Update []: It's official — Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will be coming to cinemas on 19th March 2027, Variety has confirmed.
Paramount initially announced the movie right before Sonic 3 hit theatres, but now that the recent movie is breaking records all around, the date for the next film has been nailed in.
At the time of writing, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has grossed $218 million domestically, and over $422 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie in the trilogy so far. Sonic 4 should be a guaranteed success then — as long as it's as beloved as the current movie is.
Original Story: We're just one day away from the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie — which introduces Shadow the Hedgehog to the blockbuster franchise — hitting cinemas worldwide. But Variety is reporting that Paramount Pictures has already greenlighted a fourth film.
Shocked? Nope, not us. According to the report, the movie is aiming for a Spring 2027 release. We know nothing else yet, but given that director Jeff Fowler has stuck around for the first three movies, we wouldn't be surprised if he's also on board for a fourth run.
The franchise — which has also spawned a Paramount Plus TV show starring Knuckles — has been box office hits, with the first two alone grossing $725.2 million at the box office. And we expect the third movie to follow suit — it's already predicted to gross $55 million to $60 million in the US alone this weekend.
Plus, the critics have been pretty favourable towards the third entry; it has an average of 61 on Metacritic, and 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the third Sonic movie, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are back and are called on to take on a new foe — Shadow the Hedgehog, who's played by Keanu Reeves. This also results in them teaming up with Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik, who during the movie, reunites with his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.
We know no details about the plot of the fourth movie, but there are currently spoilers going around for the upcoming third film, and if we had to guess, we assume those might tie in with Sonic's fourth outing.
Will you be checking out the Sonic movie this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

How much is too much?
The Rocky of our times
It's interesting to reflect on and contract the almost universal success and profitability that comes from taking these 80s and 90s properties that where made for children and containing to make them for children's today against the almost universal failure that comes from attempting to "update" them to be popular with the same fans that enjoyed them when they first came out.
Props to whoever ignored the loudest voices on the internet and saved us from the gritty sonic-verse made to appeal to a 40+ demographic that I'm sure was almost greenlit at some point.
Not saying I find these movies great. Or good. Or ... watchable ...
But they are not for me, and I think not making them for me was the right decision.
@caseyyy In America we believe in milking something till it's dry. But we're generous. When there's nothing left we toss it aside until it can be milked again.
Sonic Four-ces?
If no Eggman then I will not be too interested
Metal Sonic? Chaotix? Who else is really left? I think they need to be careful not to get TOO carried away with this thing.
The movies are now being churned out at the same rate as the Sonic games over the years.
Hopefully they don't split it into two parts and screw up the physics
I mean, I knew they would and I haven’t seen them myself, but eventually it’ll just lead to a decline in quality and people will lose interest. Like most series.
Ready for them to introduce Amy and Blaze!
I hope they pick metal sonic as the villain since they did shadow. I freaking love metal and he deserves time in the spotlight!
It's still wild they jumped from Sonic 2 & 3 to Adventure 2 for games. Poor Metal Sonic can never get a W.
My thoughts for if there is a CD they could do a blend of CD and 06. Or CD and Heroes.
CD+06: Would be not the same plot but Metal is after maybe the Princess then uses time travel to make it easier to unleash the flames of Disaster and then we finally get our boy Silver.
CD+Heroes: Basically the plot of heroes. With more emphasis on Amy V Metal.
I’m excited for this one. I heard the premise will be Deadly, atleast Six times as exciting as the previous one. I don’t want to get Lost in the World of these movies.
I thought this was already officially announced last month. Only thing new here seems to be the planned release date.
Frankly I'm more curious who the villain will be here (I have an idea of who but won't spoil it), since I can't imagine Carrey would wanna return for the fourth time. Its honestly a miracle he returned for the third, which I'm thankful for.
Yeah I figured, maybe the 4th movie will involve Metal Sonic.
The question is... Will Jim Carey return, or is he done?
@MeloMan He seems to really be enjoying these, I say he's not going anywhere.
Looks pretty cool to me.
I haven‘t seen any of the movies but I can imagine Jim Carrey‘s performance really contributed to their success. I guess if he leaves at some point then their appeal will rapidly decline. Then again, everything gets a little old at some point so for artistic reasons they should probably call it a day by now. But we all know that this is not how hollywood works.
Milk that Hedgehog! 😉
I really thought they were going to end with the trilogy, until news started surfacing that the movie was going to have another post-credits scene. I saw the leaked post-credits scene online because I just couldn't help myself. I won't spoil it for anyone else, but it certainly makes it entertaining to read the speculation in the comments.
It's also hilarious how Jim Carrey kept saying he was retiring, and now all of a sudden he's like, "I actually like doing sequels now, maybe someday I will do another Grinch or The Mask movie," lol.
I’ve never played any games, but I watched the first and am gonna watch the second before going to see the third
Meh, I really want to see a 3D animated Sonic movie like the Super Mario Bros Movie.
The live action hybrid Sonic movies are good but I half feel they're actually blocking a proper one set in Sonic's world and not the real world from happening.
@Coolmusic People say Metal Sonic cannot work on his own, but at the same time he can. If anyone remembers Sonic Heroes, Metal Sonic actually by his own sheer desire to surpass Sonic evolved.
There's even a dialogue exchange during the final battle where Metal Sonic essentially acknowledges he's nothing more than a copy of Sonic.
