Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (3DS)

Cost: Free

The DLC for this under-appreciated crossover between Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton adds two types of content: 12 mini-scenarios (with puzzles) and an art gallery with over 60 illustrations, plus development insight. Apparently, you'll have to finish the entire game to access the DLC, though, so this one might be a bit tricky to get in time! Once you have finished the story, the DLC will appear in the menu as "Extra Content".

Rusty's Real Deal Baseball (3DS eShop)

Cost: The game is free, and each minigame costs between $4 and $2, based on your haggling. You can get all of the games for $16 at the very cheapest.

Rusty's Real Deal Baseball is tricky to categorise, because it's technically all DLC, but it's really worth downloading to check out Nintendo's short-lived experimentation with microtransaction haggling. There are minigames in Rusty's Real Deal Baseball that you can buy, and then through playing them, you can earn items to help you lower the prices of the other minigames. Genius.

The full list of games is as follows:

  • Bat Master
  • Make The Call
  • Drop & Pop
  • The Aim Game
  • Bat & Switch
  • Feel The Glove
  • Volley Bats
  • Gear Games

Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns (3DS)

Cost: $8

Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns is one of the best SoS games of the last decade, and its DLC only makes it better — although it's not essential. Here's what it adds to the game:

  • New bachelorette: Stephanie the Contest MC
  • New bachelor: Woofio, the contest judge who wears a dog suit
  • New events and dialogue for Stephanie and Woofio
  • New events
  • New content for festivals
  • New costumes, including ones based on Lest and Frey from Rune Factory 4
  • New dialogue from NPCs
  • The ability to have a child with Inari (the secret marriage candidate)

Note: This DLC is not available outside of North America.

Still got questions that aren't answered in our eShop closure guide? Here's an FAQ for you:

How do I get DLC on the 3DS?

Most games that offer DLC do so in-game. You can usually navigate to the DLC purchase menu from the main menu, before you start the game. It may be labelled "extra content", "downloadable content", "purchase", or something similar.

How do I get DLC on the Wii U?

Similar to Switch, just head to the game page on the store and you should find it there.

You missed out [game]!

Chances are, if there's a game missing, it's probably because you can get it (and the DLC) on Switch. Most of the time, the DLC even comes bundled with the Switch version! This includes:

In every case we can think of, we'd recommend the Switch version over the Wii U version + DLC — especially if you want generally better performance, the ability to play it handheld, and the potential of future patches. In the case of some games, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you'll also get access to the Booster Course packs!
