Europe won't be left out in the cold, with a listing on Amazon UK confirming Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age will both score physical releases in this region. The preorders for both games are now live and each game is priced at £44.99. Japan and North America are also receiving these same physical versions (as previously confirmed).
In case you missed it, X / X-2 Remaster will launch on 16th April and Final Fantasy XII will be released at the end of the month on 30th April. It's also worth noting how the X-2 HD Remaster is listed on the Square Enix shop in Europe as a single-use voucher download that comes included with the game card copy of Final Fantasy X HD:
These games were originally revealed during last year's September Nintendo Direct, where many entries from the famous series were announced for the Switch. Take a look at the European box arts below:

And X-2 is a download!
Where's FFXIII, the best Final Fantasy, on Switch?
Please be All Physical for FF X/X-2 HD Switch version, No download code for FF X-2 Switch version.... 😨
Not that it's any surprise (due to the PS version being over 30GB), but X and X2 are confirmed as part-physical-part-download.
Never a fan of the whole one game physical and one game digital thing. Would much prefer a more expensive option with two cartridges instead.
So FFXII: The Zodiac Age - is that just FFXII and they've added a subtitle? It's not a spin-off or anything, right?
Awesome. I was worried that XII would take more space in my Memory Card.
@Baker1000
FF XII duh... (Final Fantasy 12)
Not FF VIII (Final Fantasy 8)
Btw, FF XII The Zodiac Age = remastered of FF XII international PS2 Japan.
The physical/download split of X/X-2 seems weird, but they've apparently done that before. Are these games really that massive storage-wise?
@Baker1000 It's a remaster of FFXII that makes some pretty drastic changes, such as adding a job system, new game modes, rebalancing the level of difficulty, etc.
I loved the original release of FFXII. Other than that I was really only a big fan of FFVI and Tactics. ...I hope they make it onto the Switch too.
I'll get them both, I don't mind FFX-2 as digital as I mostly play the main FF games anyways.
Looking forward to playing these on Switch.
April: dragon's dogma, mk11, and this. Bye wallet.
I figured that there is a good chance that they would spit X & X-2 to half physical, half digital since they did that with the Vita version too. X-2 isn't that good though so it's whatever, X is the main attraction. Need to know whether X included the OG soundtrack though before I make any sort of decision about buying it, the remixed soundtrack is just rancid.
If x2 is digital, it’s an instant pass for me, I already have it in too many platforms anyways.
X-2 as digital?
I'm having ps vita flashbacks...
Waited for Zodiac Age to hit 19.99 on PS4 before getting it. Worth it at that price.
But Ive finished Ninokuni2, cold steel 2, Xeno2, valky4 and Dragon Quest and yet to finish Zodiac Age at this point.
Just does not hold my attention.
Really hope SE is not spending all of 2019 just rehashing old FF games 😒 looking forward more for Cold Steel 3 than anything SE has announced for 2019 at this point.
is there confirmation if X-2 is a download for North America also or no?
X/X2 £9.99 on Steam and PS3.
£45 on Switch. No. Just no.
Great news (except for my wallet)! Here's hoping FFVII gets a physical release as well.
While not particular enticed to see the ports of these games I hope to those looking forward to those titles will enjoy the ride ^-^o
@Baker1000 Yes, It's FFXII.
Final Fantasy X is my favorite JRPG of all time, alongside Lost Odyssey and The Last Story (all 3 Sakaguchi JRPGs).
Bought Final Fantasy X/X-2 on Vita for $40 (download code for X-2)
Bought Final Fantasy X/X-2 on PS4 for $50
Bought Final Fantasy X/X-2 on STEAM for $50
Bought Final Fantasy XII on PS4 for $50
Bought Final Fantasy XII on STEAM for $50
I’ll buy these games again for Switch, too. Physically and digitally. Probably sell all my other versions. Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII are games every single person should play. We’re going to start revoking gamer cards around here if you haven’t played these games by the end of 2019 😉
@riChchestM
It’s 3x that price on STEAM in the US ($30) and 2x that in UK (£20). I just checked. And it didn’t start out that low when it was first brought over. I paid $50 for that game on STEAM when it released, and for XII as well. If you’ve already played the game and you don’t care about owning a portable version, then best to look elsewhere. This is for Nintendo fans who have not had access to the game, and for longtime fans who want a proper handheld version (or just handheld version period in the case of FFXII). And if you haven’t played it, of course you can get it cheaper on platforms that it’s already released on. Wait a few years on Switch and you can grab it at a discount there, too. If you’ve waited years without buying it to where you can boast about getting it $20 less elsewhere, then surely you can likewise wait another couple years for the price to drop on Switch as well.
