Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is obviously a bigger game than the original Wii U title, so what's the file size like?
The official Nintendo game page has revealed you'll need 2.9 GB of free space on your system to install it. Again, the Switch release includes the addition of the Bowser's Fury add-on, and there's now also online play and amiibo compatibility. The original Wii U game, in case you were wondering, was 1.7 GB in size.
Although we got a new trailer this week, Nintendo hasn't mentioned exactly how long Bowser's Fury is - other than the fact it's a "short but action-packed standalone adventure". Fingers crossed it's more than a few hours and is enough to justify buying the game a second time around if you've already played it before.
Will you be picking up Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury in digital or physical form? Leave a comment down below.

Physical as always.
Let's get physical, physical ! 🤟
I played this game on Wii U a few weeks ago so I won’t get this. I wish they released just Bowser’s Firy as like a $30 game or something.
Any guesses how long Bowser’s Fury will add to the game? I’m hoping it’s more than just a 2-3 hours.
Plebeians: We demand several hours of additional gameplay!
Titans: If I can't march straight to Bowser's castle and take him on a la Calamity Ganon, then the pre-order's off!
The file size has to be that much larger to accommodate Fury Bowser’s massive **** ******** in Mario’s ******************
I have about 119gb left on my Switch, so I should be fine 😂
Played my fill of 3D World back on the Wii U so I'll hold back now, despite how nice Fury looks so far.
The simple fact alone that one of the best 3D Mario games of all time is getting rereleased on the Switch with online and additional content makes this worth a purchase. I’m sure Bowser’s Fury will be fun regardless.
The game looks faster and crisper, and I’d venture to guess that they’ll have another character or two after Rosalina. I highly doubt all cards have been revealed for this hand yet.
Wow that is tiny! Nintendo have always been extremely efficient coders.
I checked yesterday and it said 5GB, then today it says 2.8GB. Still a good size though, especially for the amount of content.
Nintendo only seems to be an industry leader in compression, but at least that's something. They aren't winning any other technical race
@Whalehome I'm guessing between 20-30 minutes.
I keep getting games physical and regretting it. So I suppose digital.
@Zach777 interesting you consider this one of the greatest 3D Mario games- I like that. Do you mean when played in single player or multiplayer? I always pegged this game as much better in multiplayer..
Its mine i tells you..... MINEEEE.... i must have this
@Kimyonaakuma I don’t think they’re trying to. They recognise that great software trumps all else.
to everyone getting physical, you might miss the #2 pin set. depending on when it goes live and the speed of shipping the game.
@TheLightSpirit A 50% increase in file size when most Wii U ports are smaller than the original is notable at least.
Super Mario 3d world/Bowsers fury steel book when ordering from Nintendo UK
I am now getting this game day 1. Who says Nintendo are falling behind the others cause i don't with games like this. All PS5 games are on PS4 apart from some like Demon souls which is a remake of a PS3 game. Not sure what other companys have in store to compete agains't this by Feb but its going to have to be good.
@andykara2003
I guess that depends on you.
For me sometimes I enjoy playing by myself because it is not as chaotic or random and I can focus on just completing every objective. (Gold flag, collectible stamp, bonus exit, etc.)
Sometimes I do enjoy playing with others for the social aspect and fun that the chaos does bring.
But you see it offers both, so wether you do or wether you don’t like multiplayer you still have options.
@andykara2003 very true, I'd rather have great gameplay over anything else.
When I get Super Mario 3D World, it will definitely be physical for Switch. I have the Wii U version digitally from when I was snowed in on a Mario Day years ago and wanted a new Mario game to play.
This is shocking for how great the game’s graphics look and the ability to switch online play on for the entire base game
I thought Mario 3D World was a big-ish game. 2.9 GB is small, and has me nervous.
Edit: Nevermind, just saw the overview trailer and that confirmed that you can create rooms for friends and 2 players can play locally while playing online. I was worried they wouldn't explain those details since there wasn't a direct scheduled.
Original: Maybe a dumb question, but has Nintendo confirmed details of the online multiplayer? Like, can you actually just team up with your friends? Can you have 2 people per console? I just keep getting excited when some of their more recent games advertise online multiplayer only to have strange restrictions. Like how you couldn't play two players per system in Smash or basically anything about how Mario Party's multiplayer turned out. Don't get me wrong, love me some Nintendo and I enjoyed this game the first time around.
I'll definitely be picking up a few physical copies on day 1. Even though most of my Switch games are 95% physical. I had to upgrade to a few 1TB micro sd cards and only have 425GB available.
Considering Nintendo are masters at getting massive games into small files sizes, I’m somewhat surprised at how much larger the file size actually is.
@WoomyNNYes don’t be nervous.
Nintendo are absolute freaks at cramming huge games into tiny file sizes.
No, really. For example, donkey Kong tropical freeze takes almost half the space of its wii u version, despite having more content.
(Not much, admittedly, but still, it was more)
But, I do see your point, it is unusually small, but I think that comes to its level design layout and graphical design.
With most of the game having a mostly fixed camera, it doesn’t have to have as much detail as a game with full camera control.
No need to model anything behind Mario.
@1UP_MARIO that’s a cool steel book. I got one with luigis mansion 3...
@Whalehome however long a odyssey kingdom takes, the one with the giant glass, maybe a little bit more
@Anti-Matter Mario games I rather have download versions. Makes it easier to jump in without having to switch the cartridge.
@Alpha008 Indeed, Nintendo are the masters of game compression (always have been). Also there are no fully rendered video's or voice acting in the game. Which really reduces the file size.
@sanderev
I prefer switching cartridges to play other games. It's a fun activity for me.
I'm dinosaur and games collector, still have attachment with physical things.
@Anti-Matter True to that, but not when I'm on the road. I usually take one cartridge (in the system) and play that or whatever I have downloaded
Mario is my friend
@bones exactly! This in February and Monster Hunter Rise the month after. The PS5 and Xbox have nothing anywhere near these on the horizon.
"Bigger than ever"
First thought; 6GB+ ???
"2.9 GB"
Oh, no biggie
How can such a beautiful game come in at just 2.9GB? Not that my SD card is arguing! 😂
Over 1GB more data, perhaps Bowser's fury is bigger than we thought.
@1UP_MARIO,
That's very nice indeed, I was going to pass on this, but after seeing the fury footage it's a must buy, day one for me.
@Alpha008,
Don't forget Nintendo's awesome data compression, this is born from working with limited spaced media.
2.9 Gigs isn't too bad. Bowser's Fury makes this a must buy, day 1 for me.
Physical. Both games look fun + I never played 3D world on wii u
@johnvboy it’s a must buy for everyone who loves platforming games. Great multiplayer fun plus the bonus of bowsers fury
@Alpha008 Yeah, I guess I totally forgot how small Nintendo game file sizes can be. Thanks!
how much additional hours content will the Bowser's Fury have ?
if not lot i am playing it on my wiiu xd
@Galaxy why do you regret it?
I'd still consider 3 gb small. Large to me is 20gb+ like NBA 2K and Mortal Kombat 11 lol.
@presenttense I hate having to change the cartridge. I know it sounds lazy, but it makes me play things alot less if I have to change it.
@Galaxy I totally understand! It appears if you pre-order the game digitally on the Nintendo UK store you still get sent the steelbook and stickers 😀
If i do (and it is still an if at this point) it will be physical
I plan on getting the physical version. I hope that this Bowser's Fury DLC is long and cool. It seems from the trailer that it's a mini open world experience where you can explore the island freely and find the Cat Coins. It is interesting...
