I've been playing Super Mario Kart all morning! What a game, such a classic... such great gameplay. I've missed this game so much. I'm a little rusty though, can't even remember how to get the zoom start!!
@57. Yeah you're probably right. It's annoying as I had this week off work, and had it been released simultaneously with the US, I could have spent all week playing it!
Wow, what great news. I hope this is released in Europe before Christmas as I'd love to play this over the break from work.
Now all I need is Captain Silver on SMS and Alien Storm arcade and I'll have every game I like on the one console. (GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie and Jet Force Gemini aside).
I suppose if it was ever agreed to be released on a VC, it would be Microsoft's as they own Rare. It would be incredible, and a great step forward, if both Microsoft and Nintendo were able to release the game on their respective systems. I'm sure it would be one of the top selling games for both of them. It is such a shame, as this really was one of the greatest games ever made in my opinion. Such longevity and a great replay value - from playing it through properly, to using the cheats to pound through the levels with the 2x grenade launchers! And as for the multi-player... many a night after school did me and friends go round each other's houses, armed with a controller, to play four player... I was always Odd Job because he was the hardest to hit! Good times.
If you refer back to the posts about what games we'd like to see across the various virtual consoles, nearly everybody lists the same games. If Nintendo actually released the games everybody is crying out for, then I'm sure they'd see a pick up in sales. But churning out 8-bit crap week after week, of course people will lose interest. Where are the likes of Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings 64, and Earthbound? Games most people here would, I'm sure, pay to play once again.
I would be so upset if this came to Xbox and not the Wii. Especially as the Rare we knew and loved back then is now virtually a completely different company. But if they won't release Banjo-Kazooie on the Wii's VC, but have done so for XBox, then unfortunately it's a sign of things to come if this ever did get out of its legal loop. I was playing this a few months back on my N64, I still find it as playable and fun as it always was. I loved multiplayer with my friends after school, I was always Oddjob because he was harder to shoot!
I don't get the negativity around the sailing -- I always enjoyed it, as there always seemed to be something to do on the water. Board submarines, plunder treasure, climb those platforms, fight pirates, sharks, jumping games... to me there was never a dull moment on the water! Fantastic game, that I still think has the best visuals ever. My only complaint is that you can tell this game was "unfinished" - very few dungeons, and I believe some were scrapped entirely. Collecting the statues was a nightmare, but once you had them all, it was such a great feeling.
I am over the moon! I can finally eBay my SNES - this was the only game that was making me hang onto it. And Pilotwings as well to boot. Cannot wait for these. Fantastic news.
I agree. It's not like all their N64 games are sitting somewhere digitally, waiting to be plucked for the VC. I imagine they have to go through a rigourous process to make them downloadable, as well as all the testing etc. I think this is why the N64 games we've had so far are the earlier ones, and why Majora's Mask was the GameCube version and not the original N64 version. It's cheaper, faster and easier to port a NES game I guess. It's a shame because as many have said there are some great N64 games we'd all download... surely Nintendo would make a better return on, say, Pilotwings 64 than they would Wonder Boy XII: The Monsterous Dragon's Lair In the Land of Monster World VI.
I honestly think that this is the best video game ever. From start to finish, it is just perfect. I cannot count the number of times I have completed it (and each play through come across something I have never seen or done before). This was the first game I ever really played that totally immersed me. Such happy memories, I still remember my first day of playing it all those years ago! Perfect.
It is so good to be playing this again -- and so soon after its announcement as well! The emulation is similar to that of the GameCube version, the music glitches as you go between the various parts of Clock Town and so on, but it's still fantastic. Having said that, I downloaded it onto the Wii-- is it better quality on the SD Card? I've missed this game so much though, I forgot just how strange and eerie the whole thing was.
What great news about Majora's Mask! As has been said, I only hope that this emulation is better than the GameCube's virtually unplayable one! I also hope this doesn't take as long to reach Europe as Mario Golf for the N64 did as well! Considering the game's popularity I'm sure it will follow in the other territories soon after Japan get it... he says.
I had DK64, and was quite merrily playing through it, but in the end, the endless collecting and to-ing and fro-ing made me give up on it. If it came to the VC, I doubt I would get it. I'm more looking forward to Super Mario Kart than anything else right now, but that probably won't make an appearance until 2034 at this rate!
@feng - yep, I found Captain Silver extremely difficult on the SMS. It might be easier now we're all older and wiser, but I remember my first couple of plays I couldn't get past the pirate ship (second level).
I found this feature by accident when I pressed the select button. It's pretty cool, but I'm so used to the original music it seemed kind of strange...
What a great couple of releases! I have been longing to play Wonder Boy In Monster Land ever since I got rid of the Master System. Truly that was one of my most favourite games on that system. I just wish they'd release Captain Silver soon.
And finally an N64 game. I would have preferred Pilot Wings or Majora's Mask... but beggar's can't be choosers.

Argh, please don't be a screenshot of GoldenEye on the VC website, I almost peed my pants!
