We can't quite believe that it's already September, but boy do we have a cracking month ahead of us.
As you'll probably be aware, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is heading to Switch, alongside other intriguing titles like DAEMON X MACHINA, Untitled Goose Game, and even Mario Kart Tour on mobile amongst plenty more, but it doesn't stop there. Yes, this month sees the big launch of Nintendo Switch Lite.
Nintendo's newest piece of gaming hardware arrives on 20th September, and we can't wait to truly check it out for ourselves. Until then, though, we do have this fancy new trailer from Nintendo UK which shows off the new console in style. If you're still on the fence about picking one up, why not give it a watch and see if it sells it to you?
Are you thinking of buying the new Switch Lite? Does its portable-only nature suit your playstyle? Tell us below.

I’d love to get one as I mainly play handheld more than tv mode. I may sell my switch and get one of these one day
Yep, I spend most of my time on handheld mode, so a lighter more portable option is perfect for me. I can leave my main switch hooked up to the tv for multiplayer mk8 and smash.
Yup! Pre-ordered. Traded in the rest of my physical collection. All digital now!
I might consider Switch Lite but after 1 or 2 years from now since Switch Lite is for Handheld purpose only with No docking to TV function.
I was just waiting for this day. Don't want another console plugged on my TV and Nintendo = handheld for me.
I'm getting one... eventually.
Edit: Isn't it the same trailer as the reveal one? Wouldn't call it new, even though it was (re)uploaded today.
A Switch that doesn’t switch, with a terrible form factor that only makes sense on a switching Switch? Um, no thanks. A clamshell design with a footprint of the screen size might have got me interested; but this is devoid of innovation.
Does anyone have a screen that looks that good in bright sunlight?
nope if it had seprate dock maybee my main concern is the controllers with the joycon issues are these different build but why no mini dock sold seprately
Preordered. Ended up getting gray...with a proper dpad this is going to be my traveling retro machine 🙌
I Might consider it.
Not yet though
Lol there's always a basketball court in their modern ads.
Answer to subtitle Q. No, this isn’t for me. But I’m very happy for those that want this.
Answer to “will you buy a pro Switch model?” Absolutely!!
I'm going to give it a miss. No option to dock to a TV is a deal-breaker for me
I’m considering getting one for handheld and leaving my original switch docked for the tv I do like the look and it’s gonna be easier to transport around
@fchinaski enjoy!
In the space section, the language on Mario Odyssey goes from Japanese to English huh
It's not a Switch. And the screen is smaller. If you were going to go that route wouldn't making the screen bigger and of a much higher quality make more sense, if you are purely aiming it at portable players?
why would you take a videogame system with you when you go skateboarding???
@Lordplops smaller unit: better protability
No way. Playing Astral Chain on a 75” is the only way for me. It does play well in handheld mode, but it’s not the same thing. At all. Same goes for BotW. It’s a big screen experience
Nah, I will let it be. I do think it will be a huge succes for Nintendo, but I see absolutely no reason for me to buy it. I have the regular Switch, and it can really Switch. That’s why I bought the console (okay, one of the reasons). If the Lite would have a price tag like € 175,00, I might consider it.
Take Astrail Chain… It looks good. Handheld mode is okay too, but seriously. I can’t imagine playing that game on an even smaller screen than the one the regular Switch has will be a great experience.
@6ch6ris6 that would work if we were talking about something pocket-sized, but we aren't. Most portable players will be stowing this in a rucksack etc so they could have increased the size. Switch Phat. Although I guess that name is reserved for original Switches now. But at least they actually switch.
But this is the same video that was shown the first day.
I'm still firmly attached to my 3DSXL🇪🇺 and New3DSXL🇯🇵 so I'm in no rush to get a Switch. As I mentioned in another thread (check my "Discussions" tab on my profile), the Streetpass/Spotpass functionality is a game changer for me in terms of handheld peripheral..until the Switch Lite gets it I'll stick with my 3DSXL and continue to play the myriad of DS🇯🇵 and 3DS games🇪🇺🇯🇵 I've yet to get and play.
@6ch6ris6 Especially when I don't think that the screen is bright enough for playing under the sunlight.
this is some marketing skillz right there.
