With Mortal Kombat 11 now finally out in the wild, it's time to see just how well the Switch version truly performs. Luckily, this video below does just that.
You might remember that, up until very recently, we had received no gameplay footage of the Switch version whatsoever, leaving many to be more than a little concerned at how it would play when released. Early impressions from those who had played it before launch were promising, though, and it certainly seems like we had nothing to worry about at all.
In this comparison video, shared by the folks over at NintendoWorldReport, you can see the Switch version of the game right alongside its PS4 counterpart. There are noticeable visual differences, particularly in the lighting, shadows, and detail in the background, but the Switch version looks great in its own right and the gameplay itself is very smooth indeed.
Have you picked up Mortal Kombat 11 yet? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

When will your review be ready for MK11?
The user reviews on MetaCritic are absolutely destroying this on all platforms for being a microtransactions pay to win fest. Where’s the NL review? The review I will distrust the least.
I hope the pay to win rumours aren’t true
More light now, less light then... Those are basically the differences I'm seeing lol
Now this is how you make a comparison video.
Looks great ! I bought the Xbox One X version but when I see that footage, I'm thinking I would have bought the Switch version instead.
Portable mode rules.
Too bad they didn't release the footage before !
It looks great on the humble Switch. I'll wait for the review as the microtransaction hell is putting me off.
@beazlen1 this was the case with mkx I waited and got mkxl with all the dlc for half of the price of the original mkx and it’s like when people say we want dead or alive 6 or whatever it is now I really don’t with a £70 season pass no thanks but as long as people are willing to do this developers will continue to make games this way
@mist The hardest towers are a nightmare and you need to grind for consumables. It is designed to force microtransactions on you. I don't mind grinding but in a fighting game?
@GrailUK It should do, unless you don't play the towers.
It's a shame that the game looks to be somewhat of a microtransaction grindfest
Fighting games need to take a lesson from Smash Bros and not gouge consumers with DLC and microtransactions.
There were a couple of rusty pipes missing in the background of one of the stages which obviously massively affects the overall gameplay. Preorder cancelled.
Microtransactions + not the base game on the cartridge is a BIG no on the Switch.
At least for me when you have such a huge game in terms of popularity you have to commit more than the bare minimum.
Yeesh. I'm glad I got the PS4 version. At least it runs well performance wise on Switch.
@Fake-E-Lee noice!
@NintenGuy really? All I've read and seen so far is how it stays a pretty consistent 60 fps. What performance do you mean?
@NintendoFan4Lyf especially if there is a bumped up Switch sku later this year where they boost the cpu/gpu some.
@JudgeMethos graphics I'd guess is what he means.
@WiltonRoots yeah, gotta have those pipes 🤔
@Lordplops Oooooooohhhhh. Yeah, portable miss maybe but it does look significantly better when docked. There are videos with the docked Switch vs PS4. It really does look pretty damn good when docked.
@subpopz nope, you are not correct, the microtransactions are not cosmetics only, you have 2 options, one regular and one premium worth twice as regular...
The Mortal Kombat 11 Premium Edition Game
Main Game
Kombat Pack
The Kombat Pack includes:
6 new DLC playable characters
1 week early access to DLC characters
7 Skins
7 sets of gear
@majkti you said "its not cosmetic"
And went on to make a list of microtranactions that are allllll cosmetic 😂
Whoa seriously impressive. It's another Switch triumph. Darn near miraculous. My faith in Netherealm has been vindicated. I'm really looking forward to my physical pre-order now.
@TempOr I dont think this particular version is out in Europe yet.
@WomboCombo What do you mean by that?
Hey, whaddaya know? My news tip has been posted.
Too bad it wasn't mentioned in the article...
Guess I'll have to add it myself:
We thank Nintendo Life member ThanosReXXX for sending in the news tip for this article
Ah... don't mention it, guys. It was my absolute pleasure.
Refuse to buy because we have to download twice as much as what came on the cartridge. This isn't some broke @$$ indie dev that can't afford bigger cartridges because of their budget. This is a giant company who cheaped out in order to make their bottom line more profitable or to minimize their losses in case MK sells miserably on the switch. I'd understand a gig or two but half of the systems internal memory? That's a bit much. Haven't supported any other game that has done this and I wont start now.
