Fall Guys was a surprise hit back in 2020. The then-indie developer Mediatonic’s take on the battle royale genre starring those funny little jellybean characters took the world by storm during the height of the COVID pandemic. After an almost two-year wait and coinciding with its free-to-play launch, Fall Guys has finally landed on Nintendo’s turf with a solid, albeit flawed conversion.
For those of you unacquainted, Fall Guys is a 60-bean battle royale game show. Rather than the usual battle royale fare of blasting your enemies into a bloody pulp — or sending garbage in Tetris 99 — Fall Guys is a platformer in which you compete in several different rounds of minigames to take the crown at the end of the show. Think of it as the video game equivalent of Takeshi’s Castle (from which some rounds in Fall Guys are taken directly), a show that any Americans may know by its vastly inferior Craig Charles-less version, MXC.
Fall Guys' matchmaking is split into shows; you have the ‘Main show’ in which you and 59 other beans compete solo to win an elusive crown, which is also in rotation. You also have the option to compete as part of a two or four-person squad to win shards (of which 60 make up a full crown). There’s also a selection of rotating show types which range from being as simple as squads with three players to specialised shows like Jump Around, which gives you two straight rounds of 'Jump Club' (followed by its finals variant 'Jump Showdown').
The game's rounds fall into different categories. Making up the majority are races, in which you must manoeuvre your bean through treacherous courses with only the top percentage of players qualifying for the next round. Then there's Survival, in which — as the name implies — you must survive as long as possible, either until a timer runs out or a select number of players are eliminated. Hunt focuses on objectives such as having a tail when the timer runs out or spending a certain amount of time within a certain zone, and Logic, which consists of a couple of fruit-based memory games. Rounding out these categories are Team and Finals, which are variants of other categories focused on teamwork or being the last bean standing.
So what’s new with the Switch version? Aside from the obvious addition of handheld and docked modes, not much. All six seasons of content are included off the bat as well as a brand new seventh season ironically named ‘Season One’, with each one having a specific theme like Jungle, Future, or Medieval. As the Switch release coincides with the free-to-play launch, features that are new to the game such as a premium battle pass are included.
Running at 720p/30fps in handheld mode and 1080p/30fps in docked mode, Fall Guys’ gameplay remains unaffected by the move to Switch. While we’ve experienced no noticeable frame drops during our time with it, the menus and end-of-round screens seem to be a bit laggier than usual (while this could very well be attributed to server issues, it was not present when we checked other versions of the game). The big catch, however, is that every other player in the match appears to be rendered at half the frame rate in both handheld and docked modes. While this has no effect on gameplay, it looks incredibly choppy and sticks out like a sore thumb in the otherwise smooth conversion to Switch.
The Switch release includes cross-play and cross-progression through the use of an Epic Games account, meaning all of your progress, emotes, and costumes (yes, even the Playstation character ones) will carry over to Switch. If you owned a copy of the game previously on Playstation or PC, you’re also given the legacy pack, which includes exclusive costumes, nameplates, and free access to the first season's premium battle pass. Worth noting, however, is that there is no guarantee that Switch owners will be able to access legacy content like the Sonic and Doom crossover costumes — unless of course they’re rotated into the shop once again.
However, due to the introduction of the premium battle pass and premium currency ‘Show-Bucks’ along with it, Mediatonic has made some changes to the previous in-game currency. Kudos — the game's main currency — will no longer be given out after every game and can now only be earned through challenges, and only spent on items with a common rarity. Additionally, Crowns — which were previously earned from winning shows and were able to be spent on special outfits — are no longer spendable, with their only use now being the crown rank system. All of your account's remaining crowns will be exchanged for Kudos. For veterans of the game this is pretty disappointing considering Crowns used to feel like a big reward allowing you to get the best costumes.
Conclusion
Fall Guys’ brand of chaotic fun is still great all of these years later, and the free-to-play Switch release is no different, assuming you can ignore your opponents' choppy frame rate. While there are some disappointing elements linked to cross-progression, those ultimately won't matter if this is your first time entering the Blunderdome. Some moments of lag and frame rate quirks aside, the Switch version offers a solid way to play if you're looking for some barmy 60-bean battling and the barrier to entry has never been lower.

