Not surprising. I got the last copy at my Target, and they rarely sell out. They still have limited edition Mario All Stars, and I don't think they even ran out between printings!
I'm ok with this. Most free to play games are full of ads OR rely on very simple mechanics where you basically just choose between grinding (in some cases grinding is just spamming your friends with ads) or paying to win. Not everybody needs to utilize every business model, and I don't mind paying for a full great game instead of free playing a game watered down by the advertising needed to make the microtransaction model worth it.
That being said, cut us a break with some digital sales now and then, and I won't complain.
The only real big name game that released for 3DS in the past month was DoA. Low sales aren't really surprising, if Street Fighter didn't convince you to pick up the system, DoA probably won't either. You can bet there will be a rush once OoT drops.
Personally, after the Vita announcement, I'm holding off, because I think the 3DS may get a price drop around the holidays to compete. The most exciting things for me right now on the system are Mario Land and Links Awakening on the VC and OoT (which I'll probably buy on launch day without the system just to get the free CN soundtrack). The Wii's probably going to sell as long as the PS2 did.
This is a really great game, but it doesn't look like much has been added to what you get on the VC release so far (It even has local mulitplayer, though I guess not this "new" mode). Unless they're adding new levels or something, I think I'll just stick with the VC game.
Just tweak the physics a bit (you can even keep the homing attack, though it's not necessary in 2D space like it is in 3D), and I'll be super happy. I did enjoy Sonic 4 for what it was though. It was a nice little blast of nostalgia. The idea that they can recreate the epicness of Sonic 2 or Sonic 3/Knuckles now is silly, and fans need to stop expecting that will happen. It's because YOUR expectations have raised. 2D platformers aren't the most technically impressive games on the block anymore. So just sit back and enjoy the ride.
The tech demos shown at the E3 presentation definitely sparked some ideas of new and different things this controller can do. I think the DS has also shown how 2 screens can be super handy.
I do worry about 3rd parties porting games from ps360 a year late using only the classic controller, wondering why they don't get good sales (because they were released a year earlier on the ps360, idiots - and you didn't add anything new or worthwhile to it), and then jumping ship when the ps4/720 drops and only making shovelware for the WiiU.
If Ninty is to win over the ps360 crowd it will have to run ports better and the controller will have to offer more. The console is more powerful, but will 3rd parties take advantage of that or will the new learning curve lead to sloppy efforts that still look the best on the 360? That will be the determining factor for Nintendo, for those who Nintendo's first party games aren't enough for.
A couple of questions maybe the reviewer can answer:
1) Are the dungeons in Master Quest the same as the GCN Master Quest? I know the overworld is mirrored, which I don't think was true on the Gamecube. Any other changes from the GCN version?
2) Was anything added (npcs, sidequests, etc.) or changed in the original, or is it kept unchanged)?
It could also just mean that they haven't had the dev kits for long enough to get it to run yet. I'm sure there's plenty of tweaking needed to get it to run perfectly whenever they move to a different platform.
The article really doesn't mean much. There are also ways to use the processing power in ways other than pure graphical improvement. I'm thinking we may see 1080p or 60 fps but rarely both.
That being said, I can't tell the difference between 60 and 30 fps. I can barely see the difference between 1080p and 720p, except on the largest and highest quality sets. The idea of a Mario Galaxy or Skyward Sword or Metroid Prime type game but larger, with smarter AI, true co-op in a 3D title (maybe even online - though to be honest, that's not super important to me either, I just think Ninty needs to get with the times) is what excites me about this system.
That's not too surprising. Nintendo doesn't usually show stuff until it's pretty close to what it will be on release. Remember, the hardware needs to be done for a while before launch, so that software can be developed and ready.
The problem will be when the PS4 and Xbox 720 release about a year later and blow the WiiU away. If they are sold at a competitive price point, the WiiU has a problem. I agree that the console should not be more than $300 if they want to be competitive.
That's a shame. You need something, anything, to grab on to and look forward to on Mondays. Shop update was perfect! Now all we have is Monday Night Football, and it's not even football season yet!
