Out of my 66 downloaded games, 11 are WiiWare ... now, that sounds like a lot, but ...
6 are the BIT.TRIP series. Once I bought one and loved it, I was gonna buy the whole series. So I wasn't exactly going out on a limb here.
1 is Castlevania: Rebirth. I'm a Castlevania junkie, so, again, not a stretch.
2 are the Mega Man games. Also a big Mega Man fan, so yet again, not a bold purchase.
That leaves 2: Fluidity and ...And Yet It Moves.
So, if you count the first time I took a chance on the BIT.TRIP series, that makes 3 of 11 WiiWare games I took a chance on. The rest had some kind of history to fall back on to justify the purchase.
And therein lies my point; precious few demos (and demos only being released, what, two or three years into the service's lifespan?), little to no pre-release promotion, prices all over the map ... the service was promoted as the new golden boy, but its been the red-headed step-child. The VC may have been mishandled, but at least it hasn't been thrown to the wolves like WiiWare has.
In a weird way, in one generation, Nintendo has crammed all the experience they went through with both the SNES and the N64; they blew up big, put a stop to rivals which should've been harder to take down (the SNES), then got a ridiculous ego that made them believe their every decision was untouchable, only to watch the consumer run away in droves (N64). If history repeats itself again, that means Wii U=the Gamecube era all over again.
The Land Before Time? We're stretching it here. Just cause it spawned 11,000 sequels does not it a classic make. Passable, but not in the same class as NIMH.
All Dogs Go To Heaven? Okay, now we're off the mark completely. Just pandering crapola.
ANASTASIA?!? Seriously? What's next, The Emperor's New Groove is a Disney masterpiece?
Less gimmicky peripherals, more focus on the core necessities, Nintendo! How many Motion Plus games you got? Or Wii Zapper? No, never mind that, we need to follow Sega's mid-90's gameplan!
Actions speak louder than words, Iwata. And while I enjoy many games on my Wii, the failure to court third parties for strong support, letting the system be bogged down with tons of shovelware, virtually abandoning VC and WiiWare without advertisement or promotion of any kind, and a plethora of gimmicks (balance board, Motion Plus) that were under-supported all contribute to where I am now: not interested in Project Cafe. You want my fanship back, put on your big boy pants and be a VIDEO GAME COMPANY again.
Never thought I'd say this, but I've now seen a Nintendo game that looks generic. Emo-anime lead character ... hack and slash and quick-time events ... big monsters, big weapons ... a sort of future/past setting ... yawn. Been there, done that.
@Zaphod: You and me both. And don't forget Joust, Moon Patrol, Battlezone, Zaxxon, Mario Brothers (the original, not Super), Pole Position, Galaga and Galaxian. True arcade classics.
It's more than the size limit (although that is a huge roadblock). Nintendo has created a perfect trap for themselves with the Wii. The system has been pushed for so long now as a "casual" platform and a "party game system" that services like VC and WiiWare, which are more geared for true gamers, have been overlooked. Likewise, physical media games have suffered because the system is aimed at audiences that aren't looking for Little King's Story or Conduit or Madworld; they want Rock Band and Wii Party. The market for 3rd party developers is almost non-existent at this point on the Wii; nobody buys their games enough to justify further development, and Nintendo has no desire to change their marketing strategy. This is a grave Nintendo has dug, and with their focus now on the 3DS, the grave's only getting deeper.
When the best game for Wii you've done is Boom Blox Bash Party, and you've completely ignored the Virtual Console service, you don't have much of a leg to stand on, EA.
Any of those sites have, usually in the forums or comments sections, whole senior theses dedicated to why Other M sucks.
I've enjoyed the cutscenes. I actually like that the game has a story, and not just a flimsy one you have to discern through clues and hints. Are the cutscenes a bit overkill? On occasion ... and the dialogue is rather ponderous (it reminds me of the dialogue in the Legacy Of Kain games), but they aren't approaching Metal Gear Solid/Final Fantasy levels of overkill.
