It's time for the final Nintendo Download Update before Christmas Day, and it's a meaty line-up in North America. We have a host of new downloads on both the Wii U and 3DS, two retro offerings on the home console and a whole load of tempting discounts. There's lots to see, so let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update? Oh you! Never mind, the details are right here.
Wii U eShop
99Moves (EnjoyUp Games, $2.49) — Another EnjoyUp Games title to make the transition from portable to home console, this arcade-like experience tasks you with getting through tricky stages with as few moves as possible. We weren't convinced that this one finds the right balance between difficulty and cheapness in our DSiWare review, but will see if this new version can persuade us otherwise.
BLOK DROP X TWISTED FUSION (RCMADIAX, $1.99) — Developed by Leuvsion, this fuses the world of upcoming Wii U eShop title Twisted Fusion with the concept of the falling block puzzler that was the début release for RCMADIAX earlier in 2014. We'll put this to the test for a review.
TOSS N GO (RCMADIAX, $0.99) — The latest budget experience from this developer, it'll focus again on the GamePad screen as the core interface. This appears to be a basic dice game in which you roll for points, supporting single- or two-player matches; we'll see whether we roll the right numbers in our review.
Plenty of Fishies (Nitrolic Games, $4.99) — This is a collection of modes and challenges for single players or groups up to five, it looks set to combine bite-sized challenges with decent variety, including asymmetric multiplayer with the GamePad. We'll see whether this is a deep ocean of fun content or a bit fishy.
Meme Run (Ninja Pig Studios, $4.99) — A runner that's divided opinion with its aesthetic and marketing, in some respects trolling and teasing the player. Damning indictment of modern internet culture of just a load of nonsense? Is it actually fun to play? These are questions we'll tackle in our review.
Cake Ninja 3: The Legend Continues (Cypronia, $4.99) — This series was previously on Nintendo's portable systems and now arrives on Wii U, though seems set to offer largely similar gameplay of slashing up cakes on the touchscreen across multiple modes. We were thoroughly unimpressed with this one's predecessors, but will go in for another slice in our review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Natsume Championship Wrestling (Natsume, $7.99) — Completing a Natsume double header on the Wii U Virtual Console this week, here we have a SNES era wrestling game that also supports four player local matches. There are 12 different fighters, though we felt the mechanics had aged somewhat in our recent Natsume Championship Wrestling review.
Mega Man Zero (Capcom, $7.99) — Release on 17th December to celebrate Mega Man's birthday, this Game Boy Advance spin-off brings yet another fresh approach to the IPs action; we were big fans of this in our retro Mega Man Zero review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Mega Man 5 (Capcom, $2.49 until 22nd December, normally $4.99)
Mega Man 6 (Capcom, $2.49 until 22nd December, normally $4.99)
Mega Man 7 (Capcom, $3.99 until 22nd December, normally $7.99)
SteamWorld Dig (Image & Form, reduced until 1st January)
Little Inferno (Tomorrow Corporation, $4.99 until 1st January, normally $9.99)
Nano Assault Neo (Shin'en Multimedia, reduced until 14th January)
Art of Balance (Shin'en Multimedia, reduced until 14th January)
Wii U eShop Demo
Art of Balance (Shin'en Multimedia, free)
3DS eShop
Toys vs. Monsters (EnjoyUp Games, $1.99) — Undoubtedly arriving with good timing to target kids and big kids alike, this is a strategy title in which you assemble toys to take on monsters in a variety of environments; the developer is claiming that levels and extras will serve up over 20 hours of gaming. We'll see whether this is best played or left under the bed in our review.
Fairune (CIRCLE Entertainment, $2.99) — A budget adventure RPG, in which you save the world from an evil menace by unlocking three statues, fighting monsters, solving puzzles and collecting items along the way. We're still questing through this one for a review.
League of Heroes (Gamelion, $4.99) — This appears to be a rather colourful top-down hack-and-slash title, in which you attempt to save the world from monsters while customising and levelling up various parts of the game. This certainly looks promising, and we'll let you know what we think in our review.