@whanvee yep the PAL edition for Switch is not out till 10th May.
@TempOr US reviewers have had their hands on this Switch version and I would guess that the UK reviewers got their copies at a similar time as the game has been on the servers for a while now. But they are holding out for the UK launch.
@JudgeMethos my comment was pretty clear. 😂
@Fake-E-Lee Hahaha! That's dedication man, sounds awesome. I picked it up too, but was waiting for the install to finish before playing.
@WomboCombo Way to sneak in that think a plotline about ENDING SLAVERY is somehow a political statement, and not just, you know, something we should all by default support. Do you also think that the Nazis = Bad statement of Wolfenstein was lecturing you too hard?
Gameplay over graphics for me. Been playing games for too long to complain about the lesser graphics comparisons. Enjoy it if you have it.
@jswhitfield8 You are better off waiting for the whole currency issue to be solved (And maybe the sales that follow because of the issue to start with.)
@WomboCombo The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks. Merry Christmas to you, too!
Without that lighting the game feels more flat and visual uninteresting. There are certain artistic choices that make the environment feel more alive like the alter with shi noks head. That lighting is meant to draw your attention and give the impression of a magical field being present. This is missing from the switch version and would either go unnoticed or loses context.
If you just want to play some mortal Kombat I guess this is something you can live with, but MK is also very much about it's atmosphere. Right now that atmosphere has had a labotomy on switch. Some of that artistic expression has been lost. That isn't even getting to how the lighting makes the characters into glowy entities.
Beautiful game, but I made the right decision to play on ps4 first and wait for this game to come down in price for travel.
@WomboCombo I remember when people were complaining that they made anyone of a different race weird or stupid and people wanted to be represented correctly
Now we have lots of people like you crying because your racist sexist world view isn't represented. What an absolute joke
@WomboCombo MNGA is pretty funny thanks I didn't know that! I don't mind the costumes but it's different for me because I've only played MK XL on Xbox before, I didn't play any predecessors. But I'm also a bit shallow in that I just enjoy a fight in a game regardless of anything else!
Looks pretty good. The differences are only obvious in a side-by-side comparison, and even then you have to look closely to see them.
I got the game and I had to say the gameplay is superbly fun on Switch but like all the rest the grindfest for unlocking craps are too high. Cutscenes when playing in handheld mode looks just as grainy as the ones I seen in Dragon Ball FighterZ but on dock mode it's good. In-game graphics seem spot on though and the game is running at a smooth 60fps, if there are no comparison I wouldn't had believe this is a Switch game.
@TempOr That is correct, only PS4-keys was given out to media. Seem like the PC-version is in a quite bad shape and Switch is of course downgraded. So was probably I wise decension businesswise!
No doubt the Xbox 1X version will eat the PS4 version's lunch. But playability, having fun is what it's about for me and for me the Switch take anywhere version will have more fun than the other versions.
I must be a moron. Much of the time these comparison videos have me shrugging. It doesn't appear as though the Switch version is compromised in any significant way.
I thought for sure this was a game I'd be getting on Playstation, but I seriously can't see a downgrade. Maybe I'm just blind to FPS variations.
The Switch port is ok, but for me MK11 is BotW levels of hype, so as much as I love my Switch I just bought another console just for MK 11. I may double dip for the Switch version if it's on sale, it already is US$10 off on Amazon.
This switch of mk 11 is great, graphically and playability. having the option for tv and on the go, is why I bought this instead of the xbox one version.
@JudgeMethos I jest of course, the thing is that’s the sort of crap that would put people off in this Digital Foundry age sadly, not the weird animation in the game, superficial nonsense like the stitching on the clothes or a bit of mist.
Mine got frame drops and image looks a bit blurred while on portable, on dock mode it got frame drops too but not that frequent like on portable.
Looks great for the "handheld" Version.
Is it true that even if you purchase the physical copy, there's a 16gb patch? Bc that seems a little extra...
Fascinating! In some contexts the difference is glaring, while in others, even side by side, it's hardly noticable. Of course, I was watching this on my Pixel 2 XL smartphone, and on a bigger screen, the differences would likely be even more apparent!