If you own a Switch and buy yourself a Switch lite, you are part of the problem.
I am not planning on getting a Lite, but I think overall sales will increase, especially Christmas season and with the new pokemon game.
I almost thought I would get a (hopefully) Animal Crossing Lite edition, if it came out. But then, I realized, I really want to play Animal Crossing handheld AND on the big screen.
Maybe someday I will get a Lite.
Everyone should have one, even the haters. This is the dedicated handheld of the future now, a future Sony told investors was dead and gone
its the same trailer as before lazy
Two reasons:
1) not dockable = no buy
2) joycon drift
20% chance yes, 80% no. It doesn't switch. Battery is meh compared to the original model. Potential Joycon drift?
Batterywise I just don't get Nintendo. They released "newer" version of switch with better battery, a unit which isn't a dedicated handheld, and then this, a dedicated handheld with less battery time than an actual hybrid console. I don't get it. If I purchase anything, it will be an "improved older" unit, or a "pro" version. Though this is a bit tempting too, I must add.
Gonna get me a Lite when Animal Crossing comes out.
Man, the guy at 1:56 looks uncomfortable playing those long FE sessions in handheld mode. Queue dropping the switch on his face when he falls asleep mid-game. I'll stick to the standard switch thanks.
I'm more interested in the more efficient battery Switch. Having two Switches seems pointless and unnecessarily awkward to switch (if you pardon the pun) between the two.
@BlueOcean why would you play under sunlight? i know it is a portable device, but i see those devices as something you use in a hotel room, train etc. like who uses such a device like in the ad? when i go skateboarding i skateboard and dont play videogames. doesnt make any sense to me
Not gonna get one myself, but I may get one for a family member for Christmas. I play primarily docked so even the V2 Switch with the better battery isn't worth the side-step for me personally. If the "New" or Pro version actually drops next year with some good improvements to the flagship model, then yeah I'll be on board with that day one.
This is just the reveal trailer.
Anyway, I'm heavily considering getting one. I have the Pokemon edition preordered. I'm going to help set up my nephew's Lite when the system comes out and get a bit of first hand experience with it, which will help me decide if I want to keep my preorder.
I mainly love the D-Pad, smaller form factor, and integrated controls. I've always been more of a handheld person.
Might save The Witcher 3 until my Lite releases, actually. It'll be an interesting novelty to play a game like that on a dedicated handheld system.
I’m tempted. I like to collect Nintendo Kit. My Switch OG is getting a little worn. But if I buy a lite, then I’d have to get one for my wee lass.
Now, as others have said, a little optional dock would seal the deal and make a lot of sense.
Bluetooth headphone option would also add a bit more value to the thing.
It does make me wish I’d bought all my games on physical too.
"Are you getting one?"
No, because it's a strictly inferior version of a product I already own. And I would not recommend it to anyone because of the missing features. If you are concerned with price, then buy a real Switch used. That is my position.
I don't buy the arguments that the slight size reduction makes it more portable or that you would never ever ever ever want the option to play on a TV and thus don't care about not having that feature.
But hey, it's your life to live. If you really think it's worth it, it's your choice.
@6ch6ris6 Yeah same here. I'd play it if I had time to kill indoors but I think it's more fun skateboarding or skating with friends or whatever than sitting in the park playing video games under the sun. Nobody plays like in this ad.
I might get one just to play it in space.
Only issue I see is the problem of analogue stick drifting. These seem much harder to fix as they aren't detachable like Joycon are (therefore more risky as you'd need to take the whole thing apart). I might just wait until Switch Pro as it suits my needs more.
Fun trailer. I am buying one for my kid as she is living abroad without a TV. Don't need it for myself but it definitely suits her lifestyle.
It's incredible how many people have spent the last two years saying the Switch isn't really portable enough, but now the popular narrative is that this is bad because it's a more portable Switch.
What should be made clear in this article, for those considering the Lite *in addition to there original Switch is the current state of game syncing between them.
My understanding is that it is planned by Nintendo that you will be able to synchronise between the 2 at some point .
I think those considering having both may be in for a shock without this info – as they may discover they are only able to play one game on one machine, or worse they can only register one console for their digital library!?