Jeez, the Switch version of this game didn't turn out so hot. Still seems good enough for the people who waited to play this game on Switch, and the cross progression for existing players is great.
But we'll see if this game will do great free-to-play, or it will simply be knocked out.
Goes to show how a little extra money for exclusivity can ruin the hype. They shouldn't have accepted Sony's money to make this a PS timed exclusive.
Takes like 5 minutes to find a match haha..
Guess the community is kind of gone after it being out for so long. Or maybe I'm just spoiled by Epics Fortnite where it takes all of 20 seconds to find 100.
So basically...the experience on the Switch is about...hm...average at best, eh? I suppose that's fine. Though abit of tweaking could've been helpful.
At this point, I think most people would prefer to stick with the PC version. There are better alternatives anyways. I guess the Switch will do fine for those who have no access to a hi-spec PC or just want to play portable.
One major question not answered here:
Do you need NSO to play it?
@Bunkerneath No, all f2p games don't require that awful NSO.
The performance sounds a bit like the gameplay!! But if it keeps the fun element then I'll play a few games.
It's a shame that they removed the ability to spend crowns on costumes. Obviously Epic do need to monetise the game in some way now that it's gone free to play, but it's sad that it had to be this that bit the bullet. I wonder how the game will motivate people to try to win games now, if not by the promise of cool skins.
Today I learned that the Americans got Takeshi’s Castle minus Craig Charles. That’s like getting a meatball sub minus meatballs.
@SteamEngenius Thank you. That information really should have been in the article, as I was wondering the same thing.
This game is a little too chaotic/random and frustrating for me. You never really feel like you’re in control of your character, so when dumb s*** starts happening to you, it’s really not much fun.
@ModdedInkling Wasn't the PS Plus release the thing that skyrocketed awareness for the game in the first place? Not only did it become the most redeemed PS Plus game of all time, but it was also the number one streamed game upon release if my memory serves me right. I'd say without that boost there wouldn't be nearly as much people who heard about the game and were waiting for it to go free to play.
@SteamEngenius
Or it's 630am where I'm at, not everyone is awake this early to play Fall Guys
Hope there is a 30fps only mode for cross play, otherwise it's a huge disadvantage for us peasants.
Too late to the table I guess!
People would have said it was too late for it to come on the switch or the new ftp model sucks.
Not gonna lie, I’m not a fan of the changes ether, and guess what it works just like Fortnite, why am I not surprised lol.
Visually I think it actually looks great, I thought it would look like garbage to tell you the truth, though I have only seen it, yet to have played it.
All in all, probably going to stick with the ps4 version.
Performance issues aside, it's great to have Fall Guys on Switch. It's a great fit for the system.
@Judgedean
Why? 30, 60 or 120 fps the game plays the same
As a UK-resident American for 12 years, I have seen both MXC and the Craig Charles Takeshi's Castle, so I can adjudicate the Which Is Best Argument, and I hate to say it but MXC is way better than Takeshi's Castle with Craig Charles
I'll give it a try to see what the hype is about. I don't game on a PC and I don't play my PS4 so this will be my first time with this game. I'm wondering how many of the problems pointed out in this review will be remedied in a few weeks time?
The performance is shockingly bad. I mean, come on. This is Fall Guys. There's no excuse for having such distracting visual effects.
@steventonysmith Not really, 60fps means smoother gameplay and controls than 30fps
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Ok for a game that has wonky physics and controls on purpose already?
For a person who only has seen some trailers and has no idea what the game is about, this review is very un-informative. I just wonder if I can have a good time logging in for twenty minutes, falling off a cliff a few times, and switching back to whatever I'm playing.
I've no idea what the modes mean, what do you spend in-game money on, and whether it's fun if I don't care about graphics and framerate.
@Zverik
Yes this game has been out for over a year, you can do your own research or watch the countless gameplay videos from the thousands of Twitch streamers so see if it's a game you'd like.
@nessisonett Don't even get me STARTED on that TC reboot where they brought in the Kemp's as commentators and they would constantly pan away from the actual action to see them in a recording booth.
@steventonysmith why would I read NL reviews if I watched gameplay videos and did my own research for every game? I'd spend few hours on the game itself without needing a review then. I play exclusively on Switch, so I naturally don't care for technical things compared to next-gen consoles and PC, and what has changed (? — the game was published just now).
