Re: Analogue Pocket Is Getting Its Own OS - Allowing Users To Explore, Discover And Preserve Video Game History

Gamehendge

Bad journalism is bad. First off: provide some context. For all intents and purposes, this thing is vaporware, with major supply chain problems, tons of delays, production issues, kickstarter problems, etc. Now you write a follow-up article about the software / OS of a non-existent product, reference "A" (singular) recent delay, and allude to the fact that this will be available in December. Misleading junk content. NLife looks more and more like the Nintendo eshop. I understand Nintendo isn't helping you with major releases / major news, but you guys are better than this.

Re: For The First Time In 33 Months, Switch Wasn't The US' Best-Selling Console In September

Gamehendge

Very impressive run indeed Nintendo, well done. Nothing lasts forever.

I know lots of people (myself included) that would have gladly purchased an OLED model if there was stock anywhere. I don't care enough to pay a premium on secondary market and my time is too valuable to fight bots and chase inventory on twitter. Hoping Nintendo can figure out a way to crank out a bunch of OLED's in time for holidays.

That being said, I think that there is a pent-up / growing demand for PS5 and Xbox and if they can sort out there supply issues sooner than later they should reap the benefits. Lack of a switch pro and mid(late?) life cycle of the Switch, I'd have to imagine it will be hard for Nintendo to get back on top.

Re: Where To Pre-Order Nintendo Switch OLED Model

Gamehendge

Really love being based in NA and clicking on this bumped article every week only to be disappointed to find that there are only preorder stock updates in the UK. There haven’t been preorders available in the states since minutes after preorders first went live. At first I blame lazy people at NintendoLife but now it’s just self inflicted insanity and disappointment.

Re: Round Up: Here's Everything That Was Revealed In Nintendo Direct September 2021

Gamehendge

Ooof. This one just really missed the mark for me. A new Kirby seems fun and I had basically forgotten Bayo 3 existed (I thought it was Astral Chain 2 in real time until the series namesake appeared). But other than that, it mostly just felt like a nostalgia act and watered down ports. Actraiser made me smile though.

Squinting real hard to see anything on the 2022 Switch horizon I'm really excited about other than BoTW2. Fortunately my backlog on this amazing system will keep me busy for years.
Genuinely excited and happy for all the Switch fans who are hyped up about stuff from this Direct.

Re: The Analogue Pocket Has Been Delayed Again

Gamehendge

Definitely want one someday, slick marketing on this one. But the way they've handled the pre-orders, communications, PR, supply chain and/or manufacturing issues, etc., on this one is pretty disgraceful. Cheering for them to succeed and deliver on the original promise for the Analogue Pocket at scale, but can't say that looks like a smart bet right now.

Re: PSA: You Can Play Mario Kart Live Outside, But We Wouldn't Recommend It

Gamehendge

Yeah...not for nothing, but whether or not wifi is required is a pretty huge and important factor for a lot of people in determining whether or not to make what is a pretty substantial purchase. I'm no bastion of journalistic integrity, but you probably shouldn't just guess on significant product features.

Everywhere I tried to pre-order this thing was sold out. I was fortunate to have been able to order one this morning and will be picking it up curbside later today, but the thing is now 100% sold out at every local retailer within a 150 mile radius. In an era of ebay scalpers and 3rd party resellers scooping up limited stock of Nintendo products, misinformation can potentially cost people a lot of money.

Re: Michel Ancel Responds To Accusations Of Toxic Leadership During His Time At Ubisoft

Gamehendge

Creating a hostile work environment is a real thing and it has a real legal definition and real legal consequences. So does sexual harassment in the work place, racism in work place, etc., all of which of course are completely despicable and obviously unacceptable. But being accused of "toxic leadership" is hollow and meaningless and until some facts or testimony come forth to warrant an alternative conclusion, I'd encourage everyone to exercise some restraint and not be so quick to convict and execute the guy.

Re: Rayman Creator Michel Ancel Announces Retirement From The Games Industry

Gamehendge

Wish him all the best. Rayman Legends is a masterpiece and I have even more appreciation for the game as it was really one of the first games my son (now almost 8 years old) started playing on his own and really got into.

If I am being totally honest, Rayman was kind of like my son's "Super Mario Bros." in that it's an accessible side-scroller with a clear cut goal ("run to the right") and relatively simple controls. We played New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe on the Switch as I was trying to indoctrinate him with Mario, but frankly speaking the game can't hold a candle to Rayman Legends.