But again, this is one of the main complaints I've read: nobody likes that the game HAS a story. They just want more exploration, more Chozo, more same ol' Metroid. They can't accept something new, something different. I think it speaks to the hypocrisy of Nintendo's core fanbase: they cry for mature games, they cry for the same kind of innovation in software that Nintendo has shown in hardware. And look what happens: Little King's Story ... Red Steel 2 ... No More Heroes (both of them) ... Madworld ... and now, Metroid: Other M. All of these delivered what the fanbase demanded -- mature content, intelligent storylines, innovative gameplay -- and that fanbase stayed away in droves, or rejected them because they didn't fit the mold of the safe comfortable titles they've played for years now. If this derails Metroid evolving as a franchise and makes them run back to Retro, I'll be angry ... and I blame the so-called hardcore Nintendo fans for being closed-minded hypocrites. [end soapbox]
Go to another site and look in the comments. IGN, Kotaku, 411mania's Games section. The knee-jerk "it's not like Prime, it sucks!' comments number in the HUNDREDS. Other M's problem is that Nintendo did what they did with Zelda II and Mario Sunshine: they took a chance. They deviated from the norm. They innovated. And they paid the price for it.
Typical Nintendo fanboy: OH NOES! TEH GAME IZ DIFFRENT FROM METROID PRIME! I DONT LIKEZ IT! I WANTZ TEH SAME GAME FOREVERZ!!! FLAME IT ON TEH WEBZZZ!!!1!1!11
I was all set to buy this in two weeks. Knowing that, to get it on WiiWare they'll have to decimate it to fit, yes, put it on disc. Those who intended on buying it on WiiWare will buy it on disc. And it may pick up a few extra buyers that way.
I point to the first Final Fantasy -- published by Nintendo, developed by Square. Wouldn't be the first time a title's been released on VC with more than one hand in the honey pot.
Road Rash II and Mutant League Football/Hockey won't happen because those are EA, and EA won't sign off on VC. And you're never getting Earthbound ... no point in holding your breath there.
@Starboy
SquareSoft already has games on the VC, so how would the Breath Of Fire game be a problem?
I LOATHED this game. Vague clues, no discernible map, it suffers from the "you can't do a simple action until we tell you how" syndrome (running, for instance, isn't available until the game says "press B to run"), and it has huge holes in logic: the main character is a mountain climber, but he can't jump over a two foot wall in the first city?!? Couple all this with bland, monotone graphics, and you have one of the worst games on the Wii.
Yes, because releasing an "upgrade" of the current system mere months before your next-gen system is SUCH a great idea. It won't get buried at all when people wait for the real new product which isn't that far down the line. See 32X, Sega.
I don't know what bugs me more: the fact that we've now gone, what, two or three weeks without a VC release ... or that next week, the drought will be ended with Aero The [bleep]ing Acrobat.
I do that with every post-play survey. Doesn't seem to making a difference so far. One update in four weeks is PATHETIC. There should be somewhere we can complain to besides in surveys.
Don't play online multiplayer games, absolutely loathe MMORPG's ... the only thing that matters to me as far as the Wii's online connectivity is the Wii Store. So Nintendo can do whatever they want as far as I care.
I'm sure there are some completionists and neurotic perfectionists who'd buy them. For that alone, sure, why not release 'em and make a few bucks? Me? Not interested.
Worst game I've played on the Wii, and front-runner for worst game of my 32-year life. I can see why it sank Deep Silver Vienna. If only the game could be sank ... preferably to the bottom of the ocean.

I rented the original for five straight days, to the annoyance of my parents. I'd love to play it again.

How about some Sega titles NOT related to Monster World or Wonder Boy? Fatal Labrynith ... ESWAT ... Mystic Defender ...

Awesome, it'll be as powerful as a 5 year old machine! That's cutting edge ... of children's safety scissors.

What a stellar list of Wii releases. Guess I'll be playing even more of my new PS3.

Oh, snap. KOTM2 and Mega Man X (which I never got to play, being a Genesis kid) ... maybe I'll be needing some Wii points soon after all!
Re: Square Enix Brings More SNES Goodies to Virtual Console
Nice to see some big third party support. Too bad I'm not interested in these games. Call me when Dragon Warrior is released, SquEnix.

For all the good it will do, signed, #7733.
Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword is Half Finished, says Miyamoto
Hey, as long as it's good, I'm fine with the wait. What I'm not fine with is that Nintendo has NOTHING slated for between now and then.
And before someone says "3DS", I'm talking WII GAMES. Another new handheld is not the way to supplant a system's library that already seems anemic.

Re: North America Gets In On WiiWare Demo Action Next Week
Already got AYIM and FATE, but I'm interested in ThruSpace. This'll come in handy, since VC is all but deceased.