This review is "by the numbers", meaning I can easily find all the facts mentioned elsewhere. What I expected is how it feels to be played on Switch — and there's virtually nothing on that.
Yesssssss after so long waiting it’s finally here!
By far the game I played the least on Steam. Very annoying. The gameplay is horrible, you never feel like you're in control of your puppet. It's very difficult, even with all the skill in the world. Dark Souls is easier than this game. In Fall Guys it is difficult to even walk in a straight line. Zero fun for me.
So glad it’s finally here. Can’t wait to get started.
@Bunkerneath You don´t need to have NSO to play games like Fall Guys, Rocket League (best online multiplayer ever), Fortnite, Brawlhalla....etc...
Just here to clear up some misinformation: The review says that Kudos aren’t given out after every game anymore. This is not the case.
@Arseneal It very much is the case. You will still get fame in order to level up after every game, but once you hit the max level playing games will get you absolutely nothing unless you win (in which case you still get no kudos). There are daily/weekly/seasonal challenges you can do on the side that give kudos but those are finished pretty quickly.
I was playing the PC and Switch version side by side for a few hours earlier and yeah, uhh... the Switch version is not good. Feels like it's running at 15 fps and there's horrible input lag on everything, even menus.
wonder how long until video capture is disabled to "improve preformance" even tho video capture doesn't affect performance in games the Switch handles video capture separately from gameplay
@TheMelodiusRose I agree it does look good and feels good to me other might not think it looks good or feels good but for the people who don't game on PC or other platforms it's perfect

This is objectively not true in the slightest lol.
Just because you personally can't tell the difference doesn't mean it doesn't make a world of change for most people.
Just put it on the first time, almost 5 minutes to find enough players for a match....
Way too little way too late. This should have been on a Switch ages ago. I'll likely do what I did with Among Us: play it once to say I played it, then delete it from my Switch to never play it again.
@Xiovanni I'll see your two weeks and say it will not even been relevant on the Switch after less than one week.
@steventonysmith I'm not sure if you're trolling?
Waited 10 mins to get into a match before i gave up and continued playing snowrunners instead

I’m already online for more than 5 minutes trying to get to the game but still “Looking for players”.
Not a good first impression for my first match ever on this game…
The servers are down and everything wants me to pay. Epic, please stop ruining games
servers clearly down. played at lunch, had 12 games and was in within 30 seconds most times. the cursor is now stuck on the options menu, can't start any games. shame, as i enjoyed it earlier.
i've not played before today, been looking forward to this a lot. hopefully performance improves!! i'm pretty terrible at it, but it's so far fun not mega frustrating... that may change.
and fast, if i can't play it!
EDIT - won't even get to title screen now. says my connection is down yet i'm typing this. giving up till the weekend.
It’s taking longer for me to find matches than it did last night before it went F2P, but I’ve been having issues with the switch version so maybe people are unable to play
Huge letdown...
I'm a big FG fan. And I don't mind the graphic downgrade, but the game's just empty and feels unfinished.
Buggy user interface. I tried to play with friends for half an hour, but for one reason or another we just can't. Sometimes the game just crashes for no reason.
Empty matches. I tried on different serves... There's just no one playing. And when I find a match, people just keep leaving!
Not a fan of the monetization
A pretty bad start overall. But I have faith the developers will fix everything with future updates
@Benjinat If people are "leaving" you might be ending up in games with bots - bots are only coded to work on a few of the rounds, so if one comes up that they can't complete, they will automatically disconnect. I had a game earlier where the player count was at 31 after round 2 but 16 at the start of round 3.
Briefly played it and imo it runs well for having 60 little jelly beans running all over the place. Never played it before so it's a great game to have a blast on, the fact it doesn't need the NSO sub is also a major bonus
I'm not able to get into a game. Rip
Seems good considering the game is free to play, and micro transactions are only cosmetic.
Yeah ...I think I'll stick to the PS5 version later tonight, thanks.
Haven't touched this on the PS4 for a looooong while. I'll definitely be giving it a spin on the Switch, my primary console of play. Shame this version appears inferior. Cheers for the review.
Performance is terrible. It's disappointing just as was Animal Royale performance was on Switch.
