It's really just a way of releasing a bunch more mario games without looking like they're releasing a bunch more mario games! I mean, how is New Luigi U any different than the extra levels where you can play as Luigi in Mario 3d land? At this point, even I have to pick and choose which mario games I wanna play and which I don't since there's so darn many and I wouldn't mind playing something else besides a mario game every once and awhile! If you add the potential of a Mario Kart U and Mario Galaxy (or whatever) U well, that's a lot of darn Mario games! I'm sure these are quality products, but time will tell if the brand holds up from all this saturation!
He's talking about stuff lie the Arieth thing where she dies and there's no way for you as the hero to bring her back. So you spent all the time leveling her and then they kill her off and a phoenix down won't work! That doesn't change the gameplay, you just lose a character in a way that wasn't based on your choices. Something like a plot twist in a game that changes the gameplay, like losing your brother, or having your water gun taken away actually does work and weaves itself into the experience!
Kid Icarus was an awesome game and the story meshes with the levels in the title extremely well IMO although some find the game too chatty. I liked it however. Trouble with games trying to be movies is that movies are movies it cost a lot less to buy a big blockbuster than it costs to play Uncharted.... or any other short movie like experience... the movie probably has a better story, better cinematagrophy, etc. than the game. I'm just saying trying to make games a similar experience hurts games because you get a better experience from movies and it's cheaper! Does that mean no in game cut scenes? No, just realize your a video game and not trying to replace the movie going experience!
If the Wiiu became all about Nintendo games, indie games, and quirky japanese titles... well, that would be more than enough games for me to play! Stuff like Skyrim or Bioshock I'm getting for PC anyway.
Consoles needed to get back to basics and become specialists in playing games, NOT crappy PCs. So thus far, I think the Wiiu still has the potential for having one of the best possible futures. Even if the AAA companies just keeps focusing on the graphics in an industry that's in trouble, well I think the bottom is going to fall out on that system eventually.
I'm guessing small japanese devs will go for Wiiu and 3ds as a home and Western indie devs will find a home on PC and smartphones.
If it was anything less than Wii sales it was going to be viewed as a "major dissapointment." Haven't people been saying it's done better than 360 and PS3 at their launch? If that's true why all the hate? There's no AAA ie 3d mario, Zelda, Metroid, for the system yet either. If the system really is in trouble Nintendo will say "Here's mario, here's zelda, here's smash brothers, and here's a priced drop." They'll be fine!
I'm much more concerned about the new Sony and Microsoft consoles then I am Nintendo. I don't see why everyone is so convinced that they're going to be able to pull it off again this gen. There's plenty of other options for getting third party content, prices are way cheaper, and you feel like a valued customer. They have a lot to contend with!
One wrong move, they piss people off too much, get them too fed up with all the Bologna and the industry will completely reinvent itself, probably in a way no one saw coming! I mean, how many people saw the smartphone craze coming, that's what i mean!
There's too many contenders out there waiting for these monolithic companies to F it all up and come in with the open platform alternative.
Fact is, nintendo didn't see Discs coming, not really. Sony and Microsoft didn't see the casual games crazy coming. I think we're due for another disruption but I doubt it's coming from the big three this time!
Plus, why didn't they just say, "The game is taking longer than expected to develop and we want it to be perfect so we're giving it another 7 months. Also, development costs have become so high on the project it will need to go multiplatform to help with sales." Most people would have been angry but would have accepted that answer. Isn't it PR people's job to lie to us, lol!
I more see this as a bad move for Ubisoft. A february release was perfect timing for the Wiiu version because there's not a lot of content on the system at the moment and many people would have bought this game new. In September it's going to be competing with Wind Waker, New 3d Mario and Mario Kart. Plus 360 and PS3 owners are going to be worried about Grand Theft Auto and saving up for their next gen systems. Wiiu is probably one of the few markets, that would put in 50-60 dollars for a sidescroller.
All the doom and gloom towards Nintendo just has to do with unrealistic expectations. The game would have gone multi-platform regardless, this was just a bad way to go about it.