Here's what I suspect: as is so often the case, in side by side comparisons, the differences would leap out at you. But outside of side by side, most of the differences would disappear into the action, and even the Switch version would strike the eyes as being "very good looking". I imagine in slower action moments like victory poses or in slow mo gore fests, you might be able to notice the deficit even without a side by side. But as your mashing buttons for your [digital] life, I'll bet you pretty much only see the positives.
Anyone who actually owns the game on Switch (especially if you also own it on either a base PS4 or XB1), how do the visuals strike you? Let's factor out the PS4 Pro and XB1X or any gaming PC with anything above a GTX1060, since at that point we're looking at essentially a full hardware generation ahead of Switch (or higher), and of course those differences will be unmistakable. But the "half-generation" gulf between Switch and the base consoles could make for a much more interesting comparison. How do you feel the Switch stacks up?
@WomboCombo no it's not just an opinion you sherp it's pretty much fact. Media isn't showing diversity in characters because of politics its showing it because theres more to life than the millions of **** we've been shovelled. There are thousands of soldiers who are black who have saved thousands. Hundreds of black people and white women who invented things.
@majkti This is not the definition of micro-transactions. This is paid DLC. Micro-transactions are things you pay for in game for small amounts(micro). The Premium edition you're talking about is an extra $40. This is normal for most games these days and is not what people are talking about when it comes to micro-transactions.
@subpopz I agree with you that the in-game micro-transactions are no big deal, but the DLC characters are simply NOT cosmetic. These are full characters with different move sets etc. This also doesn't fall under the micro-transaction label. Paid DLC is a completely different discussion from micro-transactions.
In comparisons the areas have taken a hit on the switch version (if you at the background some areas aren't as detailed compared to the PS4 version) but the characters look like they took a minimal hit. Either way I may just wait for the XL version to come out and get it for pc.
No, not yet but if I do, I’m getting it on switch.
@subpopz You misunderstand completely. I'm on your side here. I like the DLC characters. You were saying they were cosmetic and I disagree with that. They're not cosmetic and they're also not micro-transactions. The conversation was about cosmetic micro-transactions, so the DLC characters don't really fit in that conversation. If the in-game micro-transactions are purely cosmetic, then I agree with you completely that they're not a big deal. I also just want to play the game and have matches against my friends. That's what MK is supposed to be about.
@beazlen1 I don't know about trusting NintendoLife. At times, they seem to have only one individual review a game, and that's their say, like with MetaGal (NL gave it a 3/10 when it's much better than that). Hopefully, since this is a AAA title, there should be at least two individuals reviewing it here.
I have it on Nintendo Switch, and it’s fantastic!!!
@Fake-E-Lee I agree with you 100%. 36 with 2 boys though. I’m having a blast with it. I play a lot in handheld and think the switch version is great. I don’t think they have done the day one patch just yet, so there is a chance the game might even look better with the patch
Wow the only difference is in some backgrounds there is more light and in others less.
No difference in the graphics or FPS. Good job guys! This Confinced me even more to buy the switch version to play on the go! 😍
Looks better on the PS4, but as an adult with responsibilities, I am going with the Switch version. Graphics aren't everything, seeing how the gameplay (which I care most about) is fully intact.
@WomboCombo but what you brought up isn't an issue
i actually have only one big complaint: need online connectivity to play.
I have no issues seeing the graphical downgrade, this is expected from Switch which has lower graphical power compared to other consoled
I dont even have issues with the grinding nature.
This game has one of the best tutorials in a fighting game (almost on par with BB), a very good story mode and arcade mode for a fighting game.
BUT i have issues when the game need me to always stay connected to earn whatever koins, unlockables you unlock during the game. without connection, you are not even allowed to go into the krypt to unlock stuffs. If you are in a middle of a game, let say you are in progression in tower, if you got disconnected suddenly, you will be booted out to main menu.
THIS is a big issue for me, especially for a game like this on Switch, where portability is a virtue. so, it means i couldnt play this while commuting, which i do a lot, i need to always stay connected like normal console, which doesnt make sense, and i am in area where internet is not so stable.
SO, sorry NRS, as much as i love this game (the gameplay is really solid), i couldnt recommend this game on Switch unless this always online is disabled.
don't know why but its may 10th for the physical version of this game if you want the eshop version its out now though. Game company's are saying they had to wait for carts so it a 2 and a half week delay for physical i couldn't wait and got the digital version lol.