I haven't played the game since the Ratchet & Clank event but after hopping into a couple of games I can see it still holds onto some of the magic it had when I first played it back when it was offered for free via PlayStation Plus.
...but that's where the positives for the new F2P model version of Fall Guys ends for me.
My main two complaints are that leveling up the Battle Pass and reaching new tiers is painfully slow (which is probably due to Show-Bucks, in addition to being used for cosmetics, also having a use as a "skip ticket" option for Battle Pass tiers) and that the amount of Kudos you can earn has an apparent cap of 200 Kudos per day.
The ONE thing I'm okay with seeing in the shop is that there's a chance of seeing some exclusive Legacy content (except Valve's costumes because this is Epic we're talking about here) becoming available via the shop, I know that the Big Bad wolf costume currently in the "Wolf of the Night" bundle was given out to players who played the game during the game's first few weeks of release.
@steventonysmith
Thank you. I most definitely will.
playing now. my first time ever. the load times to join a match is wildly slow. LIke 3+ minutes or longer---maybe even 5 minutes. maybe its midday EST so not a ton of people home and downloading but if this is crossplay i'd expect it to be MUCH faster matchmaking.
Gave it a go. Performance seemed solid 30fps to me (handheld). The animation frame rate of other players is really low though, which maybe gives people the impression of performance being bad.
Even won a crown!
Queue times are a big issue. There is a lot of players playing even on steam, so most likely there is some technical issue.
@steventonysmith your own game research? what are we? videogame journalists? Thats why we read this site...
Well, I was eager to try the game... but it get stuck looking for players for 10 minutes before I get bored.
@Abeedo
I'm pretty sure the game got a lot more popularity on PC at a time when people wanted a party game during the pandemic
@ModdedInkling Wasn't that Among Us? Fall Guys was only popular for about two weeks before it, excuse the pun, fell.
@Abeedo
It was Fall Guys, but Among Us killed Fall Guys in those weeks
it took a good 5-10 minutes getting into a match, that was enough to get me not to play. I might try again after a week to see if it will connect better.
Also this is the first time i used my Epic Games Account to my switch, and I was so unrightly afraid of
Epic and what if they did something to my account.
God, why is it always a hate bandwagon. The reason matchmaking is taking so long is because they're having server issues( check out their twitter). And I don't know what performance you guys are getting cause it runs perfectly on my switch.
Just tried it , performs better than I thought it would & it's still alot of fun

@steventonysmith lol “real gamers” are you 13?
Some people have jobs, lifes, friends and other hobbies besides playing videogames once in a while, and not time to do a “research though multiple sources”….its just a video game! (And a free one for that)
@Abeedo
You are absolutely right. Being able to spend crowns on costumes was the sole thing that motivated me and brought meaning to the game.
Tried it out yesterday. Looks great to me. Only drawback was struggling to find a game. Only got to play one game in the space of half hour due to matchmaking issues. Hopeully thats just early teething problems.

@steventonysmith stop hurassing people about what they do and worry about your self..
I realize my comment might have come across as solely flaming Fall Guys as a game, potentially provoking users who like the game. That was not the intention.
I never apologize. I'm sorry, but that's just who I am. (Simpson's quote)
I will try again.
I played the game a lot on PS4 a year ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was also quite good at it, which often helps a lot in liking these type of games.
I mostly enjoy playing games on Nintendo Switch. Not handheld though, only play in docked mode on the big screen. So I was looking forward to playing Fall Guys again on Switch embracing all those crowns I had no doubt was waiting for me.
Yes, the servers are obviously under severe pressure and it takes a long time getting a game going, but that's not the point. I can accept all that.
I finally got a game going and got a 2nd place. It's also not about not winning and being a sore loser. It's the flow of the game on Switch. It's probably an okay/fine experience if you've only played it on Switch. But coming from playing a lot of Fall Guys on PS4, I found the game on Switch nearly unplayable in comparison. Not because the menu lags like *ss, but because the flow in game feels like constant frame drops. You will know this if you have played it on another platform. Being crossplay it's like facing Goliath with David, only this time David's slingshot is broken.
A perfect example is the stage "Hex-A-Gone". On other platforms you can easily navigate your... (what are they called? Guys?)... around the hexes in a precise maneuver clearing alle hexes before dropping down to the next level. That is NOT possible on Switch. Turn your guy and he's already left the hex before your input is registered on screen.
