I never had the NES, my first home console was the Gamecube. That's why I first played the original Zelda adventure on that platform through the collectors edition that came with Wind Waker in Europe. Also I wanted to mention that my first contact with the series was with Link's Awakening on the original Game Boy. Still one of my favourites alongside with Majora's Mask!
