@larryisaman fully agree. I grew up in the 8- and 16 bit eras, then stepped away from gaming until 2017 when Botw compelled me to get a Switch. When the N64 games came out for NSO I was really excited to play OoT for the first time. But having skipped over the N64 era, I donāt have any fondness/nostalgia for the early 3D polygon aesthetics, and Iām finding it hard to get past thatā¦I havenāt given up on OoT, but it hasnāt yet grabbed me like I thought it wouldā¦Iāll give it some more time.
@Kiyata apologies- didnāt mean to imply anything! I donāt doubt you, and if you havenāt experienced lag issues with the collection then thatās great. At the same time Iām not the only one mentioning the lag issue with the classics collectionā thereās like 4-5 other examples in these comments as well. I think we can both be right š
Ps I checked my software/hardware - both are the latest versions.
@Kiyata Interestongā¦I had just chalked it up to person-to-person variabilityā¦my wife doesnāt notice the lag (or any lag for that matter, like when we hook up our NES to a new TVā¦barf) and it makes me feel kinda crazy. We have an OG switch and an OLED, and my experience is the same on both. Some others have the same complaint about the Genesis classics collection, so I do think it is a thing, for those that are irked by lag. Iām jealousā¦would love to be able to enjoy that collection. š¤·āāļø
@Kiyata it does look strange to have so much overlap between the NSO genesis offerings and the Genesis classics collection. On paper, the latter is an amazing collection of gamesābut for folks sensitive to input lag (like me) the emulation is a huge disappointment. I havenāt clocked it but it feels like 0.5 seconds between pressing a button and Sonic jumping on screen. Whereas in the NSO version, the lag feels negligible. I have both, and I HATE the genesis classics version!! Wish Iād never bought it š”
@SalvorHardin I didnāt know that about the emulatorā¦the lag is truly atrocious in the Genesis/MD Classics Collection. I was so disappointed after buying it. Sonic 2 in that collection is the definition of āunplayable.ā IMO itās night and day compared to the NSO version.
I dig the look of this. Something to keep an eye on.
@Royalblues havenāt yet formed an opinion on flightless birds. Currently leaning slightly in the āproā camp but it could still go either way. Like yeah, theyāre cool from an evolution-type standpoint but I also get why some people think theyāre smug and super into themselves.
@OwenGamer22 In the genesis collection, IMO the lag is tolerable for like the RPGs, but really annoying for games like Sonic, which for me was just not enjoyable.
Great article. I never played THUG but for me it was THPS 1 and 2, like the commenters above. I downloaded almost all those tracks onto my Napster machine.
@erikharrison if the auto save actually causes the game to stutter like that, it would be game-killingā¦Hopefully that pause is just part of this video production to highlight the auto save featureā¦
@Munchlax I fall into this category (grew up playing Mario on NES) and yes, using a stick to play 2D platformers (whether they are old or current games) just feels alien to me. It could just be nostalgia but the dpad just feels more responsive to me.
Hence for Mario, I would prefer the original hardware but donāt have an old CRT tv, which IMO is needed to avoid the dreaded lag issue of older consoles w/ newer TVs. So next best thing for me is the NSO service, using a controller with a passable dpad which for me is the 8bitdo SF30 pro.
@Pikman I hear you. I play games [I think] to escape real-world anxieties. Glad that some people enjoy games like this, but personally it sounds like it would give me a panic attack š¤£
@kurtasbestos what did you think of the Phantasy Star games? I have only ever played 3, back when it came out in the 90s. I played the s*** out of it back then, trying to play through every lineage, so it has a big nostalgia factor for me...but objectively Iāve heard itās the weakest in the series. Just curious to hear someoneās take who has recently played all 3...Iāve been meaning to play 2 and 4 on the SEGA classics collection.
Oh man, Shining Force 2 was great. Sunk many hours into the original!
@PickledKong64 True, influenza does kill lots of people each year,. However, based on the epidemiological data available thus far, Covid cases would completely inundate our healthcare infrastructure, in the absence of preventive measures (closings, social distancing, etc). The relatively low # of confirmed cases here in US is just a reflection of the lack of testing thus far.
@Zeldafan79 agreed...Just waiting for the big names (AC, Trials of Mana, Xenoblade). I did recently jump into Ys VIII, as it was 50% off (digital) and I've been meaning to play that for a while.