Mes Comptines (RingZero Games, $4.99) — This is a collection of nursery rhymes, with animated videos and professionally sung tracks for young gamers to follow, while there is apparently some additional interaction involved. We'll see whether this hits the right notes.
3DS Retail Download
Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D (Konami, $29.99)
Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods (Bigben Interactive, $34.99)
I Love My Horse (Bigben Interactive, $24.99)
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Mega Man II (Capcom, $1.49 until 22nd December, normally $2.99)
Mega Man III (Capcom, $1.49 until 22nd December, normally $2.99)
Mega Man IV (Capcom, $1.49 until 22nd December, normally $2.99)
SteamWorld Dig (Image & Form, $5.99 until 1st January, normally $8.99)
Art of Balance TOUCH! (Shin'en Multimedia, reduced until 14th January)
Fun! Fun! Minigolf TOUCH! (Shin'en Multimedia, reduced until 14th January)
Jett Rocket II: The Wrath of Taikai (Shin'en Multimedia, reduced until 14th January)
Nano Assault EX (Shin'en Multimedia, reduced until 14th January)
1001 Spikes (Nicalis, reduced from 19th December until 1st January)
VVVVVV (Nicalis, reduced from 19th December until 1st January)
3DS Demo
Cube Creator 3D (Big John Games, free)
Urban Trial Freestyle (Tate Media, free)
Beyond these details, a list of games currently on discount — and it is lengthy — can be found on Nintendo's official website.

Picking up the Shin'en discounts on the WiiU !
Mega Man 6 and 7 are mine! (Finally)
Lots of good deals this week. Take advantage of it and earn those points for the Digital Deluxe Promotion.
To many games that look like they might be interesting along with Shantae and Duck Hunt coming next week.
@TruenoGT You should talk to Nicalis about this.
SNAKE EATER 3D ON THE ESHOP!!!!FINALLLLLLLLY!!! getting it! hope it has a community on miiverse
Oh wow, I was just thinking like 15 minutes ago that I wouldn't mind having Metal Gear Solid, but I'm digital only, so it was unavailable.
You can all thank me any time for my mystical wizard powers.
And for my next trick... Koei Tecmo and Namco Bandai need to follow suit. Samurai Warriors Chronicles, Dead or Alive Dimensions, Tales of the Abyss, and Tekken 3D are missing from the eShop for unfathomable reasons. Pls?
Little Inferno, heard good things about this game.
I think your price listing for Mega Man 7 is wrong. On mine it shows $3.99 down from $7.99. It's a SNES game so its more money.
Come on, Capcom/Nintendo. I want Mega Man Zero in Europe.
@AmyGrrl My bad, that's now fixed.
I played Cube Creator 3D at an event in St. Paul, and it's pretty good. It'll be interesting to see how it fully develops.
Why on earth would Nintendo not put Mega Man Zero on 3DS. Wouldn't that make wa~ay more sense?
Of course if i had my way, i'd make sure it was on both platforms.
I wish they'd update Metal Gear Solid 3DS so you could aim using they gyroscope, like on Resident Evil Revelations. Maybe i'll just wait to play it til New Nintendo 3DS comes out.
Cool I can now finish up my NES Mega Man collection on the Wii U. Now for Capcom to port over 9 & 10 to the eShop.
Ugh. No VC or MOON. Sigh
@DASchenk
It's not Nintendo's choice to put Mega Man Zero on the 3DS. I'm sure if Capcom really wanted to, they could. Pertaining to the VC, Nintendo, for whatever reason, chose to put the GBA VC on the Wii U.
Instead of, you know, the GameCube.
A big week for Mega Man fans! Lots of variety being offered this week. Every week should be like this.
@ DASchenk
Mega Man Zero can already be played on the 3DS with the DS Mega Man Zero Collection.
Also, Meme Run for $5 is lol. May have gotten a few bites for curiosity at $2 like The Letter, but nobody is going to pay $5 for what looks like a free flash game from 1999 Newgrounds.
@HeroOfCybertron Duck Hunt?
@SpookyMeths I would thank you, but it has said for the past 2 weeks that it is coming out today.
Oh, and its a 25,000 block download, on par with Resi Evil Revelations 3DS
@SpookyMeths
I completely forgot about that in-coming travesty. Disgusting.
