If they released games for it, the excitement would be there... but by releasing only 1 game per week total (2 sometimes in Europe, up to 8 in Japan) it isn't hard to see why there is very little consumer interest. At some point, even the most diehard fan gets annoyed and stops caring about it.
Of course, it doesn't help that Nintendo is stupidly slow with it. The number of times publishers have had a handful of games ready for release, just for Nintendo to stop the release altogether, refuse to release the titles on the same day and delay them for weeks and even months... no surprise that third-parties don't wanna deal with Nintendo's BS in that regard.
@Quorthon wow you sound like quite the douche snobby brat. You are a developer? congratulations, so am I and 100s of people I interact with on a daily basis. Sorry to burst your bubble, but that doesn't make you special, or more entitled to an opinion (however wrong it may be in this case) than anyone else, nor does it mean you deserve any special treatment.
Developers deserve to be paid for their job, that is very true and an excellent argument against all sorts of piracy (downloading illegal music and movies from the internet, using emulators on your smartphone, using custom firmwares on your console, etc.), but an awful argument against customers making a decision on what they do or do not want to purchase. So what if the crap sony paid in dev-kits for is also $20 or more on PSN? Most people get indie games for free or well below their MSRP on pretty much every platform BUT Nintendo's, and that matters quite a bit. Customers decide what is or isn't worth the price tag for them and can decide whether they want to invest the time and money on it or not. Mario vs Donkey Kong and Affordable Space Adventures are vastly different games, to the point they are very likely completely different markets and sets of people. Also, Mario vs Donkey Kong was made on a considerably bigger budget than Affordable Spaces Adventures. That doesn't make either one more or less deserving of attention, praise or sales. Their quality, target audience and price point does, and matters a lot more, whether you like it or not.
@ULTRA-64 umm, no? Check your facts. Diddy Kong was created by Rare, yes, but it is completely owned by Nintendo. The recent work with Nintendo Spencer is talking about are:
GBA Donkey Kong Country Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge Banjo-Pilot It's Mr. Pants Sabre Wulf Diddy Kong Racing DS Viva Pinata: Pocket Paradise
And knowing how scared NOA specifically is of releasing anything made by Rare, probably some consulting / permission for Donkey Kong Country, Land and 64, but all of those are as far as we can tell, only because they are developed by Rare (so a lot of code that may be in a gray area at the moment). The IPs have very set in stone homes: Donkey Kong related? Nintendo, everything else Rare made? Microsoft, Code and Assets? co-owned.
@Searanae Did you play the remakes? Did you experience the Stop n Swop functionality or the slight tweaks in game play to make for a more polished experience? If not, go play them, and then try to say they are anything short of fantastic.
@Zombie_Barioth The people that made the decisions on Nuts n Bolts are the ones that are at Playtonic now. Have you read any of the interviews with the Nuts n Bolts team at the time? As they worked on a new Banjo-Kazooie, they did the same thing they did in Tooie: take the previous game as a base, and make everything bigger. Eventually the worlds were too big to traverse on foot, and they had this cool other mechanic they had been developing for custom-made vehicles, plus the experience from Donkey Kong Racing / Banjo-Kazoomie / The Fast and the Furriest so it all came together into what we now know as Nuts n Bolts. Sure it's easy to try to blame Microsoft since it seems hating on them is the cool thing to do nowadays, but if anything Microsoft's fault is not being involved enough (probably due to lacking the experience to lead this kind of games).
I mean, after all, Rare is the same company that back in the 90s made a trilogy of games based on shiny new but otherwise unproven technology at the end of the life cycle of a console generation for no other reason than they had this cool new tech around and they wanted to play with it, and most recently they went on to create yet another trilogy of games based on shiny new but otherwise unproven technology at the end of the life cycle of a console generation (With the final game bleeding over to the next generation). If you didn't catch it, that would be the Donkey Kong Country series and the Kinect Sports series, both based on the "ooh, shiny! Let's see what we can do with this" approach. Both incredibly fun games and otherwise completely separate set of games. I assure you had they been a part of Nintendo at this point, they would have been leading the Wii Remote Waggle-fest race, and being one of the first (and last) releases using exclusively the MotionPlus.
@BaffleBlend That is, in fact, very wrong. Microsoft never thought, or intended, to get Donkey Kong by buying Rare. A single guy from Microsoft, during their first visit to Rare, thought his company now owned Rare. See the difference there?
As to why they bought Rare, it was probably for the talent and legacy more so than the IPs, seeing how Nintendo used to own the IPs as well, and they gave them back to Rare during the buyout...
@Searanae Back when Microsoft bought Rare, Nintendo made sure to give them all of Rare's IPs that weren't tied to an already established Nintendo franchise, so it really was a case of Nintendo not wanting them.
Nuts and Bolts was a great game by any standards (except the 3D Platformer Collect-a-thon standards, but it would be very stupid to judge it by those standards since it isn't that kind of game), and the Kazooie and Tooie remakes were fantastic so I don't think you even know what you are talking about there buddy.