Nobody buys games on the Switch because it’s the cheapest buy, they buy games on Switch because it’s the best value. Because no other system can offer hybrid gameplay. It cost me $90 for handheld and console on PS4/Vita. And the handheld version was compromised. And no instant switching on same save file. Switch release is a dream come true.
@riChchestM don’t know if you are looking at a regional sale, FFX/2 is $29.99 on US steam right now.
@Baker1000 The Zodiac Age tag is a reference to it being a newer version.
I'm somewhat interested but I do already own all this on steam...
@riChchestM
I don't care with the price.
As long i can get on Switch, that's more than enough.
I can't be the only one getting tired of these (literally) half-assed physical releases. I'd much rather have the full thing on carts, even if they have to release them separately. It's why I didn't bother importing the Megaman Collections... At the end, it simply wasn't worth it, especially after the eShop sale.
@Expa0
Sound Players will be able to choose between original sound and new, rearranged sound
There you have it, directly from the game’s retail listing description 😃
FF XII was just terrible. The story had some good moments, and Balthier is an awesome character, but the mechanics were horrible. Building a game that nearly requires you to program and watch just isn't fun, and turning it off just made the game worse.
@SMEXIZELDAMAN Best Final Fantasy is a bit of a stretch, but I do agree that it would be lovely to have XIII on Switch.
@WaveBoy
I used to hate turn based combat myself. I tried playing Final Fantasy X on Vita and Bravely Default on 3DS, but it just couldn’t hold my attention.
Then my brother told me about a game called Fire Emblem Awakening that was about to release on 3DS. Told me to download the demo and give it a try... Ohh, my gosh. I freaking loved that game. Maybe it was because I grew up playing chess with my dad, I don’t know. But something about it resonated with me, and I played that game to utter completion with 100 hours logged.
When I had finished Awakening, I began to see turn based games in a new light. It was like an epiphany, where suddenly, I could see the appeal. The very first thing I did was go back and give FFX another go. Only this time... I absolutely loved it. Ended up playing that game to utter completion also. Binged on Vita for a solid month. And I can honestly say it’s one of my favorite JRPGs ever (hard to decide between FFX and Lost Odyssey/The Last Story).
Sometimes, all it takes is playing the right game to give you a new perspective.
I don’t understand why people get upset about collections of two games where one is physical and the other is digital. The game is exactly the same either way. Why does it matter?
Pity to see X2 is download only, even though it was expected.
I'll get XII and wait a year to see if a X2 cart turns up in Asia or so, like WoFF.
@JaxonH
Thanks! That pretty much settles it for me.
The preorder has been on amazon uk since Tuesday this isn’t news, once again olds
Didn't the PS4 version of FFX have some sort of bug in it? If I remembered correctly it would be nice for it to be fixed on Switch.
@LunarFlame17 It's more like you're really just getting one game, with the other as a "bonus".
First, the reason people buy the game card in the first place is because they don't want to use up space on their console.
Second, if you lose/break your console or something, that second game is as good as gone. Or they want to be able to re-sell it.
Reminds me of when a few games would advertise a digital game as a bonus feature of a physical game. But if you got to like GameStop and they have the cases opened, you have to assume someone might've already stolen the code.
@Meehanuk Yes i will not be paying £44.99 for 15yr old games. I mean games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Shadow of the Colossus get remade from the ground up and are cheaper than these. 2 of them are a trilogy if games on one disc/cartridge. They should have made them digital only so we can get them at a reasonable price. No doubt they will be £49.99 on the e-Shop
I have both games physically. FFX/X2 on PS3 (artbook cover) and FFXII on PS4 (lovely steelbook) and havent played them yet. So i am gonna wait for a Digital sale discount on XII. I guess the switch versions is the version Im gonna end up playing.