Oh and the new Yoshi game will probably be out by then too, I forgot.
So yeah, a lot more content to compete with. Meanwhile people may have BOUGHT a Wiiu for the Rayman game as people were really digging it at demo kiosks I saw. But maybe that's it. Maybe Ubisoft is scared to death of the risk in being a system seller! Maybe corporate would rather leave that task to Nintendo to create content that sells the device and then come in as a "MeeToo" product once Nintendo's games have sold more systems.
Anyway, I still think the Wiiu version will probably be the one to own.
I dread "next-gen" anyway because it's going to be more bs. First of all, the first several years they'll probably produce mostly photo-realistic games with bad art because they're going to be so focused on warranting the extra horse power. Then it won't be until almost near the end of the lifecylce, when the photorealism gimmik has worn off, that we'll see things like Borderlands and Dishonored where it has a striking art style makes up for the 5 or 6 year old hardware.
Graphical limitations have always made for pretty games because they HAVE to rely on great art, they can't say "it looks super real" and call it a day. And i'm not saying realistic games suck, I'm merely say many studios will rely on horespower over good artists to make the sale to the consumer during the first few years of a console.
That's partly why so many realistic looking games don't hold up today. Aesthetically they probably looked like garbage back then too, we were all just impressed with the technical bump.
The next problem is "next-gen" is likely to just be a continuation of the bs with on disc dlc, online passes, micro-transactions, etc. I feel like Wiiu brings things back to its roots and I'm excited! The Wiiu will not be an Xbox, however, and you're going to need to still buy a new Xbox if you want an Xbox. That's always the criticism of the Nintendo console in the states, "It's not an Xbox." Well no **** sherlock!
I'm still very much on the fence on whether or not I'll participate in "next-gen". If the Wiiu ends up having a lot of good games that are different but just as good as the stuff on other consoles I'll probably skip it!
If big budget games like this are tough to recoup losses on 3ds I can't imagine the Vita situation! I suppose you can argue there's more of an audience on Vita, (or will be in the future or whatever) but with Vita you're talking about making a "next-gen" game specifically for a handheld! I suppose we'll be seeing a lot of crossovers on that platform too in the future!
All those words annoy me. It's like if films came out and they, "Oh this film markets to movie buffs, not for a regular audiences." There's movies that are for a certain niche, but that's just not the spin you'd put on it. That would be seen as a flaw in a piece of work if people outside of a certain niche couldn't also enjoy it. Especially with games you want to reach as broad an apeal as possible and I think that's all Nintendo is attempting to do with both 3ds and Wii u.
I'm starting to think that hardcore gamers suck at (new kinds of) games! Like "hardcores" (whatever that term really means, it's just a marketing buzz word) bitching about all the new kinds of control schemes on the original Wii. The Wii was the problem before, now it's that the WiiU is too different than Wii, lol. Seems like gamers play games a ton and don't like a new interface because they might suck at it. I didn't have any issues switching focus between the gamepad and the TV. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, didn't this guy make an on rails game for 360 that he said wasn't on rails and it was? Boo!
I don't think the Wii U was designed to be exactly the same as the Wii, it's definitely a new direction and a new experience. I'm glad they're on some level keeping the old controllers compatible, however. The philosophy is still there. The first controller was a TV remote with game buttons, this is a tablet with game buttons. They got the idea that it's good to replicate the style of other devices in their controllers, and it works. People see this at the demo kiosk and get very interested to know more because they understand an iPad or an android tablet.
I think the difference is the Gameboy was a massive brand for Nintendo and the DS was an experimental, new device at the time. They wanted the OPTION to fall back on Gameboy if DS pulled a virtualboy. But the Wiiu is a sequel in the already popular Wii brand. A new console in three years would be a risky endeavour in and of itself and with the money they're pumping into Wiiu, unlikely. They said this about the Wii too. That it would be done in three years in favor of a Wii HD. The graphics race just isn't the priority for Nintendo anymore.
