My prediction for the MK World Direct april 17th is 200cc, or something faster, or a new take. The open world and wider roads/tracks are begging for it.
I just realized we haven't' seen any battle modes yet.
I still dream of a dedicated weapon-free online race mode for 200cc (or faster), because I like the speed and skill aspect of it. The online weapon free modes in MK8 were too handicapped by that scattered & segmented community system.
@Tasuki Pretty much, it is an open world Mario Kart so at least in a broad strokes sense it is like Forza Horizons. I think the exact mechanics might actually be different though (IDK because I never played it). In MKW, it still has courses but the courses all exist in an open world. In Grand Prix mode when you transition from race to race you do physically drive from one course to the next between each race rather than being warped to the starting line of the next race. And then in Free Roam mode you can explore the entire world at your leisure.
So is there going to be no downtime between races? I don't like that. A big part of why I enjoy cart/arcade racers is the small bites of gameplay. I'll play for hours that way, but longer sustained gameplay sessions burn me out much more quickly.
Hopefully online mode will be more traditional and focus on single track rotations with downtime after each race for the vote. In any case, the open world is definitely a negative feature for me, I don't find the exploration element appealing at all.
@shake_zula Grand Prix is still just four races with pause to show the points tally in-between just as it's always been. Only difference being the next track starts from the ending of the previous one. The next race won't start until you press the 'Next Race' button.
Knockout Tours are the ones where it's essentially just one long track until you reach the end or get eliminated along the way so it sounds like that might not be up your alley if you're just looking for shorter races with a break in-between.
They haven't shown off the online functionality yet but I'd say it's almost certain that there will be a mode where we just pick individual races much like previous games so I don't think you have much to worry about there.
The presentation in general looks really nice - a good next step for both Mario Kart and Mario as a whole, especially in regards to the character design(and I'm not just referring to the ape).
I don't know about anyone else, but I am absolutely loving the characters' dance moves on the character select. The game is gonna have to be real good to get me off of the select screen!
I am beyond excited for this game! Hopefully US pre-orders open soon....
@PikminMarioKirby Someone told me it looked like the Hot Dog Dance from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and I can't not see it now. Sorry if I ruined it for you now...
This has me quite hyped and has me seriously considering getting a Switch 2 as I wasn't really even going to bother getting one. This along with Hades II and FromSoftware's exclusive title The Duskbloods being huge selling points. 24-player online races are going to be absolute carnage and the knockout races should be pretty hectic as well. I like how the gliders are just 'wings' compared to the huge, well, gliders in Mario Kart 8. Very excited to see more during the upcoming showcase.
@CaleBoi25 It really does. It should be much more subtle and take up less of the screen which will be a huge change considering how chaotic the races will be. I'm really excited to see more!
Oh yeah, like everyone else has been saying, I am enjoying the art direction and how the characters seem to showcase a bit more personality from the footage they’ve shown, such as the way they move and dance on the character select screen. I definitely am enjoying the new direction they are going for in general.
I am curious about who else will be playable, given some people said there were apparently more rows on the select screen and that hints toward more playable characters. I do wonder if the crossover characters will come back…

If you’re curious, the character in my PFP is Flippy from Happy Tree Friends.
@Pastellioli I did notice on NL's video where they were able to play the game that characters had multiple outfits but they were listed as different characters on the character select screen and they were all over the show and it looked a bit cluttered. I hope that was only an issue with that 'build' of the game and it won't be an issue on release.
In regards to more playable characters, I weirdly wanted them to go the Smash Bros. route and go all in on having characters from various Nintendo titles in the game. I mean, they kind of started doing that in MK8 with Link, Inkling, Villager, etc. Obviously something of the Smash Bros. scale won't happen considering Kirby Air Riders is on the way so that probably rules out anyone from Kirby showing up but I do hope we'll get a few more crossover characters!
@Kairuuu I did also notice the alternate costumes were considered separate characters, but it’s strange and does take up a bit of space. The costumes still look cool, but I would like them to do what Smash does with alt colors and costumes where when you select a character on the fighter select screen, and then once you choose them you can select between their original outfit and alternate costumes/colors instead of just having the costumes considered as separate characters.
I do hope for crossover characters again! I would really like if the crossover characters did come back since they were nice additions. I am wondering if the other Mario characters from the Booster Pass in MK8D will return as well, which I do think might happen if the upcoming Direct does go over the character roster. There are probably a lot of characters they haven’t yet revealed, so it’s going to be exciting to find out who’s gonna be there!
Also, cool avatar!

@Pastellioli I do think the costumes are a great idea. They give the game a bit more customisation (although, apparently they've gotten rid of kart customisation?? I'm unsure.) and choosing a costume for your character definitely gives the game more personality. I hope they do something like you describe like what Smash does because it would certainly declutter the character select menu.
I would definitely like to see more crossover characters, for sure. MK8 felt weird to me at times considering it had, for example, the Blue Falcon, two F-Zero tracks, but yet Captain Falcon is nowhere to be seen — maybe there's a reason for that and I just have no idea. I think it would be cool to get a bunch more crossover characters even if they end up being DLC down the line.
Also, thanks! It's Makima from Chainsaw Man, if you didn't know!