@Agramonte
Tbh I really hope they do.
@SMEXIZELDAMAN I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic.
That FFXII box art looks absolutely gorgeous! I really hope that VII and IX also get physical releases on Switch and Xbox One, using the same cover art from the original PSX releases! Plus VII on a cartridge would be the definition of irony
@JaxonH In the UK last week (haven't checked today) X/X2 was £9.99 on PS Store. It's on sale on Steam so often that it;'s practically never full price. The only reason I didn't buy it on Steam is because I have a Mac. I've played and completed both before so I know what they are worth to me.
Added to the fact that the physical version isn't resellable, well...
The Vita version of X and X 2 was similarly released on cart and code.
@KingMike I get the reselling thing, although to me that’s a bonus of digital games, because I’ve regretted selling a ton of games over the years. The rest I can’t really sympathize with though. Why care if the game is using space on your console? The space is there, might as well use it! And it’s not true any more that digital games are tied to your console. Nintendo FINALLY fixed that, so that’s not an issue.
And yeah, GameStop sucks. I stopped buying new games there years ago. Not that I buy physical games anymore anyway.
Neat. This gives me hope for FF IX physical release.
Remind me, isn't zodiac age a sequel to ff7? Aren't we supposed to get the original ff7? Also is there a release date for ff9? Pleased to be getting physical nonetheless
Viva to Download Codes! We love them! Keep them coming!
Damn Switch prices. I didnt get the FFX games because after I heard they're Switch bound, but now it's ruined.
@eltomo
What did you expect guy? These aren’t “Switch prices” these are game prices. When they brought Final Fantasy XII over to STEAM less than a year ago, it cost the exact same thing. When they released on PS4, they all cost the exact same thing. You think Switch gamers are better than STEAM/PS4 gamers that we’d somehow see the game release for less than when they released on those platforms?
Understand, you are not going to get games for a discount until after they’ve sold them for the same price they sold them on every other platform they released for. This is how it’s been for 30+ years, and will always be.
@LunarFlame17
Bonus of digital games being you've regretted selling physical?!
The thing is, you can just rebuy the physical games. But with digital games you've regretted buying, there's just no comeback. I've bought some shockers, especially in the first few months of the Switch. I Am Setsuna springs to mind. 30 notes I'll never get back. Not a single penny. And it's no consolation I've got it in my library forever more.
@JaxonH old Eurogamer article says £39.99 for PS4, and that was the steelbook edition, you lose.
But I wouldnt get it at that price either.
@eltomo
I’m in the US. It’s $50, and was on both STEAM and PS4. you lose How childish can you be dude. Come on. Even with a £5 discrepancy, the point is, this is just what the games cost. If you can’t afford what games cost then I have pity for you, but don’t try to make it sound like they are being unreasonable.
Does anyone know if x-2 is download only in all regions? Or maybe japan is getting both x and x-2 on cartridge?
FF XII, Personsa V and Return of the Obra Dinn are my top three games I haven't played yet and desperately need on Switch. That's one down and two to go.
I won't mind. I'll just upload it and enjoy it. I just can't wait to get these games.
@Yas
I get what you mean. I went a little buy crazy on Switch with all the sales recently and I have nine rows of games in my library and of those 54 at least 30 of those would be on the shelves at gamestop right now if I hadn't gone all digital starting last generation. I still prefer digital but I can definitely understand being stuck unable to sell unwanted games.
@Kaile
I think they are going with a single 16gb cart, 32s are just too expensive for anyone to use apparently. I suspect X2 will be a download for everyone.
@SMEXIZELDAMAN The '5+' downvotes on your comment are making me laugh so much. The universal hatred of XIII is that strong hahaha
A good sign. A physical copy of FF7 on Switch is the dream.
@JaxonH UK price in the article, not the same, nuff said.
You can get a better version of the game elsewhere, I doubt as much effort goes into this release over the original HD release, so its not unreasonable to expect a lower price.
Usual situation, it wont sell as well, mostly cos of the fact its already available for less, then Square will think no one wants FF on Switch, then we all lose.
The consumers aren't fools.
I'm getting both digitally, anyway. Still, good news for those who want these physically.
