I am not really interested in mobile games (with rare exceptions that don't hold for long either), I am also not really interested in MOBAs and I dislike Tencent very much. So yeah...
I definitly believe Nintendo in this case. Apart from Nintendo knowing their costs better then anyone, a 10$ difference in material simply sounds too low. That OLED screen should be more expensive then this alone. A price difference of 50$ doesn't seem wrong.
Doesn't change the fact, that both models are overpriced at this point, though.
@scalexander99 I had been looking into mods myself in the past, as they have the potential of solving all my issues, actually. They couldn't really do it back then, though that was years ago.
My main problem being, that nothing you do is of any consequence, by the way. In fact I played quite a lot at first, because this isn't something you can quickly notice. It somehow made me feel like I wasted my time is what it comes down to.
@BloodNinja I hope you don't mean me with "the fanboys will come rushing in to defend their dear Nintendo". When I think I have been pretty clear about liking the Steam Deck myself, on other occasions. I would buy it, if I cared about handheld gaming at all. I still partly disagree with what he is saying though.
There should be middleground between the extremes.
@scalexander99 I don't? I bought it for pc when it was new, didn't like it and stopped playing. Doesn't change the fact that I could play it in 4k right now.
@Restryder
1. These 240$ price point is news to me. Does this include shipping, taxing and such? Whatever I don't know enough to argue here.
2. No I wouldn't, I don't even like Skyrim . Besides, I can already play Skyrim in 4k on my pc...
For me it is just very simple: If a game is worth it's price for me, then I will buy it. Otherwise I don't. Skyward Sword could be costing 200$ and I would just not buy it. I don't need to get angry about stuff like that. If there is a game I value higher comes, I might pay these 60$. There simply is no issue here.
3. Here you were talking specifically about dedicated servers in Smash, not Nintendo online services in general.
4. What are you even talking about? Sony just recently tried to shut down a company that tried to sell custom side panels for the PS5. It happens more often with Nintendo, because this kind of stuff happens more often to Nintendo, mainly because of the many fangames.
If you think I am a "Corporate lacky" for noticing this, you are quite simply wrong.
5. Straw man argument. I never said I have no problem if Nintendo does it. I only implied, that I think Sony and Microsoft are worse. In fact I am annoyed that I have to pay for this at all, it should be free on all platforms.
I think I have a way better argument for calling you a troll after this point, than you ever had for calling me "corporate lacky".
7. That would be true, if you had made different arguments. But Skyward Sword being too expensive isn't something you can only say after buying the game. Same for the charity thing...
1. Half agreed, 350$ is too much. But "less then 180$ to make" still seems like a pretty low estimate. It is still mobile tech.
2. Agreed, but I don't see the problem. I won't buy Skyward Sword for that reason and with that it is case closed for me. No need to be angry about that.
3. If dedicated servers are so important to you, fair enough? I don't care and considering how average consumers tend to think, they probably don't care either, even if they should.
4. Any company needs to protect their rights. If you let someone make custom joy con for charity purposes this one time, you will have a hard time in court if this happens again outside of charity. Aside from that, a cease and desist isn't send out by the higher ups and those that do that have a simple job to do it. Who exactly should make the decision to spare them, when the higher ups aren't even really involved in the process? All in all, a pretty normal result, even if it is sad.
5. I especially have a bias against companies that charge a crap ton of money for their online services. Nintendo is at least cheaper... And no, voice chat and such do not justify the price difference at all to me. No one cares about what I think here either and most people would apparently love to pay more just to get some features. It's things like that, why I play mainly on PC...
6. Blind fans are everywhere, especially in gaming. Get over it.
7. Your criticism isn't more justified if you paid more money. If anything, you take part in enabling them to do what they do.
@SwitchForce
What do you mean "grabbing on"? I even voted "neither" myself.
Can I not just find a result interesting?
Of course this isn't scientific, but that is kind of my point, on a site like this, I would usually expect the result to be screwed in the other direction.
Maybe this doesn't mean anything, but for now, it is still an interesting result.
Seeing the results of the poll up to this point is pretty interesting. This is a Nintendo specific news site, most people here like Nintendo. At this point, there are more people interested in the Steam Deck than the Switch OLED.
