Nintendo has shared a brand new trailer for the upcoming Paper Mario: The Origami King, set to launch on Switch next month. It gives us a closer look at some of the characters and exciting discoveries we'll come across when we get stuck in for ourselves.
It's a little lengthier than your average trailer at almost six minutes, but you'll want to watch it in its entirety if you're thinking about picking up the game. We've also got more detailed info for you below regarding both the game's characters, and it's all-important combat. Check it out:
Characters
King Olly has moved Peach’s Castle in his devious plot to fold the world! Luckily, Mario’s ability to wield mighty paper techniques will put a crinkle in those plans. Mario’s journey to untie the massive streamers binding the castle will lead him through vast regions full of surprises. He’ll visit underground sewers, raging rapids, an ancient ruin, a ninja-filled mansion and a lively desert oasis that will quench anyone’s thirst for excitement.
A cast of off-the-wall characters adds an extra dimension to the expedition, too. There’s a Bob-omb who’s lost his memory, the Toad professor of ancient history, and Kamek, the Magikoopa who’s always got something up his sleeve. Mario will find assistance along the way from friends like Olivia, the good-natured sister of King Olly, and even Bowser himself. Some of these unlikely allies might help out in a battle when needed!
Combat
Paper Mario: The Origami King delivers new ring-based battles that require strategy and quick thinking to line up enemies and execute well-timed attacks to maximize damage. It’ll take a sharp mind to determine when to stomp enemies with Mario’s boots, when to whack ‘em with a hammer and when to strategically use items to heal or attack.
An audience of cheering Toads are ready to pitch in with a variety of helpful battle aids, just in case Mario starts to fold under pressure. Mario will also face some of his most intimidating foes in showdowns against the Legion of Stationery, bosses themed around stationery like colored pencils, sticky tape and rubber bands. These enemies may look innocent, but take note: They can really supply a challenge, so be sure to take care of business!
When Mario’s not duking it out in the ring, he can investigate suspicious spots to uncover hidden items, toss confetti to repair holes in the landscape, discover loads of Toads hiding in the scenery, play mini-games to earn in-game rewards, and revel in an abundance of secrets and treasures.
The game launches on 17th July. If you haven't already ordered your copy, you can do so right here.

Very excited, cant wait!
Very cool.
Seems like a decent midway point between the newer and older PM games, design-wise. It has unique characters, seems more story based, and looks to not have a battle system fueled by cards/stickers/whatnot, but it's also pretty clearly not an RPG. Partner characters also seem to be a compromise, in this regard; they have unique names and personalities and can participate in battle, but it doesn't seem like you're collecting a party.
I'll take it. The game looks fun and gorgeous.
K I'm on board now
What's an adventure without companions to share it with.
Good question Nintendo
Outside of these Origami characters, it would've been nice to seem them go back to designing unique enemies/partners that aren't just ripped straight from basic Mario designs. Oh well. It still looks pretty fun. I'm excited.
I'm feeling quite a bit more hopeful after seeing this trailer! Sure, it's not a complete return to form (but luckily we have Bug Fables for that), but I think this looks a lot more promising than the drivel we've been given recently.
I dunno, I really don’t like the look of the combat. I’m also not a big fan of when they go for paper-related enemies like this whole stationary thing, TTYD was incredibly imaginative with using the paper concept effectively while not delving into weird real-life stuff.
Neat. Battles look interesting..I'm glad they try to switch it up every entry. Looking forward to release.
Never thought tape could be so menacing. As usual I'm a fan of the lighthearted humor and the gorgeous art direction.
Really excited for that game, looks like a lots of fun (just like the others)
This game looks actually REALLY good. I haven't been hyped for a Paper Mario game in a long time. The battle system looks fun as well.
Ok, I care more now. But i'm still concerned that without exp, or some actual battle reward other than 'coins', then battling will become unnecessary and pointless like previous titles.
The lack of motivation for battling is the only thing that caused me to put down Color Splash back on the Wii U
They made the right call developing this game instead of porting Color Splash.
So many half-steps here, like the companions being generic as @$!?. Hope it's better than it appears and not just "seemed fine on paper."
This looks absolutely perfect. Cannot wait!
It appears this will be a sort of puzzle/action hybrid battle mechanic. Those can be a lot of fun when well executed. I just hope combat is incentivized. The last PM's actually rewarded players for ignoring enemies (which goes against gaming ethos).
@Tandy255 I TOTALLY agree. Color Splash was cute/funny but had significant combat flaws and some STUNNINGLY unintuitive design elements. Better to start fresh.