As a noob who’s always wanted to play final fantasy, what game should I start with and why... thanks in advance!
@Yas Yeah, that is the flip side, but I’m talking about games I’ve sold and then regretted selling years later, when they’re not easy to find. Like, I used to have a copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends for GameCube, and I’d love to buy that again, but it costs $70 or more now. Plus, I always take immaculate care of my physical games, and when I have rebought games I regretted selling, they’re always in much worse shape than the copies I sold. Yes, I do have some digital games that I would sell if I had a physical copy (like I Am Setsuna), but all in all, I’d rather have games than not have them.
@eltomo
Buying a version that gives you the value you desire isn’t foolish. Judging a game on price alone without accounting for value... that is foolish, and only warranted if all other factors are equal. And with Switch that is not the case.
The game will sell fine, just as Tales of Vesperia Switch outsold all other versions. Just as Diablo 3 amd Skyrim have done well. Games on switch are selling like crazy because people want a hybrid version. Nobody cares that you can get it for less on another console aside from a few minority price warriors patrolling articles. If people wanted the game for less on another console, because they only care about price, they would’ve already bought it (and most probably paid the same price there since the bulk of sales are at launch). Most people buying this game on Switch are buying it because they don’t want it on another console- they want it on Switch, or because they also want it on Switch.
Most people have jobs and are used to games costing $50 or $60 so this isn’t an issue in the slightest for them. Majority of people can afford to buy games they want when they want them. The majority of people complaining that a game cost $5 more on another console when it released 10 months ago is marginal at best.
When the game released on STEAM for the same price last February, you didn’t see people protesting the game en mass leading to poor sales. Neither will you see it happen on Switch. $50 didn’t stop the PS4 version from selling. $50 didn’t stop the STEAM version from selling (and in both those cases you could have gotten it on “another system” for less). $50 wont stop the Switch version from selling either. The vast majority of gamers will gladly exchange such a sum for an HD hybrid portable version of a timeless classic that’s never released on consoles outside of PS.
@KingMike Not sure how you get the idea that the game is gone if you loose/break the console. The save file might be lost (if you don't have cloud save), but the game is bound to your account, not your switch.
Also, you can get a micro SD card. If this one runs out of space, you can backup all the game files to a PC (there is a instructions on the Nintendo website, which is actually a How-To copy files from one SD to another).
Therefore, you even have possibilities to archive the games for the time after the Servers of the switch are shut down.
Only point which is valid is the reselling point. But this is will never do again as I completely regret that I sold my complete SNES collection as a kid to buy a ps1...
This reminds me so much of what they did on the Vita, had to import asian-english X-2 because over there X and X-2 are seperate copies in english.
Works fine on the VIta so I don't need the Switch version, but it is pity for people that do want this, PS3 version of both games are around 22gb, PS4 is around 32gb.
I'm more worried about Zodiac Age, PS4 version is 40+ gb so that's a lot of compressing unless there is a required download.
think i'll wait for a sale
@GhostGarrity Well I think it depends on what a person has done with each installment.
I moved my FF collection to Steam. been getting them cheap with each Steam Sale. So rather keep them all in one place from now on - I'll buy this one last time on Steam once $9 or $15.
https://store.steampowered.com/sale/final-fantasy/
@JaxonH Tales is a bad example, same day multi-platform for a game not out of Japan, whilst I happy it sold better than PS4 in the UK, other regions would suggest otherwise.
Sure people will buy it on Switch, those only have Nintendo consoles and want that portability.
I'm an example of someone who does want on Switch but now completely put off by the price. I doubt I'm alone, people are suggesting waiting for a sale or not getting it at all.
I'll make a bet with you, if it outsales PS4s first week global sales, i'll buy full price. (Thats should be fair as its originally PS3)
If it doesnt, you have to admit you lost!
@BlueBlur101 "Someone please get the guys who make cartridge games a cigarette and a blindfold. Possibly the greatest game ever made is available only on PlayStation. Good thing. If it were available on cartridge, it'd retail for around $1,200."
Once again, comparisons to price is silly. Of course you can get it for cheaper elsewhere, because it been out much longer elsewhere. 😒 Comparing console prices to Steam is unfair anyway, Steam prices will always undercut those of consoles, has always been like that.