The game should have no problem running just as fine on Switch. We've seen much meatier games run fine, so I think it's lazy and unprofessional by the developers. Either they are just not skilled enough at making a proper port or they just don't care. It's not like they haven't had plenty of time to get it running.
@sik187
I'm good I'll continue with what I'd like to do. But thank you for your concern
@Aneira
You are judging the performance of the game as a whole on launch day of a popular f2p game. The servers had to have been absolutely buckling yesterday and so let's give them a couple days to right the ship and I'm sure this game will run just fine
Funny, how people think the matchmaking problems are from no one playing anymore. They are happening because the servers were absolutely pummeled with record breaking amounts of requests. It's not only the game matchmaking itself. The reward requests giving experience after matches all timed out so you got no progession (although the error states you'll get them later) and Epic's friend platform also was hugely challenged. Game invites often timing out after a second or so.
Whenever you made it through the queue on the server, games were full in a split second.
Give it a day or three, and it will just work much better.
I play regularly on my PS5, definitely didn't take 5 minutes to find matches prior to yesterday. It is clearly a server issue with the onslaught of FTP folks coming in.
I don't understand how folks can find this game so difficult? OBVIOUSLY, the first rounds are chaotic--there are 60 players there homie, but after that you should be able to handle yourself just fine with a little bit of luck. The chaos is not unlike Mario Kart or Mario Party. Dark Souls is not an easier game, to the clown that said that.
Personally, I think this is the best they could've done on Switch's rough hardware. ~60 players at once on a Switch? This is exactly what's going to happen on Nintendo hardware. I mean, look at POKEMON UNITE's low-req GFX, which runs smoother in the menu on mobile. But hey, at least OLED users have a brighter screen!
7 is about the right score. I'm an OG player from PS4 days and was excited to play this handheld. And meh. The buttons are a tad delayed, it's laggy, weirdly bad graphically, and just feels off in general. BUT it isn't unplayable. I got a crown my first game, and the new levels are a lot of fun. Being both on switch and free is a great way for kids to discover Fall Guys when few probably had the chance to.
As for nerfing the crowns. It does kinda suck but they technically already nerfed them when they tied them to level up rewards in the first big update pre-epicgames. I appreciate the kudos at least in exchange.
Fall Guys isn't really about winning anyways. I've put in hundreds of hours and maybe won 20-25 games? It's just silly fun, and great with friends. But it should probably be better than it is on Switch. I'll probably stick to it on my PS5.
Loved it on PS4. So very excited to play it handheld!
@SteamEngenius Fall Guys currently has 55k people playing on Steam alone so it's a dead game for sure.
I'll stick to World Of Tanks Blitz.
Was playing this on the Series X, realized I could get it on Switch for when I felt like being lazy in bed. I expected the load times to be worse, I expected the menus to be laggy, I expected lower performance. But what I did NOT expect was absolute dog poop performance. If Splatoon can run mechanically well in handheld, I figured this would be able to as well. But no.
The review says 30 fps in handheld. That depends entirely on map. Some maps, like Treetop Twister, you'll be lucky if you can stay stable at 20-25fps, with frequent dips, especially if it's the first map of the show and you're in with the full field of beans. There's also input lag and it's atrocious. Doesn't matter if you're using joy-cons, pro controller, or a third party solution, they're all equally bad. On XSX there's zero input lag at all. I push right, I immediately go right. On Switch, pushing right you can feel, and sometimes see, the delay between input and action. In a game where trying to navigate obstacles or avoid falling into pits, this lag is no bueno.
Matchmaking takes forever, which is ridiculous since it's crossplay. But speaking of crossplay, since the game launched I've already had to report half a dozen cheaters — all with the PC icon in their banner, of course. Half of them have been on the hex map where you are trying to be the last one standing. But I've seen speed hacks and flying hacks on seesaw and other maps as well. The only option is to turn off crossplay entirely, which is garbage. There should be options for full crossplay, console only crossplay, or no crossplay.
Already uninstalling it from the Switch. A waste of space waiting endlessly for a match only to get in risk having a PCMR cheater or get saddled with bad frame rates.