Such an interesting week. Got the good, the bad, the neutral, and the discounted. Quite a variety to behold this holiday. I don't know what I'll get (so many choices) so I'll go with the Art of Balance demo as a safe vote.
@DASchenk Gamepad is like a huge Gameboy Advance XD.
@ThomasBW84 Just going through my eShop here and it looks like MGS is $20, not $30
Also, probably not too noteworthy, but Canada prices often differ from America. Fairune and League of Heroes for example are $0.50 more. At most, some retail releases like Pokemon are $5 more. I haven't really deciphered a pattern as to which games are a little more expensive and which aren't though.
Might grab Art of Balance on sale....but eh
I'm waiting for FAST Neo
No love for the original Mega Man. Oh well, it was by far the worst of the series, with 2 and 3 being by far the best (and 9 and 10 being remarkably good given the huge time gap). 5 and 6 fall somewhere in the middle, and I'm less familiar with 7 and 8.
I already have Mega Man 2, 3, and 4 for the 3DS, might have to pick up 5, 6, and 7 for the Wii U and hope for cross-buy to someday be a reality so I can have them all for both systems without shelling out a bunch of money.
@AG_Awesome Yes the NES Duck Hunt comes to Wii U vc next week.
@SpookyMeths for that price and gameplay, It really lives up to the title of "Troll game with a Troll face".
Mega Man 7 for $4? The Rare Downloads program cries.
And now I have memories of when the NES Mega Man were discounted, but I missed it. Because NINTENDO...
Because normally expect that if a sale is good THROUGH a certain date in the US, you expect the price to be good through at least midnight EST. But not by Nintendo's logic!
Nothing for me this week. Still waiting for Metroid Zero Mission, the DKC games, & the Donkey Kong Land games.
Nothing for me. Do you guys think NIntendo will put Final Fantasy games on the 3DS Eshop? There could possibly be 5.
Definitely a great looking week for downloads. Already bought the mega man games on the 3ds yesterday and will definitely be getting the ones on the wiiu tomorrow. Also finally gonna get mgs3 and league of heroes looks interesting might look into it. Also thinking of steamworld dig but was always some what unsure of it
Good week on VC to bad I'm backlogged
Darn, those VC games sure are cheap in the American eShop, particularly Mega Man. I don't mean just with the discounts, but their regular prices as well.
Nothing for me this week
I think i will wait for a discount on Metal Gear, glad its finally on the eShop!
Who thinks that next week donkey kong land will come to the 3ds virtual console in North America and the United States
Meme Run. That's it for me.
When the new 3DS comes out nest year I'll grab Snake eater as I really want to have dual analog when I crack into it.
I'm getting Mega Man Zero. Can't wait to play it on the TV!
After checking out the game, I think I will grab Fairune, although not right away.
Interesting to see Mega Man Zero appear, but not on 3DS? Well, since Mega Man Zero Collection exists, there might be a case there. Also glad to finally see Metal Gear Solid SE3D appear on the shop — anyone on the fence about that one shouldn't be, especially when the New 3DS arrives in NA.
Definitely going to purchase some games this week. Gotta get that DDP in before the end of the year. Will try out Art of Balance and purchase Nano Assault Neo.
@Drac_Mazoku Aw, shame. I was about to buy 1001 Spikes on sale, but not if it's got a game breaking bug of that magnitude.
Also, anybody else having trouble finding the Cube Creator demo? It was supposed to come out today.
EDIT: Found it! Took it a while to appear. Strange.
No VC at all for 3DS this week? I know everyone gets tired of seeing the complaints, but I see no reason why DKL couldn't have come out this week.
@andrew20 I doubt it sadly. One, Duck Hunt is coming out next week on the Wii U, and even though it's two different systems they don't seem to release more than one good VC game at a time. Also, we've been like 7 or 8 months behind everyone else with these big VC games, and we haven't reached that mark yet.
@GreatPlayer Excellent choice!
Got Mega Man V for 3DS this week, now I got Mega Man IV
Wasn't Donkey Kong Land rated for 3DS this week? Weird.
Anyway, I'll likely get Mega Man Zero in the near future.