Looks brilliant. I know I will love it. I liked colour splash.
I can't wait, this will likely be my game of the year!!!
@Tandy255 in due time! As a WiiU owner, it is a little upsetting to see all the ports when I supported the system. But it made business sense- essentially expanded library and then of course increased revenue.
As for this title, I am not immediately excited about it. But then again, I was not excited about Clubhouse games either and I ended up preordering a few days before launch. Even tho I liked Color Splash and the series has its moments, this isn't a franchise that excites me much
@Archius9 in my eyes i'm a bit of mixed minds about this. If coins ends up being very useful to the quest, especially suince items are making a return to form, anne's you have to decide whether to use coins for more permanent upgrades or more limited uses boosts and items abilities... there could be ways XP could be 'missing' and still not make the player -feel- like they're missing on.
Especially as if you think about it... Mario might have been tied to regular leveling in older games but in comparison his companions never were in older games and were exclusively upgraded through shine sprites you had to find in hidden areas.
Honestly i'm tentatively curious about this one. Ditto about how companions will exactly function. It sounds like they might either be something you "call" upon or something like "episodic" followers tied to specific areas and locations of the story.
What i'm more uncertain about are the "Stationery" bosses but looking at snippets of the video(especially the larger paper craft enemies such as giant goombas/etc) it sounds like they're not the -only- boss styles enemies we'll face at least.
Either ways, this could end up a prelude to something of a closer return to form of the franchise and this(especially since the regular battles seem the closest to classic Paper Mario in over a decade+) receiving a good reception might well end up justifying a remaster of Thousand Years Door or something of the like later.
"discover loads of Toads hiding in the scenery"
-Sir, the gamers don't like the abundance of toads in recent Paper Mario games!
-Ok, we'll hide them!
Colored pencils and tape being bosses is a bit...uninspired, but at least the writing seems on-point. Everything else looked great.
Looks beautiful. However, I can't help but feel like this is just a Mario adventure game for the sake of having one. In fairness, I guess everything in entertainment is for the sake of having it. Oh well, I'll see how it reviews, it does look fun. Not a return to the first 2 games, but still fun.
Edit: I watched that trailer again (beginning to end). I'm fanboying like crazy. This game actually looks really good. I'm officially hyped.
I feel more sold on it now. A puzzle style combat system is hopeful. I was not digging the way Color Splash and Sticker Star was done for combat. I enjoyed the latter but not much the former. And companions are always a welcome.
@westman98 I actually think it's pretty funny. Like, "Look out for the dastardly despot of this realm, the ruthless ruler—Colored Pencils!" I don't know why, but it gave me a hearty chuckle.
Nah... I think I skip this one as well. It still isn't the Paper Mario I want.
I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm concerned that finding the toads will require just whacking everything to see if it changes or not. I really hope that we get some good origami bosses not just the pencils and tape.
More serious take: I'm absolutely more worried about this game now. No mention of any sort of EXP or rewards for battling, but it looks to me like confetti is going to be your reward. So basically paint again - winning battles helps you get a resource to fill in holes to explore places.
Finding hidden toads is at least a bit clever, it makes use of the fact that they all look the same to disguise them as other objects.
The battle system looks cool, but I'm still worried it'll be pointless as mentioned above.
The boss battles look like straight trash lmao. I'm not against them leaning into the paper aspect, but 2/3 of the bosses are literally just pencils and tape. The rubber band golem at least had some effort put into it but molding them into a human shaped form isn't exactly an inspired design either.
Partners seem limited-use, although again it's not explained how.
HP and damage numbers seem really high for Paper Mario. Part of the fun was always how simple and low everything was. But here we see Mario with like 100 HP, and partners dealing 20 damage.
I was cautiously optimistic after the first trailer but this is killing it for me. There's still enough unknowns that it could turn around by announcing they were hiding classic features. I admit I'm trying to infer some stuff that's not explicitly said. But my guesses are literally just "It looks like the same systems as last game" so really it'd be up to these trailers to disprove that, rather than me just assuming they fixed design problems from the past 2 games.
Sony: Finally, we have the upper hand, we have a new console! Bwahahaha!
Nintendo: Show them... The partners
A 5:43 trailer makes me think this was supposed to be part of an E3 Nintendo Direct. I wonder if we'll get similar length trailers for their other games.
Oh wait, right, after Paper Mario Switch HAS no other games. Better get on that Nintnedo.