@FragRed yeah, we know what would have happened: absolutely nothing different from what it is right now. Rare is Rare, they have always been Rare, they are where they are out of their own choice and anyone with any understanding of how the industry runs and what has been going on there knows this. Rare has had a lot of freedom since they were bought by Microsoft, in fact according to many current and former employees, they have perhaps had too much freedom, and certainly more freedom and support than they ever had with Nintendo.
Another week, another slap in the face by Nintendo of America, pretty par for the course...
I guess I will hop on the Ultimate Game Sale that Microsoft has going on. Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft seems to be pretty willing to let me give them my money.
Everything, specially the Firmware version loaded on the North American New 3DS XLs, point at a manufacture date of no later than October 31st. Nintendo had the stock for this launch back then, it just held onto it to try to maximize sales of the previous model at the full price point and keep GameStop's rage at bay. Remember, GameStop paid for an exclusive NES-style regular 3DS XL, which was released in November. If Nintendo had launched the New 3DS XL when they had it ready several months ago, they would have risked their relationship with one of the biggest retail chains for their products. Besides, I assure you Nintendo isn't upset about the extra sales they got from clueless parents that got their kids a 3DS XL for Christmas who would've otherwise bought the more expensive to make New 3DS or waited for a restock given the current inventory issues with it.
Nothing to cry over here... Shovelware going elsewhere? good!
Remember: RCMADIAX is also the same dummy that made Spikey Walls, a poor, low-quality Flappy Bird clone and released it on the eShop... maybe if he hadn't alienated most of the potential customers just for greed his other games would have sold better...
@NintendoFan64 think about it again... those that do these for fun won't be upset or affected by this. Nintendo's policy only affects the greedy people like pewdiepie who do it for the money.
@LordOfGamez You don't need the 32 GB. If you are going to be buying from the eShop, you are gonna need an external hard drive regardless. The Deluxe Digital Promotion ends this year in just 21 days so there's no longer a big reason to get the 32 GB over the 8 GB one (the missing accessories can be had for $6 directly from Nintendo)
Knowing Nintendo I don't have much faith on them making a good phone. They would probably end up slapping the crappy Android OS, and I would rather not have a reason to jump ship :/
Also the article is terribly wrong to assume android had much -if anything- to do with Samsung's success. Samsung's success comes from the same place Apple's does: marketing and great design. Most people out there, when they buy a Samsung phone, they aren't buying an Android phone, they are buying a Samsung Galaxy phone, the OS it comes with is irrelevant to the mass market.
The other great pitfall of android is security, or well the lack of it. Piracy would be almost instantaneous (as it is on android nowadays, not even the Kindle or Nokia X devices are safe).
@ZenTurtle Nintendo anticipated that. While Mario, Peach and Yoshi had ~100 units per store, those you mentioned (and Villager and Fox) got 0 - 10 units per store (Villager and Marth, for example, only got 4 of each at my local Toys R Us, 0 of each at my local Fred Meyers and 2 of each at my local Target)
And the self-entitled donkeyhole circus continues... sad to see the Virtual Console die before it had any good chance to make a difference. Please watch the profanity — TBD
@Lizuka and donkeyholes like smealum and his supporters won't help the issue. Without defending NOA's stupidly bad handling of the VC, piracy never helps. If you think releases are slow now, wait until piracy is commonplace for it.
Also, doesn't allow piracy but allows emulators, which enable piracy of old games, which means piracy of the Virtual Console... I guess any chance the Virtual Console had will die November 22nd
Anyone who thinks it won't allow piracy is plain out silly. Once the floodgates are open, they can't be closed. This self-entitled donkeyhole is simply going to try to prevent piracy, while allowing unsigned code execution... that's just plain out stupid. Expect developers to slowly start retiring support for the 3DS once piracy becomes widespread without the need of additional hardware in the next couple days...
Comments like that tell heaps about the quality of the product. It isn't a good sign if even the creators doubt their product is good enough to stand to competition.
And of course PS4 is first, gotta fulfill that contract with the devil...
I hope the boost in sales in Australia makes up for the drop in sales in America and Europe. Any informed customer on the fence about it knows it isn't safe to buy one until the new one comes out... good that it is coming out there, but stupid that it is very far from a global launch. Sometimes it feels like Nintendo thinks people are stupid. In this day and age, they can't keep hoping nobody outside of the country will see the direct...
Lost all respect for RCMADIAX when he announced this. Will certainly not be supporting any of his games, or any games he is collaborating in from now on. Making a statement and highlighting a problem with the consumers is one thing, throwing utter garbage at the store and making it worse for everyone involved -both consumers and developers- is just plain disrespectful and something to be frowned upon.
As far as the review goes, honestly, 4/10 is extremely generous for this game... Not even the original flappy bird, or any of the countless clones that even had more and better features than this one, deserve that rating.
So it infringes on the rights of multiple jerks that infringe on Nintendo's copyright and enable other jerks to use their stolen copies of games... so? Go RetroN!
@drunne1178 I know. Have you seen Japan? they still get 2-3 per week per console (Wii U and 3DS) .America is lucky to get 1 different on each, a lot of times we get the same on both.