I'm with stuffy, if they're going to use cash (and charge tax, apparently), give us a shopping cart and let us pay the exact price. 39 cents left over is more useless than 100 points. They're not charging 99 cents for anything, so just suck it up and pay the credit card fees like apple, Sony, etc. do.
If they are charging tax, I feel bad for those relying on prepaid cards. If you buy those in store you're taxed twice!
@10 If you sold your DSi on Ebay or something, you would have made some extra money by having games included. Now someone else owns those games, but Nintendo only got paid once. Giving out a second copy to you would be the same as giving a second copy of the game to any random person who bought a used DSi.
It's the same thing with used retail games. Once you sell a retail game, you can't just show your receipt from gamestop for your original purchase and get a second copy. Why would that be true with digital titles? They're not making any extra money by having you buy the games twice, because now the person who bought your system won't buy a copy of the included games for themselves.
Given that the control has buttons, multitouch capabilities probably wouldn't be worth the extra price. The screen is large enough that you could get away with using your thumbs instead of the stylus unless you're drawing. That will make it pretty quick and easy to use in game. It's not like the DS that uses the stylus for fps games. The Wiimote or dual analog will be better for those games.
I 3rd the internet four player hopes. We could start NLife 4 swords clubs (because I cannot find 3 others to play with me). Internet+voice chat on a free game seems to be too much to ask for though.
Cross play is probably the most exciting feature I've seen with the WiiU. I would be very excited if you saw the kind of connect-ability PS3 and Vita will have.
It's quite possible they are using blu-ray, they just aren't going to pay for the codecs to play movies - like the Wii uses DVDs. It'd be a shame if my GCN games didn't play on it, but I'd get over it pretty quickly with them added to the VC and a 3DS player for OoT+MQ to replace that disc.
Announce a 3DS player on the WiiU and I'll be sold. I definitely think there's potential. Shame it didn't get the incredible, absolutely incredible moniker yet, though.
At first I was worried about the cost of many controllers.
Then I was worried about the fact that it actually seems like it can only handle 1 controller (streaming HD video with no lag onto one device is a feat, after all), and it would ruin the opportunities for split screen.
Then I heard SSB was being developed for both Cafe and Wii. 3DS/DS player? Sweetest news ever! Add some videos showing unique multiplayer options (2-4 vs. 1 type things) and the fact that we won't have to worry about buying extras if there's only one makes me a happy camper!
So glad you're doing liveblog again. I just got called into work (and by the time I get settled the conference will be mostly over. I wonder if this works on teh iphone.
Figured the browser and flipnote wouldn't come over, since they were free and new versions have been confirmed for the 3DS.

The price is not too bad. That's nice that less popular titles will get a discount to help compete with the big guns like Mario. Hopefully more flexibility on sales will come too for companies that want to pursue that. I think when we see GBC games hit the shop, they'll be $4.99. GBA $7.99 or so.
I'd rather have a couple extra $$ in points left over though, then a $.99 pricing model where you have to buy "money" in increments of $5.00. I know I'll spend an extra $ or two eventually, and I'll be even. You'd have to buy 100 titles to completely empty your account with this system. Totally annoying.
Hope they're not just porting SS to the Cafe. A new Zelda on 3DS would be cool, I suppose. I wouldn't be too bummed if this wasn't true. We're getting tons of Zelda.
It doesn't sound like it's going to be THAT different than the console versions necessarily. Shoot, if the special stages are good, it'll probably be better! I loved the special stages back in the day.

The smart move? Continue to make games of many genres that appeal to many different types of people. Give some parity to how you market these games to attract a large base while you have some market advantage. However, the newest COD being on your machine isn't going to make people who already have a PS360 buy a Cafe. There needs to be something new (like motion control was) to make the machine appeal to multi-console owners.
I think physical media is on its way out, but we're not there yet. Re: Talking Point: Should Nintendo Have Made the 3DS Download-only?
I think physical media is on its way out, but we're not there yet. Broadband is not universal, and you'd need memory in the hundreds of gigabytes (if not a tb) to make having a large downladable game library (with retail sized titles). Steam has shown download only is feasible, but it would be too cost prohibitive for portables. Re: TT Games: "Disney Universe Rips Us Off"
