Topic: What hardware improvements would you like to see on the eventual Nintendo Switch Pro Revision?

Nintendo has released a smaller or larger version of every single handheld they ever made within a couple of years of the original's release. So a Switch Lite or Switch Plus or Pro is not a question of if but a question of when.

Below is my wishlist...

Untitled
1. A Bezel Free Screen that continues to support all existing Joy Cons

Many of this year's high end smartphones offer bezel free displays even though smartphones have much much smaller bezels than the Nintendo Switch.

Large bezels do not offer any advantages for a device like the Nintendo Switch. By eliminating the Switch's bezel, you would increase the screen size from 6.2 Inches to 7.5 Inches and thereby provide improved immersion. Even the 1cm bezels found on the Dell XPS laptop would be a substantial improvement over the current bezel size.

For me, a Switch Plus that does away with the bezel so that it retains the same external dimensions and would support all existing Joy Cons but utilizies a low power 7.5 inch bezel free Samsung OLED or Sharp IGZO displays would be a glorious thing.

2. Eight hours of battery life by shrinking the manufacturing process from 20nm down to 7nm

TSMC recently started accepting volume orders for their upcoming 7nm node for mass production in 2018. https://www.google.com/amp/wccftech.com/tsmc-starts-prototype... Assuming that Nintendo places a volume order in order to release a Switch Revision built on 7nm thereby greatly improving power efficiency, the shrink from 20nm down to 7nm should provide for an additional 4-5 hours of battery life.

The current Switch gets about 3hrs of battery life and uses 20 watts at peak load. A Switch built on the 7nm process should be able to bring that power consumption down to less than 10 watts under peak load. Additional power savings could be achieved by switching to either Sharp's bezel free low power IGZO displays or Samsungs bezel free low power OLED displays.

Some may prefer to use the die shrink to pursue more power. The Tegra X2 is basically a Tegra X1 shrunk to 16nm but with 50% more cores, and updating the internals to the X2 should readily improve the resolution and frame rates closer to the desired 1080p/60fps for most games. With the shrink to 7nm, you can either maximize battery life, maximize power, or do a bit of both. Since I am satisfied by Mario Oddessy's graphics, I would prefer to keep the power the same and maximize battery life to 8 hours with the shrink to 7nm. But if you would prefer a slightly more powerful Switch with 6 hours of battery life, that's fine too.

3. Some modest improvements to the JoyCon controllers, Dock, Kickstand, Storage Capacity and the addition of a Microphone and Camera.

The built in kickstand is almost nonfunctional, it needs to be revised to be sturdier.

The dock should be revised so that it stops scratching up the Switch's screen whenever it's docked. The dock should be wider and should have felt on the inside so that it won't scratch up the screen even if rubs up against it.

If feasible, an updated dock, sold separately, with an integrated fan and a gtx 1060 chip along with gddr5 ram should allow every game to achieve downsampled 1080p 60 fps consistently when docked. If this dock was also compatible with all existing Switch consoles, it would be a dream come true for many gamers. They could potentially do away with the dock aspect altogether and market it as a switch TV, just a box you can put your game carts in that plugs into the TV and supports Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Amazon Video and Plex. No screen, no battery and no joy cons, ideal both as a supplement so that people dont have to keep pulling their Switch out of their entertainment center, and as an alternative for gamers that want a more traditional console experience.

It's downright idiotic that you need to use your phone for Voice Chat during Switch multiplayer games. There is no reason they can't add a microphone to enable proper Voice Chat and possibly even a front facing camera to the Switch Pro. It can't be that expensive, even the DS had a microphone, and playing Face Raiders on 3DS thanks to the built in camera was a blast.

The Switch Pro should have atleast 128GB of on board storage, out of the box. 32GB is nothing more than an insult, especially when they're pushing digital so much. Charge a little more if needed, as long as it's nothing absurd.

The Switch should be compatible with Bluetooth Headphones such as the Airpods and with the Wii U Pro Controller. Both are bluetooth devices and there is no reason they shouldn't be compatible with the Switch.

The JoyCon controllers are overall decent and I think any future revision should retain backwards compatibility with all existing Joy Con Controllers. However, I think there are some minor adjustments that could significantly improve their design and functionality.

The revised Joy Cons should have slightly improved range and more resiliency to wireless interference.

