
You're not meant to have to keep something between the screens, it's a flaw in design... and quite the annoying one at that, because it's either make opening and closing your system a lot more inconvenient, use screen protectors (which I now do with my Zelda one) or live with permanent scratches (like on my old launch system).
It's one of the original 3DS's biggest flaws.

I believe they actually stopped producing the original model 3DS here in Australia more recently, so it's pretty much a choice between the 3DS XL or 2DS for us.
Not a bad move, considering the XL is pretty much superior anyway, and for quite some time they were selling side-by-side for the same price so there was little reason to choose the original model.

Are the XL's speakers really quieter than the original's? Been thinking about upgrading because my 3DS's shoulder buttons are wearing out it seems.

Noticeably This is one of the ONLY things i preferred about the 3DS OG model, that said i tend to use high quality headphones anyways which Blow either models speakers away, i was never impressed by the original models speakers either. But yes the originals speakers if i were to estimate?(Pulling numbers out of my ass here) Are about 25-30% Louder?

Grrr, wish I'd had one to compare, lol...well volume doesn't usually bother me anyways. When I'm home its usually quiet and I can hear perfectly, and when I'm out I have headphones too.

Yeah, honestly even at home i use them in most cases. Any handheld speakers iv'e experienced to date has poor sound at best. (Which hey i get it size and budget constraints) but using even a sub 30$ headset never mind a Quality one blows away the sound on any handheld ever created (and likely always will) i do understand however that not everyone likes wearing headphones/earbuds etc so yeah it's worth mentioning.

The only exception i find is if my wife is watching something i don't care for but i still want to chat with her i'll play using the speakers then so i can still chat.

You should most definitely get an XL!!! The XL is better in every way except the slightly lower volume max and the cheap-looking, kiddy design (the original just looks way better).

While like almost anything else said on this thread that's exceptionally subjective. Personally i find the high gloss plastic to look more "kiddy" then plain black matte on my XL. The Matte Black reminds me of one of my thinkpads where as the OG 3ds reminds me more of the shiny plastic on childrens toys. Not that there is a right or wrong view on that one but as as 34 year old man just figured i'd share my opinion on that one.

Well I never had problems with the speaker's quality anyways.

I find i'm a bit more picky about sound than the average consumer is anyways (Not quite Audiophile point) but still Iv'e just never enjoyed the stock sound from speakers on any handheld. I wouldn't mind personally paying an extra 50$ for a handheld if the speakers improved drastically (Though i know most consumers likely would disagree on the price point and it will likely never happen)

Damn I have images stuck in my head now.

I have the original Midnight Purple 3DS and glad I did not go for the XL for multiple reason.

1. Picture quality is much better. IF you can't see the difference then good for you. I definitely can after comparing them side by side.
2. Smaller sizes makes it much more portable. I usually put my 3DS in my Jacket's pocket.
3. The speaker is a lot better. Although it still sucks.
4. The XL looks and feels extremely cheap (although this is my own opinion)
5. The original 3DS design is way better and have more colors. My midnight purple is simply gorgeous and my wife loves her pearl pink.
6. The stylus looks cooler and it extends!! Though that just me being silly.
7. Cheaper. Nuff said

However it is true that the original 3DS makes your hands fatigue quicker due to its size and design. In the end both 3DSes have their own advantages and disadvantages, it is just down to your own preference. I'll probably pick a XL up IF they make a special edition for Monster Hunter 4 U. Otherwise I'm sticking with my original 3DS

Indeed i do @PvtOttobot and you make a good point about the Red/Blue but that's why i opted for Black/Black