Metal knows Sonic is the original, but sees Sonic has a something he must surpass. To prove that he isn't the "real" Sonic, but rather what Sonic represents. He's the perfect version of the original.
Metal often gets overlooked due him being just a robot, but Sonic Heroes, was the first game we got to somewhat see Metal Sonic being more than just what other iterations were. It was machine fighting to prove it was better than the real thing.
I mean he has to be around long enough for a smash brothers movie...
Isn’t it “greenlit”, not “greenlighted”? Asking for a friend…
Oh god- Make it stop!
YEEHAW run it into the dirt REAL fast like
No Jim, no watch. Sorry that's just the way it is and I'm not the only one.
Paramount should do whatever they need to do to get him. Give him a producer credit and a share of the takings, I don't care.
@JSC016 Might be interesting if they adapted Sonic CD. Strip the cast back to just Sonic, add in Amy and Metallix and introduce time travel shenanigans.
Fun!
I woul do a joke post, bu that joke only really works in Spanish.
@MarkyVigoroth being that Spanish is my main language (and I'm sure others as well), I'd like to hear/read it.
Anyway, if they add Metal Sonic, I hope they introduce at least Amy, Rouge and Omega so they do sort of a blend of Sonic CD (kidnapping Amy) and Sonic Heroes (proving his superiority to Sonic [and Shadow] and teams trying to stop him).
I'm happy they gave us two post credit scenes, it's a teaser to two films maybe. Shadow was awesome in this movie.
The fourth should be a Sonic and Knuckles Movie that can lock on to the other 3 movies...
Just saw the 3rd film, the teaser though got me like ahhhhhh!
Not surprised at all because Hollyweird has 0 innovation or talent left. Im sure we will hit 8 or 9 before they start withering off and find a new IP to leech off.
Release the lists!
As I said on Instagram there is enough Sonic characters to go up to at least 10 movies. We still haven't got Amy, Rogue, Blaze, Vector, Cream, Charmy Bee, Espio, Big, Silver, Metal Sonic, Wave, Tikal, Jet or Bean the Dynamite to name a few and Jeff Fowler has said there are a lot of characters he wants to use and he has plans for more spinoffs.
@caseyyy We are far from it. What a lot of non Sonic fans don't realise is the Sonic Universe is like the DC and Marvel Universes and there are a huge amount of heroes that have yet to be in the movies that deserve their turn on screen. Jeff Fowler said before there were a lot of characters he wants to use and he has plans for more spinoff shows too.
There are a ton of video games, animated shows and comic books to draw inspiration from and it is time for the female characters in the Sonic Universe to get their turn to shine too like Amy, Cream, Rogue, Blaze and Wave. 😀
Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine or we riot D:<
Actually wasn't expecting a fourth one, I hope it's still gonna be good! Luckily they have tons of games and stories to draw inspiration from.
They didn't even wait for Jim Carrey to officially quit acting.
Only Sonic could have one of the highest rated films of the year and yet still have Nintendolife be so hostile towards the series.
Are they splitting this into multiple episodes before skipping ahead to the next movie?
I'm betting they're going to disappoint us with no Amy again
Of course he will. It's Sega. This is how they drive their franchises into the ground and destroy any goodwill they'd previously built up. He'll likely be back for a fifth and sixth and spin-off and prequel and so on.
My order of enjoyment of the films goes 1 > 2 > 3, which actually matches exactly how I personally feel about the classic Sonic games too, so it will be interesting to see what I think of the forth Sonic movie.
Didn't three come to a logical conclusion. I haven't watched any of them but from the synopsis it seems like a good stopping point.
I DONT CARE I WANT MY ZELDA MOVIE
(jk im hyped!)
Good. These movies are great and each is better than the last.
Obviously that can't last but as long as it's a good time at the movies I'm fine.
@Swhite29s That would be wild considering the mid-credits scene in the last movie lol
So I'm guessing as long as the Sonic movie series had more characters to tease at the end then the series will continue. I could see them keeping this up til the 10th entry where Dr. Robotnik will return as Dr. Eggman.
Hopefully they reign in Jim Carrey in the next one. I liked him as Robotnik in the first two movies but he was a bit annoying in the third one. The whole "Gerald daddy issue" plot was funny for about 5 minutes. Sadly, it stayed around for most of the movie.
No surprise there, given the mid-credit scene.
I have two boys that absolutely love the Sonic movies (plus the wife and I do as well), so this is definitely great news.
Considering that each has built on the previous installment and been more successful than the last it does make sense for there to be more (and of course, because of the teaser at the end).
In this industry they are always going to follow the money, and Sonic has been a bit of a surprise hit for Paramount and SEGA.
Thankfully though, it seems like the creative team behind the movieverse have taken a decent amount of care to ensure that these films work, especially within the often scrutinised live action setting. Sonic somehow achieved what Super Mario’s Bros. (amongst many other video game adaptions) could not in this particular setting.
There’s also this gathering of background lore and characters that seems to be building up piece by piece, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this does culminate towards something of an “Endgame” style event eventually.
As a fan of the series in general, it makes me happy to live in a timeline where this has been successful. I just hope that Zelda is able to find a similar stronghold and footing, not to mention Nintendo’s second stab in their animated Mario Bros movie venture.
Please- make it stop!
surprised Pikachu
@Serpenterror looking forward to that Sonic 10
The previous ones were enjoyable, but I wonder if they can keep milking this much longer without things getting stale.
I will definitely be watching it. I love all of that Sonic movies, and I really enjoyed the Knuckles show on Paramount+.
