Canon, sure Nintendo. Canon to the last Hyrule Warriors perhaps. Looking forward to seeing their eventual explanation of the semantics on this topic.
I very much enjoyed my time doing full completion for BotW and TotK. They were great games but were not great Zelda's.
However, the story for these games is the worst out of all the 3d Zelda's. And here we are, Nintendo visiting this Hyrule yet again.
What will the next Zelda be?
Will Nintendo placate older fans with a stronger narrative focus , more deeply memorable music ala the N64 era and actual dungeons? (Those tiny rooms you can beat in minutes ARE NOT dungeons. They are souped up shrines. Hell some shrines were longer than some of them)
Or are we getting more endless open world Ubisoft explorations?
Zelda used to be unique each release having a different gimmick. Zelda has already said open world is here to stay (yes, the first Zelda was open world - blah, blah, blah) So that means 3 Zelda games in a row that are of the one style. Utter pish frankly.
If they insist on this format going forward, the only way it works is if the core narrative happens to Link as you progress. And also, please take time to write a compelling story. If you are sticking us with this 2000s tower and map unlock garbage - at least give us a story worth experiencing.
The memory collecting element was awful in both games. Nintendo simply do not know how to tell a gripping story in an open world setting. These memories were a cop out that meant they wouldn't have to weave a story during Link's up to date actions.
Now I get it, the idea is your exploration is the adventure - but that is a cop out.
Imagine these games with - some weapons with endless durability, implementation of musical instruments and actual properly designed dungeons within in a BotW style map,
That could be the best Zelda ever. This was what I wanted for TotK and we most certainly got none of that. That is the way to satisfy old and young fans. The young ones get their open world and non linear progression obsession catered to and older fans get more classic Zelda design.
It's unlikely though, it that won't happen. Nintendo will just double down on the open world stuff and Zelda will further descend into a Ubisoft clone. Probably times the size of BotW and more story told through flashbacks. That any Zelda fan, new or old, would want that - is crazy to me.
It totally sucks Nintendo have abandoned the classic 3d Zelda format. You're absolutely correct only way we'll get to experience that again, is via indies.