Who knows, maybe Steam Deck has the potential of becoming a big success?
@Wexter
"What does a Steam Deck offer to Average Joe that they care about the Switch cannot already do for cheaper?"
You mean asside from it having vastly better performance in all games and a much bigger library of games, which are also much cheaper?
Maybe better online functionality for free?
To be honest, the only arguments pro Switch here is the price at first and its first party games.
If you want to play anything but Nintendo first party stuff, then Steamdeck simply seems superior.
@Wexter These 120 million only include the players that have used Steam in a month. This does not include many Fortnite kiddies, as that is not on Steam. It also does not include hardcore Minecraft or League of Legends players etc. And more people who don't use Steam for other reasons.
If you include everything, there are easily many more PC gamers out there than console gamers total.
What exactly ist the "average consumer" in that context? Just as people bought a Switch, they could buy a Steamdeck. Doesn't need to be someone who ist a PC gamer at all.
There are more than enough potential customers for this thing. Will thus be a success? I don't know, but the amount of people who could buy this ist very high.
@RadioHedgeFund I don't see it. Again, almost the entire third party lineup of the Switch is already on Steam. Why would any of these games not work as well?
Then there are still tons of games where I can't see the issue. Yakuza, Hitman, CoD, Assassin's Creed... I honestly have a much harder time thinking of games that wouldn't work well on handheld. Existing strategy games mainly.
I mentioned that before, but the price ist kind of a trap. The smallest model only hast 64gb of storage, which you probably would want to upgrade immediately, if you don't want to only play indie games. Might as well buy a more expensive version, really.
@SalvorHardin @RadioHedgeFund
You have got to be kidding me.
Do you have any idea how many games there are on Steam? There are tons over tons of games that would work without the slightest problem for a mobile environment. Including basically the entire Switch third party library.
Almost everything supports controllers as well.
For the few games that actualy need a mouse, thats what the touch pads are for.
@Ludovsky That is exactly what I mean. The Switch can live with its low amount of storage more easily.
For the smalles Steamdeck, you probably need more storage. However you choose to solve this issue, the price difference between Switch and Steamdeck is a bit bigger than it first seems.
@flightsaber Sure, I just wanted to say that this machine can easily be more expensive than it seems, because you probably don't want the cheapest model or at least want a big sd card on top.
You need to be careful with the cost argument though. The small variant, with 64gb is too small imo. Switch games tend to be small, because they have to be.
PC games, on the other hand can be quite large. In fact, some games won't fit into that storage at all.
@Cyberbotv2 I don't see a reason why this wouldn't support mods. At the very least the mods from Steams own "Steam Workshop", but probably all the others as well, since this thing seems to behave like a normal pc anyway, just with Steam OS pre installed.
Offline play is not a problem on Steam in general. If a game requires online, then that is on the game, not on Steam.
If I had more interest in handheld gaming, I would be all over this.
The price/hardware comparison with the Switch isn't even that relevant, imo. The Switch is weaker but also cheaper.
Switch should get cheaper then it already is, but it is what it is.
The bigger point is, that this gives you access to your entire Steam library.
If you have no pc: Tons of games that could potentially interest you. And multiplats are generally cheapest on Steam as well.
If you already have Steam on your pc: No brainer.
And stop with the "2 generations old hardware" argument.
First of all the current gen is irrelevant, since a PS4/Xone version (downgraded) is all that we are talking about.
Secondly, this would put the Switch on the same level as a PS3. A comparison that already dies if we just simply compare the RAM these systems have. (4GB Switch vs. 512MB PS3)
I can't believe some still defend this by saying "the Switch is not powerful enough" when there are several more drmanding games already on the system. I would almost go as far as to say that almost all games that are at least AA, running on the Switch, are more demanding than FIFA is. Also, no one expects a version that is on par with the other consoles versions. We rightfully expect more then what we are getting here though.
So since this seems to be easy to miss: From what we can read in this News, Nintendo didn't do anything at all. It was just the police by themselves. The fact that it happened to be a Nintendo game that is involved, is basically just a coincidence. Could have been any other game from any other company, it would have changed nothing.
