I might pick up the new TMNT and Another Crab’s Treasure eventually on discount. TMNT just doesn’t look like it’s a $29.99 game, $19.99 probably would’ve been a better price point for that one, and I’m not a big fan of Souls like games but that crab game has charm I can’t deny that

"It's certainly interesting to see the Switch continuing to perform so well when its eventual successor's shadow is looming so heavily"

With zero info about the eventual successor OR its launch lineup offerings, what is there for people to drop jaws about and save money for over a current gen console with proverbial appeal, a massive library of quality experiences and firmware hiccups largely ironed out over the years of memetically mocked but clandestinely vital "stability updates"?

Well… I mean, honestly… since Rebirth we really haven’t had a flat-out stunner of a game release, so I’m not surprised. The release slate has been positively barren the last two months and looks barren next month as well. We can only hope there’s big showcases incoming or else the evergreen titles will be all we see this year in most charts.

Yeah, yeah, you can make the argument for Dragon’s Dogma 2 if you want, but, as someone that’s played a good chunk of it, I think the game was a bit overhyped. It’s fun, but it’s not something designed to be a massive hit.

Seems 40fps is the trend for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S games. Why not make that a goal? I mean, this game seems like it could use a bit more optimization, but I think that could be a fair goal for Switch games like this that could use a bit more framerate. Not all games need to go for 40fps because I still think 30 is fine (don't stab me), but for more action-focused games that are harder to port, why not?

"I often wonder why 6 hasn't been revisited in any way. Maybe it just was perfect?!"

yes, and...

i think in some ways it would be exceedingly difficult to do some of the scenes justice, ironically. certain scenes have a dozen or so distinct characters talking at once (does ffvii ever have this? serious question,) and of course for example the waterfall sequence would be extremely weird with more realistic graphics, etc. it's an oddly ambitious game, made possible by the medium and the imagination of the beholder. if that makes sense.

it's kind of like King of the Hill, to me. I've often thought of KotH as kind of "hyper realistic" because it sticks to reality enough to almost transcend its medium, yet extends into surreality and cartoonishness on occasion in a way that wouldnt work in live action, or be very difficult to pull off in as believable a fashion. hope that makes sense 😅

I've always thought caring about FPS was pretentious and silly... It's like the disease where people think they need to throw hundreds-thousands of dollars every time a new shiny phone comes out with all the latest tech upgrades. Just like phones, gaming FPS and frame rates will generally keep improving over time. As long as I can clearly see what I'm looking at and it runs smoothly, I don't give a toss about that superfluous nonsense. I care about quality of the game itself like gameplay and/or story. Aside from FPS, seems like the visuals got nicer anyway. Not gonna miss out of a bonafide classic like TTYD just cos lower FPS.

Love all the changes mentioned in this Hands On - couldn't care less that it's 30fps instead of 60 for a game of this kind as long as it's consistent which is this case and as a price for such an improvement in the visuals (as much as I didn't mind even the original ones) - as they will definitely make what was already a fantastic game even better, I'm so looking forward to replaying TTYD thanks to this remake and for those who've never played it to finally have the chance to do so!

@Vyacheslav333 true. I forgot about that. But I am weird in that I still play the kingdom hearts games even though I can’t get the dual option in them. Kingdom hearts and resident evil are the only games I can tolerate in English even though a few resident evil games have the dual audio option. I am weird in that regard although I like Japanese voices the best. Back to your point, I should have said that lots of square games had dual audio. Still weird for them to not do it but considering what square is going through with games right now, I guess it’s not that surprising lol

I don't know what more to say that I haven't already said in other articles. My favorite game ever made is now looking even better than ever. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. 30 FPS is by no means a deal-breaker, especially when you consider Origami King goes for a choppy, stop-motion look with only a couple frames of animation for each action. That looked infinitely worse, in my opinion.

Speaking of backtracking, this is arguably the biggest weakness of the original GameCube game. That’s still the case in story chapters (looking at Chapter 2 in particular), but you’ll gain access to a Warp Pipe room which allows you to fast-travel back to the other towns. Yes, this existed in the GameCube version, but it’s been tweaked heavily for the Switch release – no longer do you need to break huge blocks to access pipes, nor do you need to remember which pipe goes where. Each blue pipe is labelled with a number corresponding to the chapter you visited that town in, meaning you can easily get back to Petalburg or the Great Tree by simply following the numbers. It might take a minute to unlock, but it makes those Trouble Center requests much easier to complete. And you can access it straight from Rogueport rather than going through the Sewers each time.

Thanks goodness
