Re: Soapbox: Monster Hunter Rise Is The Perfect Hybrid Game

Going from MHGU to World and very recently to Iceborne I can say that Rise is somehow an even more convenient game than World/Iceborne! You don't have to do any Palico side quests to unlock quick transport since you have your Palamute, no more hot/cold drinks, maps are smaller than world which makes it easier to not get lost looking for a monster, no more gathering tracks slowly to know where a monster is on the map, gathering at bone piles/mining nodes is faster, and the Wirebug is way more useful than the clutch claw since you can use it both for combat and exploration. I still wish the healing animation from older Monster Hunter games returned because I think healing while being able to move is TOO easy, but other than that I am a fan of most of the changes made.

I was worried that combat in Rise would make fights too easy, but to me the difficulty seems in line with other Monster Hunter games. I have been playing Monster Hunter ever since Tri and I can't remember the last time I have enjoyed the Low Rank mode in a Monster Hunter game THIS much!

@Ralizah and @JuiceMan_V explained it best! The Dual Blades are simple to use and are one of the fastest weapons in the game. I mainly use Great Sword because the MASSIVE damage you do with it is very satisfying to pull off, but eventually I started facing off against faster monsters and moved to Dual Blades.

Once I began thinking of Monster Hunter less like a hack-and-slash game and more like a game of Punch-Out where I had to look to see what attack a monster would use and position myself to counter the monster was when the series finally clicked for me. It's not a game everybody will enjoy/like, but it is a series I started hating and ended up loving.

@NathanTheAsian Sadly Monster Hunter games does not have the best tutorials and they have a habit of throwing too much information at the player, but newer games are trying to be better about this. I started off playing Monster Hunter Tri, hated playing it, and 6 months later I picked the game back up after looking at a few tutorials online to better help me understand the mechanics of the game. The first 2-3 hours of Monster Hunter are usually the worst, but after that it only gets more and more fun. It's the reason I consider the series as my favorite action RPG even though I know it's not for everyone.

@Wool_Sheep I remember seeing the 2nd game on sale and not buying it because I heard about a 3rd game being in development. It is even more confusing when 2 different reviewers gave the games very different scores without a reference to either game.

As someone very interested in this game I will just wait until either game is on sale.

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

I remember thinking I just stopped liking video games because of my disinterest in the WiiU. I still liked my 3DS and aging Wii, but if you asked me if I was a gamer around 2015-2016 I would have said no. Once Breath of the Wild was released I immediately wanted a Switch and have had no regrets since; even if this year is a little slow on releases.