This sucks. Where the hell is the virtual console for the 3DS???
Thanks for putting the Mega Man games on sale Capcom! I will pick them up every time, now I just need X3 and the Zero.
While I don't generally like the idea of Minecraft clones... Considering it's a free demo I'll give it a shot.
@KnightRider666
The Virtual Console is just a disaster this generation, on both systems. I hope I'm not the only person telling Nintendo that in Club Nintendo surveys.
The iOS version of Fairune is fun.
League of Heroes and Meme Run sound fun.
@Whopper744
But they did that with super mario bros. 3.
YAY! Cube Creator demo!
@Mr_Trill281 The Cowboys are a terrible NFL team.
@Mr_Trill281 And you're pretty much spamming comment sections all over this site.
@Quorthon I'm all with you on that one! I've ONLY been complaining about the e-shop on all my surveys and I want to start some kind of petition to get their asses on it. The only problem is that I don't know how to approach petitions and I'm pretty sure nintendo won't listen.
Another thing I'll never forget is how GBA games AREN'T on the 3ds e-shop. I have the ambassador games but I've been itching to play gba games on my 3ds, not my tv screen (that could easily be accomplished with emulators) It's like they designated one person to be in charge of all the e-shop crap.
So I'm not entirely sure if this makes me a bad person, but I really just want to read the review for Meme Run. I know that means someone has to play it, but I expect the review to be hilarious. My sympathies to whoever has to review it though.
@Whopper744
also i had this feeling when Pokemon trading card game back in july i had a feeling that it will come after Pokemon art academy and it did so maybe it will happen again.
Nothing for me this week, I just got into Fantasy Life anyway. I am interested in some stuff, just got to save my money, last month was a killer to my wallet.
I bought 1001 Spikes at release and am still waiting for the patch so that I can play it without fear. So sad since it looks like such a great game...
Looks like I will finish of my Mega Man VC collection.
@chucknorrmis
I understand that they wanted to pad the Wii U Virtual Console, but the GBA wasn't the way to do it. Those games belong on the 3DS, and the Wii U should've been given GameCube, Dreamcast, and Saturn treatment.
In the rare instances that I buy a Virtual Console game, I look forward to the survey questions that ask "what do you think of the Virtual Console service." Without fail, I tell Nintendo that I view it as an utter failure or a missed opportunity at best. No GameCube or Sega partnerships on the Wii U? No GBA or Virtual Boy on the 3DS? An overwhelming number of totally unnecessary NES games, and almost no third party games from any past console.
And what the hell happened to supporting so many classic consoles from the Wii? TurboGrafx-16? Master System? Arcade? Neo-Geo? Commodore-64? It's absolutely ridiculous.
And finally, why the hell haven't the old Wii shops been automatically combined into the Wii U eShop, with the ability to play those games right from the Wii U menu? You know, the exact same way the 3DS operates! It's absolutely mind boggling that they could deliver the 3DS so smoothly where the digital shops are concerned, and screw up the Wii U so badly in the same vein.
Literally, the only problem I have with the 3DS eShop in this vein (I mean, besides not having everything account based like a modern company), is that the DSi games can only be saved and played from the 3DS internal memory for some dumbdonkey reason. It's a little like Sony giving us the Vita, which has a massive and impressive digital store only to follow it with "oh, yeah, the memory cards are all real small and expensive. Have fun."
Eh, what the hell, I'll download MM7 for the 2P mode.
...it does support that versus mode, right?
Metal Gear is actually $19.99
@ricklongo
I think they are going to release Donkey Kong Land on the 3ds vc in US/NA on the 25th I had this same feeling when Pokemon trading card game come out i knew it was going to come out after Pokemon art academy and I was right.Also the wii u is getting Duck Hunt on the 25th
I'll be getting the GB MegaMan games... they're not in the list
This will be megaman week for me as i will be purchasing all the megaman on discount and zero! Fun days ahead of me
@Quorthon i feel your rage but i will say this due to all the hacking going around im kinda glad they don't have connected accounts but other than that i do feel for you!
Wow, now is when Snake Eater 3D is available on the eshop?