I have an over 2 year old OLED TV, I have been gaming a lot on it and generally did not care if it was displaying static images.
For example, I had long youtube videos running on it which are partly static.
No issues whatsoever.
Modern OLED TVs usually do not have this problem anymore, unless under very extreme conditions (gaming can be pretty extreme, mind you).
Though phones are probably the most extreme case possible, since the same icons are being displayed at the same places all the time, this does not even happen as much on a gaming system.
If Switch OLED has the same features for protection as a TV (which is more then was mentioned here in the Nintendo statement), then I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe if you are planning to play the same game for thousands of hours.
@Brad_Hogan About the dock: Was it confirmed, that it is compatible with the regular Switch? It seemed to me like the OLED model is formed a bit differently, so I wasn't 100% sure.
@Brad_Hogan That OLED screen can make a huge difference for all games, even if energy consumption isn't one of them. If I care enough for handheld gaming, I would sure buy the OLED model. However, I would probably not buy it, if I already have the normal Switch or if I only care about TV mode.
Personally I have a Switch and play almost entirely in TV mode, so I definitly won't be buying this.
The price is, compared to the regualr model, imo still fine. Both models are equally very expensive at this point though, there should have been a price drop for the regular model already, meaning an equally less expensive OLED model as well. This is a problem of the Switch overall though, not the OLED model specifically.
OLED do need less power, especially if the the game you are displaying is pretty dark. Not so much if the game is very bright. Considering the screen is also bigger and reportedly brighter overall (?) I am not sure there will be any benefit for battery life. Maybe for said darker games.
I am not sure why it is noted so often, that this isn't worth the upgrade for people playing only docked. I mean, duh? I don't think Nintendo expects those players to upgrade, if they even expect any sizeble amount of upgraders.
What I don't understand about this model is missing HDR support? (At the very least it wasn't mentioned.) HDR basically costs nothing and now the handheld screen, being an OLED, would probably be able to display it too. Though, I guess Handheld HDR could be a bit dangerous for the energy consumption. I am not sure how much sense it makes to optimize handheld HDR in that area.
@YANDMAN That would mean it is the Nintendo Network thing that I mentioned? I think that is a strange way of doing it, but I guess consoles want to somehow restrict what you can do online.
@Taffy Eh, not really comparable. Owning a mobile phone doesn't solve the problem that existed in that context, because I don't want to play on it. If games on phones didn't have any huge disatvantages to console or pc games, then Blizzards question would have been perfectly valid (although not well formulated to prevent a possible outrage).
On the other side, Smart TV are basically the standard for most TVs that aren't super cheap. Using Netflix over Smart TV also should be the better option in 99% of cases compared to using the Switch.
Really the only reason why Netflix on Switch makes sense, is because not everyone has a Smart TV yet, for one reason or another. Unless you have another of the million options available. The amount of people who don't have a phone is completely negligible at this point, if that is the reason to not release a game for phones, then you can't release it anywhere.
So the apps just don't work anymore? I kind of wonder why that is the case then, i mean, the apps should just be clients that connect to the same server. So a Switch app, a Android app or heck the internet browser on your pc should all connect to the same library. Even if an app isn't supported anymore, I would have thought it still works for now...
I guess maybe they have to go through the Nintendo Network which costs something, or something in that direction? Or do they prevent access from these apps solely because they expect people to be angry if something doesn't work, unless they just officially shut it down?
Tbh. I am less annoyed about scalpers, than about the people buying from scalpers. At the end of day, they are the reason why scalpers exist.
@GrailUK @Friendly I am not sure there is a way to prevent that kind of thing from happening by regulations either. One of the problems being that they would have to have such regulations world wide, otherwise scalpers could sell through other countries.
@Ralek85 "True, but a) this is no law of nature, just the way the game was designed and b) you said it yourself: you are constantly linking attacks in this game, esp. once you are a couple of hours in. If you are doing just "normal" one-off attacks, you are playing wrong, and the game actually tells you this in abundance." So you basically do not want the SMT combat system at all, but a heavily changed version? Just so they can make it look more flashy? I like the combat how it is.