Man, this drip feed of Animal Crossing, S&S DLC, now Paper Mario really makes we wish we had a Direct for fall and holiday games.
I like it. The scenery, companions, mechanics, etc all look really great. My only gripe is the generic looking bosses. I get what they're going for given the Origami/Crafting theme but it does not look cool at all.
Hopefully we see more Origami themed bosses alongside some more traditional paper bosses.
Love it!
I like it when games switch it up a bit. No need for it to be like the original or the WiiU version. Day 1 for me.
@PapaPedro
Most RPGs: "Attack and dethrone god"
Paper Mario: "Attack and dethrone tape"
@nessisonett I agree completely
Additionally, I'm sick of the paper based jokes. Until Super Paper Mario, the "paper" Mario was mostly a medium of telling a story, with the exception being those overworld power in TTYD. Now, the latest games are like "lol, we are so paper cut-outs. Look at me fold like paper because I'm paper". The real world 3D stuff doesn't help in the least.
That said, the scenery is just gorgeous. Between that and the generic semi-party, I'm still on the fence whether I'm going to skip this one again.
I wish they would go away from making everything about paper. Yes I know that the art style is paper, but they keep focusing the story on it.
@BLD Paper Mario was never good because of its battle system lol. It was always about the story.
@rjejr I agree. The only explanation I can think of for not having directs lately is lack of games to show. I’m not sure why games like windwaker hd and twilight princess aren’t released during these gaps.
Thanks! This trailer saved me $60! Now hopefully Nintendo will reveal a Super Mario All-stars 2 I can use it for instead.
@-Juice-
A lot of people, myself included, would strongly disagree. And that doesn't excuse making the battle system completely pointless anyway. It's looking like 3 games in a row with no exp system, no actual incentive to use the battle system.
Companions being used in battle is a huge step in the right direction. But it's all for naught if the battles still don't provide any meaningful progression other than buying coins for more moves. This trailer actually makes the consumable moves less clear, are ANY moves permanent? We assumed the normal boots and hammer were but they're not in all the menu scenes here, and when they are it's the same menu as the special moves. And we know nothing about any form of exp. I'm guessing the bag has an expandable limit on confetti, so do we craft moves?
I'm still worried this game will just be a walk through a paper diorama, and while the battle system looks fun there will still be no point.
@TJWorks twelve colored pencils hasn’t been in a mario game before?
No, but I get what you mean.
It looks like they've gotten about halfway through fan-requests and then returned to their own development.
@dSpect
Attacks arent consumable but have limited durability.
Basic hammer and boots are infinite use though.
This looks dope. People are calling fighting a box of colored pencils "generic"... Can you name some other games that have you fighting stationary? There might be a couple. But I'd posit that these battles are as unique as they can get. Paper Mario fans just be toxic these days
@BeefSanta
"Can you name some other games that have you fighting stationary"
Paper Mario.
But nah fam go off about how TAPE is a genius character design for a boss.
I was interested before but now I'm not. Oh well, maybe Nintendo's next game will be something I want to buy.
Wow, this game looks gorgeus and really fun, the environments are so diverse and full of secrets, there seems to be a lot of exploration and variety of situations.
If only the battle system was more NORMAL... Why do they have to make so much weird stuff?? If something works, let it be! Why not coming back to the TYD style everyone loves, and try something new from there? And what about the EXP, is it back or not? I´m not going to talk about those bosses because... well, what can I say? LOL. But the way you fight them is so strange too...
In other words: the game itself: GREAT. The battle system in general: WEIRD. I don´t know, I better wait for the reviews and the people´s opinion with this one. I want to have hope, but I can´t...
@westman98 It seems they just may not have been equipped going by screens from the UK page. https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch/Paper-Mario-The-Origami-King-1782440.html?red_source=papermario.nintendo.co.uk#Gameplay
There's even an "accessories" section that has badge effects! Still worried about progression but that page explains everything way better than any video about this game.
I miss the Glitz Pit..
@Seananigans I too would be disappointed it it were yarn.... But it's rubber band! That's a whole lot better!
This definitely isn't a return to form, but it IS a few steps closer to that.
Haha, the bosses look insane! This will be sweet!
@rjejr Nintendo could've announced its full lineup for the year and you'd still have something to complain about. Maybe Pushsquare is more your speed.