The Joy Cons should have bigger buttons, the current buttons are needlessly small.

Many gamers would prefer analog buttons and triggers for the revised Joy Cons.

In addition, it would be ideal if they utilized something closer to a D-Pad for atleast the left Joy Con (the PS Vita's D-Pad is a perfect compromise between split buttons and D-Pad functionality).

The buttons and joysticks should be slightly further spaced apart and vertically centered so that the Right Joy Con can be used comfortably when sideways. With the current design, the Left Joy Con is far more comfortable to hold and use than the Right Joy Con. Perhaps move the home and capture buttons to the center and space the buttons and joysticks farther apart to achieve this.

The Joycons would benefit from improved triggers so that they can be used even without the Joycon strap being attached. I don't really like the feel of the thin "L" & "R" triggers.

The Joycons should get an improved finish. I don't know what it is about the finish used on the Switch, and it's Joycons, but it soaks up sweat, and grease, no matter what. Washing your hands well seems to make no difference. It's really annoying.

The design and placement of the Home button is ugly, distracting and should be revised in the Switch Pro revision. There is no reason for the home button to have a gray circle encircling it. Ideally, the Home button should be a single black square identical in size and shape to the corresponding Capture button on the left Joy Con but with a home icon printed on it.

The overall design of the Joy Cons would also improve significantly if the Capture and Home buttons were perfectly centered (or atleast horizontally centered) on their respective Joy Cons so that they would line up directly under the Joystick and Down/B Button.

These improvements would make the Nintendo Switch Pro the single greatest handheld ever made in every respect. The only thing holding the Switch back from that title as of now is the poor battery life and the oversized bezel. Nintendo could even brand this revision the Switch Plus and charge more for it, even if the size of the handheld itself isn't any bigger, because the screen size and battery life would be significantly larger.

What improvements would you like to see in the eventual Switch revision?

Please share the above ideas on any forums you frequent. The more publicity these ideas get, the greater likelihood they have of eventually becoming a reality. To this end, I encourage you to copy paste this entire thread directly and without attribution over to any site you browse.

I think the bezel is kinda necessary for people without screen protectors. The dock always scratches that area.

For now i want a new dock with better aircirculation. I fear the toaster design is not random. I dont think ill wait for a revision. As soon as there will be good alternatives i will buy one.

I would like to see the dock updated with an ethernet port to replace the USB 3.0 port. Although we technically don't have to wait on a Switch revision for that since they sell the dock separately anyway. I really hope they considering doing this in the future.

As far as the Switch itself, most of things I would have suggested have already been mentioned.

I really hope that there is no Pro version of the Switch like with the Ps4 and the XboxOne.
Nintendo should just focus on the games.

if the 3DS is any indication of their way of planning, we should probably bet on larger screens, more RAM, etc. Thing that won't cost a lot in the long run.
It probably would be bad business to upgrade key (i.e. costly) elements of the hardware when all you want, down the line, is to sell more units. And to sell more units you need to keep the unit cheap via cutting down the costs.

And I completely disagree for the addition of a D-pad on the left joy-con, as it would create compatibility problems on some single joy-cons games. I still don't get why the d-pad on the pro controller isn't the usual quality though.

Nintendo Switch neds these improvements :
1. Redesign the Dock appearance. Make it smaller, cheaper, useful.
2. More color variation for Switch tablet. Just because Switch targeted mainly for Young Adults it doesn't mean they always like Black color. Even some adult gamers prefer colorful Switch instead Black.
3. Longer battery life.
4. Larger Internal Memory ( At least 128 GB)
5. Longer duration of video capturing ( at least 1 minutes like Instagram)
6. Official Switch Shell replacement from Nintendo. Not satisfied with Black color ? Buy the replacement from Nintendo with cheaper price and more color variation, including Joy Cons shell.
7. Bezel Free. Larger screen is better.
8. Easy to replace Internal Battery.
9. 1080p docked , so no more "pixelate" on big TV
10. Two plugs for charging the Switch, one on the Top and on the Bottom (Like Wii U Gamepad)
11. Louder sound
12. Youtube, Google / Yahoo, Netflix by Default.
13. Camera like 3DS to read QR Code.
14. Specific bundles with Real Physical games inside, Not A Code.
15. Sturdier standing.