Got all 3 Mega Man GB games, League of Heroes and some other shooter game that was for 99 cents.
@BoltedArc
Hacking happens, unfortunately. I don't think it's any excuse for Nintendo not to offer the same kind of customer protection as MS, Sony, or Steam--or Google Play and Apple for that matter.
I hope they aren't doing this as some kind of protection to consumers, because it doesn't make a lot of sense--allowing gamers to get all their games back (say, your device is stolen or broken) simply by reactivating their account is all it should take. Nintendo is the only one that forces you to have to go through an arduous process, including submitting a police report, to get your lost games back.
Think I'll grab megaman 7, steamworld dig (just not sure if I should grab it for wii u or 3ds) ping 1.5 plus is a game ive had my eye on and for $2 the price is right. And I would grab both art of balance & nano assault if these were a little cheaper I'll get 1 or the other.
@Quorthon right but as long as you "Can" get your games back i don't really see the issue. Sony has been hacked along with Microsoft leaking credit card info. Actually not to long ago a guy had his card used to buy a game for a different console and when he went to inquire about it and get his money back , sony gave him the brush off! I think the structure of nintendo's account system is definitely better in terms of security. Is it convenient? No but as long as it protects my wallet and personal information i will take it!
@BoltedArc
Nintendo could also be attacked to take credit card info. That really doesn't have anything to do with the archaic profile system. I don't think Nintendo is necessarily better in terms of security, we just haven't seen them get hacked as much. It doesn't necessarily mean they're better, only that the hackers aren't exactly targeting them.
Indeed, Nintendo was hacked last year: http://kotaku.com/in-japan-nintendo-was-hacked-675798797
That hacking included a theft of personal information, but thankfully no credit card info due to such information not being saved by Club Nintendo. Nintendo's methods aren't necessarily safer--they're just making it harder for customers to recover the software they paid for. No one is immune to hacking these days.
I got Fairune and League Of Heroes. Also downloaded demos of Fractured Soul and the Wii U Art Of Balance to try them out before their sales end. The amount of discounts on 3DS right now is insane.
I really think GBA games are, in general, much better on the big screen. I think it's because so many of those games were made by developers wanting to continue using their skills for SNES style 16-bit games once the 3D consoles were established. Most of those games don't seem to be aware of how small and dark a screen people had to play them on.
So glad Nintendo brought them to Wii U as I've been able to share Metroid Fusion with my kids and now play Minish Cap (which none of us had played).
They still belong on the 3DS as well, but they are suited just fine (better) to console gaming on a TV, IMO.
There is a big hole with the missing GameCube games on the Wii U, but Wind Waker HD and Metroid Prime Trilogy help immensely in that regard as those are my 4 favorite games for the console. The other ones I want all have licensing issues: Star Wars, James Bond. So, that's always going to be a problem.
Hmm may have to check out those Shinen discounts! Very tempting..
Amazing week to say the least:
For sure buying tonight: Blok Drop X Twisted Fusion, Art of Balance WiiU, Cube Creator Demo, Mega Man 2 3 and 4 on GB, and I believe Ping+ is also on sale, going to pick that up.
Games I recommend: Steamworld Dig, Art of Balance 3DS, the WiiU Mega Man games, Nano Assault Neo.
And games I'll probably get in the future but I'm already buying too much tonight: Toss N Go, Fairune and League of Heroes.
And to the currently 34% of you that said “nothing for me this week,” branch out and stop buying just first party titles! There are fun games you are totally missing out on. Try them this week on the cheap!
Man, this week is pretty awesome. Too bad I'm saving my money so I can just pay in full when I pre-order the collector's edition of MH4U. Maybe I can get an eshop card for Christmas.
Some sweet deals. But man, who would've thought a port of Duck Hunt would take so long to release? Maybe next week.
@sleepinglion Nintendo confirmed Duck Hunt is released in North America next week (Christmas Day).
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/12/north_american_release_date_confirmed_for_duck_hunt_on_the_wii_u_virtual_console
Can't wait to get on my troll face in meme run!
Some solid sales this week. My number one pick is 1001 Spikes but the Nano Assault Neo and Mega Man discounts are also tempting.