@Blooper987 well technically you've had companions in all the Paper Marios
@alex and any one else who is still crying about the partner battle system. on youtube NINTENDO HQ soeed alot of footage from japanese version. in the battle ring Ollie's sister transforms into gigantac turtle and performs awesome attack.
the partners play a role in battle. you people complain about mario being same old same old, like NSMBU DELUXE. but when a new style comes for paper mario? you cry, why isn't like 1000 year door? So which is it? something new or the same old. sorry alex, yiu cannot have itboth ways. watch the japanese footage. it is amazing.
I'm not sure still. The battle mechanics look good, but there seems like there is a mismatch between what they said and what was shown regarding partners though. "Partners can be used in battle" but 99% of the battles they show have a notably absent partner. Also Mario is alone most of the time on the overworld, are partners permanent? I'm concerned that partners are going to be like "you get this partner for this chapter and this chapter only" kind of thing. Also the partners shown look bland af.
@EVERY ONE. WATCH THE JAPANESE FOOTAGE. you can use partners at any time. if you want 1000 year door. go buy a game cube and play 1000 year door. THIS IS A DIFFERENT GAME. thank you.
Where's the Experience points? That's the big thing that matters to me
Looks to me like rather than EXP and leveling up raising your stats in a traditional way, you're gaining better accessories and weapons as the game goes on to raise your stats. One of the images shows an accessory called the Heart Plus which "raises your HP during battle".

Nintendo, can we please get a Mario game where we aren't followed around and harassed by something that continually chatters with dialogue pop ups?
Easy pass!
@michellelynn0976 But I don't want this game. I'm just sitting in a corner, curled up in the fetal position after Sony revealed Demon's Souls is getting a remaster, so...
@HammerKirby I believe those are in Final Fantasy, now.
Looks so damn fun! 😍
@the_beaver I think it’s bloody brilliant you can also slide the enemies; it really is like solving a short puzzle— a rubiks-cubish timed trial— before the main show begins. It’s Nintendo’s quirky design excellence through and through. People are also forgetting that it’s mostly optional— you don’t have to play the minigame before attacking, I do believe.
I can overlook a weirdo battle system if the story's decent again. And that looks to be the case.
A must for me.
No its not like the original pm but I dont care it seems so fun to me, I want this so freaking bad.
Really liking whats shown so far. Bosses based off stuff like tape and colored pencils? I love it.😁
@DenDen Yeah I’m sold. Day one
What fans say: We love Paper Mario!
What fans mean: We love one 16 year old game, but don't really like any other Paper Mario much.
Let's just fix it for real: "Legend of the Seven Stars or go home. No Geno no buy! "
When I first saw the new battle system I thought it was terrible, but when anything is explained it is very interesting
This looks great to me and I loved the Thousand Year Door. Its coming around my birthday, so I am excited.
CANNOT EVEN EXPRESS HOW EXCITED I AM FOR THIS GAME!!!
In all sincerity, especially after this video addressed my last concerns re: the battle system, this is probably the Switch game that has excited me most since Breath of the Wild. Finally a proper successor to The Thousand Year Door (one of the greatest games of all time, IMHO).
@NEStalgia Not really XD, we love Mario RPG, Paper Mario 1 and Paper Mario TTYD. Three Mario RPG games, half of the entire saga (and TTYD is the best of them, that´s why we say we love Paper Mario). It used to be awesome, but alas, it changed SO much it stopped being Paper Mario. It lost its spirit (until now, I have high hopes with this one).
But just because the last three entries were "bad", or just not really good, it doesn´t mean we don´t love the series, because we still love the other half of the saga.
It´s like Resident Evil, I will always say I love it, but in fact, I love 1, 2, 3, Code Veronica and 4, half of it XD, the first half, because 5, 6, Revelations 1&2, and 7 (well, this one is good, but it´s very different) are not my cup of tea. Same as with Paper Mario: it lost its spirit, what made it outstanding.
@TG16_IS_BAE I was not into Demon Souls myself.
@michellelynn0976 BLASPHEMY
But, I forgive you lol
@NEStalgia Legend of Seven Stars and Earthbound need the Link's Awakening treatment, now THAT would be something.
Yeah I'll definitely grab this one, looks fantastic
im pretty sold on this game, it seems like a half step between traditional and modern PM. now im just hoping the new ring-based battle are rewarding enough to play, from the looks of it EXP seems to be gone still
@KingBowser86 It kinda seems like that's exactly it...
It looks like some of the charm and writing that I enjoy in the Paper Mario series has carried over, so no complaints there. I'm definitely still interested. Not sure if I'm sold on combat just yet, though.