I've showed him other Super Mario side scrollers, but they seem outdated to him and just don't really resonate with him the way Rayman does. Rayman Legends is his baseline for what a good side-scroller and good game design is and I am very ok with that being his "gold standard" at this point in his gaming career. The music / rhythm levels in those games are some of the most creative well executed levels I've played in years.

Re: Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase Appears Out Of Nowhere, Watch It Here

Gamehendge

@TheFox

Yeah, I know that JustDance ships some units annually like clockwork, and I figure Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Puyo-Puyo have a dedicated and loyal fanbase that will support any offerings (be it spinoff, remaster, or new mainline release) from those franchises. I will never fault any business for making money and I try to use that rationale to temper my personal disdain for what I just watched.

Re: Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase Appears Out Of Nowhere, Watch It Here

Gamehendge

Ooof. I hope they at least had enough self-awareness and conscience to ask themselves "should we really upload this?" Maybe there's enough sales figures behind these franchises that makes this abomination make sense as a data driven decision, but that was profoundly disappointing to me personally. Not a single title I was remotely interested in and somehow the whole was still less than the sum of it's horribly uninteresting parts.

Re: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition Multiplayer Is Region-Locked, But It's Not Clear Exactly How

Gamehendge

What a disgrace. SE is absolutely terrible at online. For FFXI, it's somewhat excusable because that game is 20 years old, but they had this insane convoluted online account system where you had to manage online subscription separate from the actual FFXI game launcher. There was some half-baked card game built into that eco system called tetra master or something nobody ever played.

Saddest part is they basically repeated this mistake with FFXIV. At the beginning you literally couldn't pay for an online subscription with money. You had to go to a separate account management website completely separate from the game launcher, log in and buy "crysta" their magic crystal currency. Then you could pay your monthly subscription fee with "crysta".

Re: Review: Faeria - A Superb Mix Of Board Game And Card-Battling Action

Gamehendge

Is there a significant single player campaign / adventure mode or is this more like other traditional card games where the real game is against other real players?

I'm no card battler expert, but I think it's fair to say that while Hearthstone and MTG: Arena might have some adventure modes, the lion's share of the gameplay is a card-battler vs. other real life opponents. I've re-read this review couple times and didn't get a clear answer.

Re: Switch Production "Has Almost Recovered" From Coronavirus Difficulties, Says Nintendo

Gamehendge

I won't pretend to know anything about JIT supply chain logistics, procurement, production, etc. but at the end user / consumer level, the scalpers margins are shrinking which leads me to believe that the supply & demand curve is finding a new balance.

So many factors can impacting the supply & demand cruve...confluence of COVID-19 pandemic fatigue, Summer weather, shiny next-gen consoles on the horizon, broad base appeal of AC:NH, overreaching scalpers / market greed, actual increase in supply, etc. 3rd party resellers were moving $500+ Switches back in March / April and couldn't keep them on their virtual shelves. The price of a new Switch seems to now be in the ballpark of $400. Lots of tools to help you snipe the limited stock that trickles into retailers daily if you care to compete with the 3rd party resellers for the $299 retail price tag, but the real and only market has unfortunately become 3rd party resellers on Ebay or Amazon equivalents that have accounted for the overwhelming majority of all Switch units sold in the last 6 months.

I sincerely hope their is an overwhelming surge of supply which will hurt NoA profits but will just crush a 3rd party reseller market. But I don't see that happening for a while, and the holiday season will most likely exacerbate all of these problems again.

Re: Random: Japanese Scheme To "Smash" Switch Scalpers Doesn't Quite Go According To Plan

Gamehendge

I keep saying this in all these similar threads, but the situation in US is getting worse hourly / daily. Out of morbid curiosity I am always watching amazon reseller prices and eBay auction close prices. Inflation rate over the last 3 weeks driving average sale price of a new ver 2 switch from the low $400’s to $500+ shipped. Don’t know where the ceiling is, but I would not be shocked to see 3rd party resellers moving $600-$700 switches by end of summer and god knows how much pre-holidays especially if there’s another dip in production levels as forecasted by Nintendo. It’s pretty gross. Not sure what the solution is, but I feel bad for gamers that want a switch or who have a switch that breaks.

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Facing New Switch Production Issues That Could Cause Shortages

Gamehendge

This is a major problem. I have a switch and a lite at home, but I’ve been keeping an eye on secondary market just out of morbid curiosity and it’s getting worse by the day / hour. 2 weeks ago, switches were in the ballpark of $400-$450. Now you’d be lucky to find one that sells and ships for under $500 - $550. It’s going to take a massive supply spike to fix this curve and it doesn’t sound like it’s coming anytime soon. I’d be shocked if supply catches up with demand this summer or anytime in calendar year 2020.