Honestly, considering all you are writing, I think what you want is just a completely different game at this point.
@Ralek85 The problem is, that you think TMS did it better, which I completely disagree with. To me TMS just did it differently, more fitting to a flashy game.
Apart from that, it makes no sense to give out options here either, because there is no logical reason to make the camera move more, when the characters do not move as much. Again, in TMS, the characters jump around like crazy and the camera follows that. How is the camera supposed to move, when the characters do not do this? This is a completely different situation. Basically, the camera isn't much different, the moves are, at most.
When you fire just some normal skill or a physical attack in TMS, without chain reactions that don't exist in SMT, it doesn't look much different than it does in the SMT5 trailer.
@Ralek85 Camera in TMS was quite static as well, unless the characters used some special attack, which the game just had a metric ton of. The game felt so dynamic mostly because of those. Basically, it was so dynamic because with almost every attack, you caused some chain reaction that caused your party to jump around like mad with the camera following all the action. SMT doesn't work like that and I don't want it to work like that. When the protagonist of SMT5 unleashed a big attack, like in 2:47 the camera also wasn't as static anymore.
The stylish menu of P5 wouldn't fit an SMT game at all, imo.
For SMT, personally I think simple is best, honestly. Intense action is the last thing I want to see from that series, I don't need that in every game.
@Pokester99 Possibly a combination of two things: 1. Less endgame grind, if you count that. 2. Monsters generally die quicker, making you burn through quests faster. At least that is what it feels like... Would also make sense since long quests are not ideal wegen playing portable. Well you also don't have to search for monsters as much in Rise.
@Zeldafan79 The Switch is now 4 years old. A normal console cycle is about 7 years.
A Switch Pro (we are calling it that, because of the lack of a better word) that is released end of this year or beginning of the next could still have a lifetime of about 2 years (could be more, could be less), that is as much time as there was between DSi and 3DS for example. Considering how successful the Switch is, there also isn't much of a reason to cut the generation short.
I don't know if there will be a Switch Pro, but it wouldn't be too late for that yet.
@GamingFan4Lyf
Not entirely sure why you list RTX there of all things.
No matter how you look at it, RTX is still very demanding on the hardware and, on a weaker system, rarely worth the cost (some argue it isn't even worth it on a high end system...).
As far as I remember, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series already support VRS as well, even without Nvidia. Though I am not 100% sure...
Anyway, VRS is not specifically an Nvidia feature, Nvidia was just the first to support it.
Your conclusion mostly rests on just DLSS. That alone could be a big thing for a next gen Nintendo console though, so I still agree with that conclusion.
@Ventilator That is not true, as long as you have stored the data somewhere, the servers being gone is completely irrelevant for digital games. The fact that you at least CAN store games is already a massive plus compared to cloud gaming in my mind.
Not to mention, in case a game isn't available anywhere official anymore, you can bet you will find the game on the internet still. That is next to impossible if a game was only available via cloud gaming (though of course that is irrelevant as long as the game is available outside of the cloud somewhere. Depends on whether you trust that always being the case for future games.)

@Brad_Hogan
Not sure about the Wii.
Did that ever have a price drop before the Wii U dropped?
Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands-On" Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch OLED
@Brad_Hogan
About the dock: Was it confirmed, that it is compatible with the regular Switch? It seemed to me like the OLED model is formed a bit differently, so I wasn't 100% sure.
Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands-On" Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch OLED
@Brad_Hogan
That OLED screen can make a huge difference for all games, even if energy consumption isn't one of them.
Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands-On" Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch OLED
@Brad_Hogan @Chamver
OLED do need less power, especially if the the game you are displaying is pretty dark. Not so much if the game is very bright.
Considering the screen is also bigger and reportedly brighter overall (?) I am not sure there will be any benefit for battery life.
Maybe for said darker games.
Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands-On" Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch OLED
I am not sure why it is noted so often, that this isn't worth the upgrade for people playing only docked. I mean, duh?
I don't think Nintendo expects those players to upgrade, if they even expect any sizeble amount of upgraders.
