Today, video game designer and director Goichi Suda - best known under the name 'Suda51' - is celebrating his 51st birthday. We couldn't just let that slip by without a quick mention, right?
Suda51 first found his way into the video game development world as a designer at Human Entertainment, a Japanese studio which eventually declared bankruptcy at the turn of the millennium. His best-known work, however, has come from his own company Grasshopper Manufacture, which he founded after leaving Human in 1998.
Since then, Grasshopper has developed numerous games across PlayStation 2, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Wii, and more, with titles like The Silver Case, Killer7, and the No More Heroes series being particularly notable. His work is known for going against the norms of development, often using particularly striking visuals or gameplay styles that make his games instantly recognisable.
His next project is Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, which is arriving on Nintendo Switch in just over two weeks' time. He's also been teasing possibilities for Killer7 coming to Nintendo's latest console, as well as a potentially "epic" No More Heroes 3, but his current focus will naturally be on the launch of Travis Strikes Again.
Happy birthday, Suda51! We hope you have a wonderful year!

WHAT is with these people that don't age?! I'ma need some tips yall. Just found my first grey hair last week.
とにかく, お誕生日おめでとうございます すだ51さん!
Thank you for not growing up, Suda!
Happy Birthday! Now his name makes even more sense.😄
Hope I can keep my inner youth exactly like this good man.
That is the face of a man that refuses to succumb to age.
Happy birthday, my dude.
Wow, my man looks amazing for 51. I’m six years his junior, but you’d think it’s him whose the one that’s younger!
I freaking love this. One for us Olds!! Love Suda. Funny his handle matches up now... For a year at least.
Everyone go buy Travis Strikes Again! It's gonna be intense fun and then we'll definitely get No More Heroes 3.
@The_Pixel_King thought the same thing! (Just turned 46 in Dec)
Happy birthday mr suda 51
Hb:)
Aged Wario64.
He sure doesn't look 51. What's your secret? And have a happy birthday.
@ryancraddock Please could you tell us why Goichi Suda calls himself Suda51. (If he was born in 1951 he'd now be 68, so it isn't a year of birth thing.)
He looks great for 51. Suda is the man.
@Julien
Because "Go" and "Ichi"😉 Which basically means "5" and "1".
Happy Birthday Mr Suda!
Got to love his spirit
@MrBlacky Thank you!
@Julien Ah, @MrBlacky beat me to it. But yep, that's it 🙂
now he has to retire next year.
can't very well change his name to Suda 52.
I didn't realize he was that old lol. Happy birthday Suda, one of my fav devs!
Seriously, what is it with Japanese game devs refusing to physically age?! I swear both Suda and Sakurai look like they're in their mid-30's.
When I still had social media, he and I were friends on Facebook along with Akira Yamaoka. I used to greet them both on their birthday with, "Happy birthday, God!" and they both loved it.
So happy they collaborated on NMH2 back in the day and hope this continues in NMH3.
Happy birthday, you magnificent fellow!
@NintendoNomad I turn 46 in July. Is it me, or does each year go by faster than the last?
@The_Pixel_King I laugh about that all the time to myself. Was a time when I laughed at all of the adults who said that. But it's GD true!! Trying to live in every moment now because it's flying by.
Well, now it's time to set a new goal renaming his company to Suda102.
All these Jap developers look so young. Whats in their foood? I need it lol.
@NintendoNomad Absolutely true my brother. Trust me, enjoy every day like it’s yout last. I’ve just been made homeless. Spent my first night in hostel last night and I’m genuinely scared. Not for my safely – but my mortality.
I’m praying that things will be okay in the long run, but my the levels of pain from my Crohn’s disease, back pain and general anxiety are through the roof right now!
@The_Pixel_King we should talk. Hit me up on Twitter @ ChrisUnseen
Happy Birthday Suda 51! Thanks for making such awesome games