Re: IP Attorney Says Nintendo's Wii Remote Court Ruling Serves As "A Warning To Patentees"

Gamehendge

Sounds like a procedural anomaly gave this story much more traction / legs that it deserved. Basically what the lawyer here is saying is that the case should have been over before any kind of trial proceedings even occurred. Without over-complicating things, Summary Judgment is a pre-trial motion that basically blows out a significant number of erroneous claims in all sorts of civil proceedings. For whatever reason, the judge here punted on the pre-trial motion and deferred ruling on the issue until after hearing from the expert witnesses. Biggest winner here is really the attorneys and expert witnesses who got to bill their respective clients for unnecessary trial proceedings that never should have happened in the first place.

Re: Monster Boy Sold More Copies On Switch Last Week "Than The Entire 5 Months Before That"

Gamehendge

I've always said that this game just missed the mark on price point. I made a long post on the switch subreddit basically stating that if they cut the price in half, they would sell 10x the number of copies. My hyperbolic estimate wasn't that far off.

I bought the game on sale (not this 50% off, but maybe @ 25% off a while back?). It's a great game that imo is actually worth $40 considering the production quality, graphics, sound, gameplay, level design, quantity of content, etc., but that doesn't mean it should be priced at $40 in order to be a profitable venture.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Says The Touryst Is "A Revelation" On Switch

Gamehendge

I rarely ever post here, but feel compelled to do so for The Touryst. Bought The Touryst on a whim, and it is completely captivating and utterly charming. Extremely satisfying gameplay loop, perfect mix of exploration, puzzles, action, platforming, etc. Every little detail is perfectly curated and polished and the whole remains greater than the sum of it's parts. I was sure this one was destined to rot in my back log of games I've downloaded but never booted up, but it turned out to be a real gem that is going to end up somewhere in my top 3 games of the year. Do not sleep on this one!!!

Re: Soapbox: Should I Wait For Switch 'Pro' Or Is The 'New' Switch SKU Worth An Upgrade?

Gamehendge

In my household, we need a new Switch due to heavy use (i.e. abuse) at the hands of my 7 year old. The thing is a hot mess of scratches, scrapes, cracked plastic housing, etc., from slimy kid hands, drops from incredibly high distances, and general wear and tear from kids. If I could upload pictures of it, it would give some people here nightmares. My current Switch will become a sacrificial offering to my children, then I will get a shiny new one for myself. Not sure if I have the patience to hold out for a Pro. 99.9% of my playtime is handheld, so the Lite might be for me.

Re: Nintendo Releases Statement About Switch Joy-Con Drift Issue

Gamehendge

People have to understand that there are different meanings to the word "warranty". There's obviously the express contractual warranties you have when you buy the product. E.g. Nintendo expressly warranties the product for # years. Or you buy a supplemental warranty from GameStop or BestBuy or whatever that gives you another express written warranty on certain aspects of the product for a fixed time period.

The legal concepts / doctrines that serve as the basis for this particular lawsuit (and are an element of almost ALL product liability or manufacturing defect cases) are the implied warranties. e.g. Implied Warranty of Merchantability warrants that the goods purchased are in good working order suitable for a particular use (i.e. merchantable). Nintendo has breached this implied warranty by selling us a defective product that they know or should have known was most likely going to malfunction. This type of implied warranty doesn't get reduced to writing and doesn't have a precise shelf life or timing.

Re: The Free Wizard Of Legend Sky Palace Update Is Now Available

Gamehendge

Strongly recommend this one to anyone on the fence. I'm not a huge fan of rogue-anythings, pixel art, or wizards, but I enjoyed the heck out of this game. Very limited elements of RNG or rogue-like randomness. There's a natural and linear growth curve to character development and skill acquisition that feels like you are always progressing.

Re: FDG Entertainment Releasing Monster Boy Demo On Switch eShop Later This Week

Gamehendge

Demo will help ship some "units", but they missed the mark on pricing which I think is the biggest thing hurting their return.

Price conditioning is a thing and the Wonder Boy remake was $19.99? This may very well be 2x the game, but I personally am not willing to pay 2x the price.

My backlog is full of games I overpaid for as I'm fortunate enough to have enough $$$ to spend frivolously on switch games I may or may not ever actually play, so if a games price tag is making me pause then something is off.