What I don't understand about this model is missing HDR support? (At the very least it wasn't mentioned.)
HDR basically costs nothing and now the handheld screen, being an OLED, would probably be able to display it too.
Though, I guess Handheld HDR could be a bit dangerous for the
energy consumption. I am not sure how much sense it makes to optimize handheld HDR in that area.
Re: Netflix No Longer Works On Wii U Or 3DS, So Where's The Switch Version?
@YANDMAN
That would mean it is the Nintendo Network thing that I mentioned?
I think that is a strange way of doing it, but I guess consoles want to somehow restrict what you can do online.
Re: Netflix No Longer Works On Wii U Or 3DS, So Where's The Switch Version?
@Taffy
Eh, not really comparable.
Re: Netflix No Longer Works On Wii U Or 3DS, So Where's The Switch Version?
So the apps just don't work anymore?
I kind of wonder why that is the case then, i mean, the apps should just be clients that connect to the same server.
So a Switch app, a Android app or heck the internet browser on your pc should all connect to the same library.
Even if an app isn't supported anymore, I would have thought it still works for now...
I guess maybe they have to go through the Nintendo Network which costs something, or something in that direction?
Or do they prevent access from these apps solely because they expect people to be angry if something doesn't work, unless they just officially shut it down?
Re: Scalpers Set Their Sights On The Shin Megami Tensei V Premium Edition
Tbh. I am less annoyed about scalpers, than about the people buying from scalpers.
At the end of day, they are the reason why scalpers exist.
@GrailUK @Friendly
I am not sure there is a way to prevent that kind of thing from happening by regulations either. One of the problems being that they would have to have such regulations world wide, otherwise scalpers could sell through other countries.

He probably could have worded this stuff differently, but he ist correct.
It even annoys ME a little and I am mit even involved.
Re: Shantae Developer WayForward Is Making Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp
@fafonio
While FE isn't the deepest tactical game, which it doesn't really need to be, breaking it down to just "lance - sword - bow" is nonsense.
Re: Shin Megami Tensei V Is A Switch Exclusive Launching This November
@Ralek85
"True, but a) this is no law of nature, just the way the game was designed and b) you said it yourself: you are constantly linking attacks in this game, esp. once you are a couple of hours in. If you are doing just "normal" one-off attacks, you are playing wrong, and the game actually tells you this in abundance."
So you basically do not want the SMT combat system at all, but a heavily changed version? Just so they can make it look more flashy?
I like the combat how it is.
Honestly, considering all you are writing, I think what you want is just a completely different game at this point.
Re: Shin Megami Tensei V Is A Switch Exclusive Launching This November
@Ralek85
The problem is, that you think TMS did it better, which I completely disagree with.
Re: Shin Megami Tensei V Is A Switch Exclusive Launching This November
@Ralek85
Camera in TMS was quite static as well, unless the characters used some special attack, which the game just had a metric ton of.

Well hopefully buying this thing won't cause REGRET.
Sorry, someone had to do it.
Re: May's Monster Hunter Digital Event To Cover Rise 3.0 And More Stories 2, Airs Next Week
@Pokester99
Possibly a combination of two things:
1. Less endgame grind, if you count that.
2. Monsters generally die quicker, making you burn through quests faster. At least that is what it feels like... Would also make sense since long quests are not ideal wegen playing portable.
Well you also don't have to search for monsters as much in Rise.
Re: Rumour: Genshin Impact For Switch Reportedly Delayed Due To "Weaker Hardware"
@Zeldafan79
The Switch is now 4 years old.
Re: May's Monster Hunter Digital Event To Cover Rise 3.0 And More Stories 2, Airs Next Week
@Pokester99
Rise has 43 large monsters right now.
World only had 36.
(Iceborn 71 in total and Generations U had 93)
Re: Nintendo President Outlines Reasons For Increased R&D Spend, Including Next-Gen Hardware
@GamingFan4Lyf
Re: Hitman 3 - Cloud Version Now Includes 60FPS Performance Mode On Switch
@Ventilator
That is not true, as long as you have stored the data somewhere, the servers being gone is completely irrelevant for digital games.