Just got X4 on PSN, so with Zero and 7, I've pretty much swept the eras of MM in a day. Now Capcom needs Battle Network 2 out here. So incredibly improved on the original.
I tend to avoid 3DS eshop just as I don't play it as much, so I hope the 1001 spikes is on wii u discounted as well.
picking up the Wii U megamans a I have some money ready to spend for the NDD promotion ends. I wonder if ending the sale Monday means we get a big week of Christmas sale for NA next week. I sure hope so!
The Steam Winter Sale just had to start on the same day.I'll be putting off Nintendo eShop purchases until Christmas.
Picked up MM 5,6, and 7. Was going to save my $ in my e-wallet for the future, but I figure I should jump on the sale, since they were 50% its a good savings.
Might consider Nano Assault for Wii- U depending on what the final price is. I downloaded the demo a while back. Weird little game...
@Quorthon
Nintendo's online practices are much safer than Sony's or Microsoft's. The PS3 automatically stores credit card details, as did the 360. Even worse on the 360 was that it was impossible to remove your details unless you owned a PC. The Wii U and 3DS however give you the option to store details or not.
As for how safe your purchases are, well I never lost any Wii or DSi games when I switched to Wii U and 3DS. All of my PS3/360 games are lost in the move to PS4/XBO though, with Sony giving the option to rent games that I already own for as much (or more in some cases) than I paid for them. If Nintendo tried pulling a stunt like that then people would be up in arms, but for some reason give Sony/Microsoft a pass when they do.
yus! cake ninja 3!
Voted for the Art of Balance demo. I'm currently playing through Captain Toad and I am pleasantly surprised.
@Quorthon dude I'm killing Nintendo on the club surveys! Killing em!!
Mega Man 7 for $3.99? That'll do!
It's great that Megaman Zero is readily available, but I have no need for it thanks to the Megaman Zero collection that came out on DS.
@Quorthon based on the article that you posted, that explains how better it is to keep things the way they are! You are caught up in the hype that sony and microsoft have a better account system in place. Yes it's easier for the customer to access but also easier for internet criminals to break into. It may be hard to get your games back if stolen or lost but they have to take it at face value. Nintendo has no way of knowing that you may or may not have lost it also if you bought it digital there is a footprint for them to follow, they know you bought it but again it's a trust issue so yeah you do need to provide proof or file a report otherwise why would they take you seriously! Just because you get it from one or two companies doesn't mean another is behind especially since i hear no problems with nintendo network only issues with sony & microsoft. If it isn't broken don't fix it!
Meme Run should never have been given the opportunity to get published, because by definition, everything on it is stolen. Just like everything Ninja Pig does is big, fat plagiarism. Remember IQ Quiz, which is The Impossible Quiz except you have to pay for it? The developer should be blacklisted.
Just got the stuff in the mega man sale plus zero and a couple of eshop rpgs. I had a bunch DDP money(man I am going to miss that). Next week will be more. As a bonus I got 15 bucks for free on PSN but this weeks holiday sale is arse. Only thing I got was slender man. Kind of a let down after the first couple of weeks.
Steamworld!!!
For those that haven't played MMZ, enjoy, it's a great game (and great series). Nothing for me this week, but that's ok... I hope to finally be playing SSBWiiU by this time next week, so I'm golden.
Where is the Virtual Boy VC in 3DS?
Huh, MGS Snake eater came out on the Australian and New Zealand eshop like 4 months ago. A really good price, too!
@DASchenk
If you can get the DS game that has all Mega Man Zero games in one cart, Mega Man Zero Collection, you can still play it on your 3DS
I know i might be late but for the release of mgs and the theme released on the 3ds this may be of use to someone here ? and the game is only 19$ on the eshop not 30$ like listed here...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Metal-Gear-Solid-3D-Snake-Eater-RARE-Telescope-stylus-and-Case-Never-used-3ds-/111556087277?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19f942cded
@Quorthon But no Game Boy Advance games are being released on 3DS, thats my main issue
Picked up a new copy of Snake Eater in a grocery discount bin a while back for $10. Too bad they're charging so much for a game that has run its course. As for MegaMan Zero, would be nice to see it released on 3DS eShop.
