Re: Poll: So, Did You Get Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 For Switch?

mikejs78

Not yet but I plan to. Just finishing a playthrough of Galaxy 1 from 3D all stars, but given that the Galaxies are among my favorite games of all time, I do want them in 4k. I play Galaxy 1 at least once a year already... Galaxy 2 not as often as it's not as convenient to play on my Wii as on the Switch.

Re: Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase Announced For Tomorrow, 31st July 2025

mikejs78

@Suketoudara I doubt it. Directs are big for them. I suspect a big full direct in early September, and I wouldn't be surprised to see an Indie Showcase sometime in September/October as well...

We may get announcements like Metroid Prime release date as a Twitter drop or Nintendo Today, but for revealing new major games, that will be in a Direct for sure.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Mario Kart World?

mikejs78

Outside of battle mode and some tweaks to the engine, there isn't much difference and there isn't anything they added to Deluxe that was beyond the capabilities of the original.

The core gameplay was there in the Wii U version with the base 32 courses. Then they added the DLC which contained the remaining 16 courses and added characters, carts, and 200cc.

The switch version, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ,was released was mostly the same, - the base game plus all the DLC from the Wii U, some tweaks to gameplay, mainly to address some of the issues users had and to have better item distribution, along with new characters and kart parts.

The battle mode did introduce some upgrades, but nothing that was beyond the capabilities of the Wii U. But core racing was the same. Finally the booster course pass added another 48 courses to the game.

There will be DLC - some free, some paid if past history is any indication. Nintendo will fix some of the issues people have, introduce new modes, add new characters, karts, and courses to increase its value over the lifetime of the console.

Definitely a 9. When you look at MK8 when it came out on the Wii U, it wasn't the game it became by the end of the Switch generation. The courses are huge fun, the Knockout Tour is a great addition, the open world concept gives it depth, and the tricks add a lot of variety to the racing.. Few things I'd wish were different - more customization in vs mode, 200cc, multi-player free-roam, more varied rewards and content in free roam.

I suspect they will add a ton more courses over time, and probably a lot more free roam content as well.

Re: Opinion: The Switch 2 Is A Powerhouse For The Price

@Banjo- People who have actually seen the hardware and games in person have indicated that it looks better than Series S in several cases.

How can you say Switch isn't able to do anything at that level? We are just getting started with Switch 2 and haven't seen any finished games yet. Switch 2 also has Tensor Cores and Ray Tracing cores that simply aren't available on Gen 9 hardware.

As far as DF, they used captured footage from a Youtube videos of unfinished games, not actual hands on analysis. None of these games are done. We'll see when the console launches.

@rjejr It's a hybrid. What handheld do you know that can do 4k60 to a TV? Look, like anything, everyone is going to have different value propositions. For me, the hybrid nature of the Switch and Switch 2 is what make it appealing. I never owned a handheld until the Switch, only home consoles. And I love the fact that I can play AAA titles both on my TV at high resolution, then pick it up out of the dock and play the same game, 1080p on the train to work in the morning. The fact that it is running Cyberpunk with high graphical fidelity in a handheld is, in a word, stunning.

Is it as good graphically as the PS5 or Series X? No, of course not. But in an age of diminishing returns, and unlike the Switch 1, it's good enough for me and likely good enough for a lot of people.

Re: Opinion: The Switch 2 Is A Powerhouse For The Price

@CheapCheepBeach There have been side by side comparisons between some games on the Series S vs what we've seen on Switch 2, and in almost every case, the Switch 2 graphics looked better. Likely because it has more, faster memory and a whole lot of Nvidia magic.

Besides, you can't throw a Series S into your backpack and play it on the bus. The Series S doesn't have a 1080p 120 fps VRR and HDR display as part of it. And the Series S is in no way "three times the processing power". I'd put it more like 20% more raw processing power, but in reality it's memory starved so that's what is holding it back. Completely different value proposition.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Announces Removal Of Super Famicom Title

mikejs78

My suspicion of what happened here is that the licensing agreement came up, and there was a dispute over the price, and Nintendo looked at the usage of super soccer and saw that it was probably close to non-existent and therefore not worth the price of licensing. It's going to happen, I'm not going to get worked up over a single game that I never play, but if this starts becoming a trend then I'll get concerned. But it's not trend yet, so really why get up in arms?

As far as virtual console, yes you could "own" the games, but those e shops are gone. If you have a Wii or Wii U and it breaks today, you have no way of getting those games back. So at the moment every single virtual console game is delisted. It's slightly more permanent than nso, but not really. Physical is the only surefire way of keeping something somewhat permanently, and that is dying a slow death in the industry unfortunately.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (New Year Edition)

mikejs78

Being off from work, the kids being off from school, and family in from out of town has meant lots of Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Party Jamboree (which arrived on Christmas).

Aside from that I've been staying up after everyone else is in bed and playing Echoes of Wisdom (another Christmas arrival) along with some TotK. Aside from Switch, I also started Stray (gorgeous game btw) on PC, after finishing up Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order right before Christmas. Trying to get as much gaming in as possible before returning to work on the 2nd.

My family plays a lot of multiplayer coop games together - primarily myself, wife, and older son. My younger son plays some games with us but not othets. We finished what we could reasonably play of Mario Wonder all together - all the main game levels and all wonderseeds. We haven't done the special levels yet and we are taking a break.

Lately we have been playing Moving Out 2, which has been a lot of fun. There are some frustrating aspects of it, but it's the type of multiplayer my family enjoys where we can do a quick level or two in the evening.

It's only in the past year that I've been able to work solo video games back into my life, so I'm doing g a lot of catching up. Last year I finished BotW, and now I'm onto TotK. I finished the Wind temple and am on my way to Kakariko village. I think once I get there (which should be tonight) I'm going to take a little break. I want to savor this game, not rush it.

Once I hit the break I'm going to blitz through Super Mario Odyssey, another game I haven't ever completed. I restarted it about a month ago and have been playing it in small bites between exploring Hyrule.

I'm also planning on starting my own playthrough of Super Mario Wonder to attempt to 100% it, which is not something the rest of my family is interested in.

Re: GTA 6 On 'Switch 2' Would Be "Very Tricky To Pull Off", Says Digital Foundry

mikejs78

Something doesn't add up here - if the rumored Switch 2 specs are legit, the Switch 2 will support an Nvidia Ampre GPU. Now, the devil is in the details (memory, clock speed, etc.) but Nvidia's RT performance is generally a lot better than AMD's, and coupled with DLSS , the Switch 2 should perform very well with RT support.

Frankly I don't care about GTA on the Switch 2 - but the reasoning strikes me as suspect.