Nintendo Life? Some clarification please.
Until ifixit or some other site do a teardown and confirm they've upgraded the analogue contacts from graphite to something that isn't so soft and cheap, nobody should spend their hard earned money on one.
Joycon drift has put me right off the Switch which up until all 4 of my controllers knackered was my favourite console of all time. Now instead of playing FFVIII and Ni No Kuni on Switch I just bought a 2nd hand PS3 instead. I'm not paying for them to be fixed when they have an inherent fault.
If Nintendo don't start offering free repairs in the UK before the end of September I'm going to start quoting the sales of goods act at them (which I hate doing. I used to work in electrical sales and know how annoying it is from entitled customers)
Nope. And it's not a Switch. It doesn't Switch. It's not a hybrid. And this was the announcement trailer, so not new.
Nope. I play docked at least 95% of my playtime.
I feel likeI saw this trailer weeks, if not months ago
@Bondi_Surfer,
Once again another post that totally misses the point of the Switch lite,and is based from the posters on narrow point of view that Nintendo are only allowed to release a more powerful Switch revision,as anything cheaper just wont sell as it was not made for the internet posting/YouTube minorities in mind,of course when they are as always proved wrong,they will resort to the old tried and tested line "Some people will buy anything Nintendo make",which as we all know is totally untrue as the Wii U's sales show.
@Heavyarms55,
Best comment so far,yes the new Switch lite is probably not designed for the more core market in mind,but will find it's own market as the mass market will but it in droves,value for money or not.
@johnvboy Wow, well done on entirely missing the crux of what I said. And perhaps you didn't understand the question NL posed, which was will YOU buy the Switch Lite - and for me it's a no. But like I said, in a different form factor I may have been interested - namely a clamshell (so my four year old daughter can play with less chance of it getting broken). Adios
@johnvboy It'll sell, I get that. Many parents who know little to nothing about games will buy them for their kids, and others will buy them because despite missing major features that suggest it should be much cheaper than it is, it is still 100 dollars cheaper than the base model and they wont consider buying used for one reason or another. Collectors always eat up special editions too and that'll drive sales. Seems likely that Nintendo wont release more special editions of the base model for a long time - if ever again, instead releasing them on the Lite to push its sales.
All that said, I'm still not buying one. I'd consider it if the price dropped to about 135-150 dollars. Because around there I would consider the price appropriate for what you are getting.
BOO exercise....
@BlueOcean
NL needs the clickz
You cant even see the screen in that much sunlight...
@Bondi_Surfer,
You put your points across in a way that suggests reasons why nobody should want one,and your reasons seemed to be put in a way as if you were angry for some reason,you could have simply said no the console is not for me..then list the reasons.
How do you actually choose a colour from three dreadful colours?
Yes Please! I want one!
No dockability, no purchase from me.
@YANDMAN Yeah, i had the same passing thought about the colours. I guess Nintendo is trying to maximise their sale potential with 'choice' in their 'safe' colours.
Yellow = kid friendly and synonymous of Pikachu
Teal = probably a continuation of the 3DS's release colour scheme which proved successful and different enough to stand out from its competitors at the time (take that Sony😆)
Gray = Rather bland and dreary yet a solid staple neutral colour for Nintendo consoles in general (bar purple for GCN and GBC and GBA).. also probably cheapest.
Tbh, the best looking Switch Lite is the Pokémon Sword and Shield Edition...(and even that is still a bit meh) so that's saying a lot.
Don't worry, I'm sure Nintendo will release many different versions soon (the 3DSXL and GBASP collections are still by far the most impressive😍) but they also have to be careful to avoid being repetitive with their colour schemes from the Joy-Cons already.
@Roronoa11 I literally do not want or have any use for this console, I have a switch. But if they release a Gameboy DSG version i will snap it up immediately.
@YANDMAN Game Boy version?? Now we're talking!😃 They included a Game Boy Steelbook in the Switch Zelda Link's Awakening Special Edition pack so a hint to it's glorious past (as well a nod to its 30th anniversary) so maybe a Game Boy edition of the Switch Lite for collectors perhaps..? 😊