@RareFan yeah I’m trying not to be negative about it but it just doesn’t feel like they really got what made Paper Mario so great before, or at least they’re not being allowed too.
Feels like the focus is on the fact it’s a paper world, which really was kind of secondary in the first two. At this point I don’t even much care about the mechanics I just miss the unique world it used to be. I don’t think they’ll ever go back to it though, they seem too entrenched in this being what Paper Mario is now.
Okay, I'm sold. It's not a traditional RPG, but it does look fun to play and explore. That's good enough for me.
@nessisonett
I feel exactly the same. From the moment they added real-life "Things" in Sticker Star (and again in Color Splash), I cringed. It's just so goofy and gimmicky and breaks the 4th wall way too heavily. I'm not in love with the idea of things like that being actual bosses. I'm sure it'll be "clever" in their execution, but still just out of place.
That said, it otherwise does look like this game is at least a step in the right direction. I'll likely get it. Hopefully someday they can get back closer to the formula that once made these games so great.
Holy cow, this is exciting! Those exciting new moments and the fact you can use bosses as weapons this is shortly reminding me of the battles in the 3DS Mario & Luigi games which require a lot of timing. There are also many BotW vibes around here, like breakable weapons (Fire Emblem also comes to mind), the Toad Tower beam, "chopping" down a tree, etc. This game is seriously coming up exciting, I just hope that's not everything the game has to offer, since overview trailers really love to show many later portions of a game.
Logic: Olly was angry the Toads looked the same, he folded them into random Origami species.
was it my imagination or did i see paper Tanooki/Raccoon Mario? it is one of my favorite power-ups.
Bring back the pig game!
How about a paper mario RPG... I bet people would like that especially when the studio making the Mario and Luigi rpgs has closed.
I might have to wait until the game is out to learn about the game's mechanics in detail. I don't know why I would battle common enemies, since there appears to be no EXP system. If there is a point to battle, Nintendo has not shown that detail yet.
Without exp lvl system battles and character growth i feel it will be no better than colour splash and sticker star. There was absolutely 0 point in engaging in battle in those games as there was no growth rewardIt was easier to just try and avoid combat all together. I just dont get Nintendo sometimes. All fans of the series have been saying is a return to form but N being N dont listen to the fan base. I mean, why would they 🙄
Sadly, the only PM game I've played is Sticker Star and that game was not fun at all. Eventually sold my copy.
This one looks more exciting! The battle system looks more fun that the one in SS.
Antagonist in the latest Mario Bros and Yoshi games, now a playable character in Paper Mario, can we now finally have Kamek in Smash?
Those bosses alone are enough to make me pass on the game.
The stationary boss battles look extremely lame.
A huge disappointment.
The bosses looks really dull and lazy. It feels like Nintendo is forcing this whole paper-idea.
I feel like the current Paper Mario team does not understand what made the previous 2 games so much fun the paper was a mere story telling tool not the whole game itself, and with head dev constantly fawning for Miyamoto's outdated ideas I dont think we'll get another TYYD in a long time still the partners are a nice addition and that Bomb-omb is my mood.
The narrator's voice is really annoying.
@NEStalgia The first one was good and I liked super paper Mario. It's was the other two that just were kinda Meh to bad.
@Thwomp_Stomper "games like windwaker hd and twilight princess"
And all of the Mario ports that have been leaked and rumoured so much they're practically official, only Nintneod hasn't said anything yet. And of course Pikmin 4.
I'm sure they blame their inability to make a Direct on Covid-19 distancing but I have to say, I've watched the 3 "from home" episodes of SNL and yeah, 1 was basically just a Zoom meeting but by the last 1 you could hardly even tell they were at home, they had the editing and special effects running almost like normal. So I guess Nintneod is just waiting and biding their time. It's working on me, I've purchased 3 different Labo kits.
@IronMan30 Apparently I need to be here to give you something to complain about. Oh wait, no even if I weren't' here I'm sure you'd still find something else to complain about.
Gotta hand it to the people complaining about the people complaining like they don't even realize they themselves are complaining. Must be great to be that oblivious. 🤣
It seems each color of paper that wraps around peaches castle is a color you must follow, each one leads to a boss and when you beat that boss a peice of the color paper covering the castle removes itself, and when all are gone the castle is free of course and then you fight the last boss
Too many gimmicks? You know what we want, just give us what we want. #ttyd (Prices are closing in at a hundred bucks for an original GC copy, yikes!)
@TG16_IS_BAE Thanks. Lol