Outside of some standard hardware and quality of life improvements to the system itself I'd like them to include a 500/1000GB HDD inside the dock. There is plenty of space in that thing, more than enough room for a HDD.

I know some people will argue that it'd be pointless to have the HDD locked to the TV and that they should just increase the SSD. I disagree, mainly due to SSD memory being a lot more expensive. I would personally prefer to pay a bit more for an extra 500/1000GB (even though its locked to the dock) than an extra 98GB of internal SSD memory. As much as we all wish devs would optimise their games to lower memory consumption, they most likely won't, and an extra 98GB of internal memory won't get you very far in that case. A 500/1000GB HDD in the dock, however, would help a LOT.

Doesn't help when I want to play in portable mode though. HDD in the dock just sounds like causing all kinds of problems for people.

I would like to be able to play 3ds, wii and wii U games on the Switch, so: a processor that allows emulation of recent Nintendo hardware. Also: longer battery life, replaceable battery, perhaps more powerful GPU that can increase drawing distance, resolution or FPS on current games. I would like joycon to have a slider that makes them player one, two, three, etc, instead of going into the menu.
I would like to have wireless charging in the joycon, so the grips do not need to come off to charge. I would like a headset connector on the pro controller (I dislike wireless, because I have more than enough gizmos to charge already). Perhaps built in 4G for all those online only games. Naturally about 128G storage. It is expected. Larger screen, but I agree with previous posters: keep overall size and joy con compatibility; just thinner bezels.
Perhaps the joy con could get little indicators that help with which button is which, because of orientation, paired or solo. It gets confusing. The could just be colors, or full blown micro oled displays with letters.

I like the idea of an improved dock to up performance. I see no reason why the Wii U Pro controller shouldn’t work now. It has all the same buttons.

@okeribok
Okay, about emulation of 3DS / Wii / Wii U for Switch, how do i play Wii U / Wii games with Disc inside of Switch ?
PSP much ? UMD style ?

A time dilation device - you press the special "time dilation button" (ideally I'd place this next to the capture button) and the Switch Pro creates a time bubble around you allowing you to play hours of gameplay while mere seconds pass outside of the bubble.

I think this is pretty much the single biggest feature lacking from the Switch as it stands.

@StuTwo IKR? I still don't get how Nintendo thought they could rush this thing to market without including things like a time dilator. It's 2017, people. Also obviously lacking BC with all previous Nintendo consoles and Keurig-compatable coffee dispensing button, auto-dog-walker and homework finisher.

It's also clearly outrageous that we have to pay extra for accessories that give you basic functionality like the TV if you want to play on TV, not to mention that you can't play the Switch without electricity so you're gonna need to pay for that, which brings the REAL cost of the Switch to at least, oh I don't know, let's say $900. Why do you hate your fans so much, Nintendo?

My Switch has that button, but it seems to work the other way around...

Sure if they price them at $900 like those high end smartphones you might get some of the things you want

Thats the thing though. Neither does an extra 98GB in the long run.

As things are right now, most games with patches are playable without those patches anyway. For example, DOOM will have the multiplayer as a download, but the singleplayer is on the cartridge. So that would imply you could have the multiplayer as a download on the Dock's HDD and the singleplayer on the Switch internal memory. Which makes sense since you'll most likely play multiplayer when you're home and have a stable connection.

Not to mention there are plenty of options for those who really want a fully portable experience. All kinds of SD cards are available.

Having a 500/1000GB HDD at home would be much appreciated, for me at least. I would personally just pick and choose which games I want to bring with me on the go and have those on the internal memory. For example, Splatoon 2 is a game I exclusively play at home since it uses gyro, so I would have that game on the HDD. BotW, on the other hand, is game I love having portable, so I would have that on the internal memory.

I think the whole idea of a HDD in the dock fits well with the whole 'hybrid console' mindset.

@Octane Yes but it is kind of let down to buy a console and then the ''new'' switch comes out and you regret it. You have to do things like resell it or something like that OR by the ''new'' switch and have 2.

I get it will improve the experience for the new people but that is not the case for the rest of us.

And this is coming from a guy that has 3DS XL, ''new'' 3DS XL and ''new'' 2DS XL (that was a buy just for the collecting and it was for just 90$).