Having X2 as a download shouldn't be surprising either, both games equal like 30 GB, so yeah.. No one complained when they did the same on Vita, shouldn't be a problem here.
@SMEXIZELDAMAN hope you were kidding man. FF 13 is probably on the worst top 3
@eltomo
I don’t think you should buy at full price if you don’t want to. Never said there was anything wrong with someone waiting if they personally feel it’s not worth it to them.
The problem is when you treat that as objective fact that’s true for everyone or even the majority, rather than a subjective opinion true for only yourself, or blame the developers as if they’re doing something wrong or outrageous. As if selling the game for the same price they sold it for 10 months ago when they released it on Steam is an “affront” to you as a gamer. It’s not.
The great thing is, do you know how prices dropped on other platforms? Time. They dropped because you waited a span of time. If you can wait a span of time for those to drop, you can certainly white a span of time for the Switch version to drop.
But it seems rather ludicrous to wait months or even years without buying, then suddenly get upset that a new platform release is not being sold for the same sale price on day 1 that other platforms had to wait years to achieve, the same exact price STEAM had 10 months ago when it was ported over.
@SigourneyBeaver Bug? I don't remember running into any bugs when playing through FFX on my ps4
People tend to forget that cartridge cost more than disc hence the higher price, but at least the cartridge is more durable and sturdy.
@eltomo
Btw, other regions definitely do not suggest otherwise for Tales (barring Japan, but it was within 20k). In fact, it’s outsold other versions even more in the US. I’ve tracked that game on Amazon best sellers list since it went live, and it stayed a consistent 50-200 rankings higher than the PS4 version and 1,000+ rankings higher than the X1 version. Just FYI. Even now the game is well over 200 rankings higher than the PS4 version. It topped out at #45, while the PS4 version topped out around #80, and stayed in the top 50 for a full week while PS4 dropped to #180.
Not that every game is going to outsell other versions. Not by any means. You’re right that day and date contributed here so people had an upfront choice, whereas FFX and FFXII did not, so many already bought it. True. But. It was a port of a 7th gen game being sold for $50. So it’s a suitable example that just because a game is older doesn’t mean people (especially Switch gamers) aren’t willing to pay for it. You could get it cheaper on Xbox 360, but nobody did, because it’s not all about the cheapest price. People want games on current platforms they play on a lot, and will pay more to get that. People also want games on a hybrid system and will pay more to get that. If those things didn’t matter, everyone would have rushed out and bought it on 360 for $10
@riChchestM They have been out on those platforms for a while.
And this is the only way to play them por... o yeah, it's on the Vita as well.
Well.. The prices are a bit off, but being able to play them on the Switch is a nice bonus.
For X / X-2 I'll do a double dip. For the others though, I might wait for a price drop / sale someday.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will be a day one, as well.
@BenAV The sizes of the two games combined are over 30GB, so I can get past the digital-physical debacle for one time.
Now if this happens with VII, IX and XII, then we have a problem
@LunarFlame17 "I don’t understand why people get upset about collections of two games where one is physical and the other is digital. The game is exactly the same either way. Why does it matter?"
The biggest reason is because having a physical copy of a game means you actually own it; you can do whatever you want with it. With a digital game, you don't own it - you're just paying for permission to play it on a single account.
@eltomo who says it has to sell as well as other versions. We have heard this all before. People make brash claims how switch versions of games won't sell well as it's cheaper on other systems.
I have no doubt the games will hit the numbers S-E project.
Anyway if you not happy with the price, don't buy it.
The Zodiac Age will come home for sure!
@Emperor-Palpsy
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/01/guide_the_best_nintendo_switch_micro_sd_cards
Seriously, if you still dont have a SD card for the Switch you must be very dumb.
@kobashi100 thats all that had to be said, not happy about the price, I ain't gonna buy. No need for this downvoting and angry responses.
I do believe this pricing hurts future prospects and there has been publishers saying the sales on Switch effects their future decisions. Bad sales could effect Switches chances of seeing something like Secret of Mana on Switch out of Japan, it didnt do well on PS4, if FF flops, why would they bother releasing anything else?
I hope I'm wrong, but the response is mixed because of price and this download code (which doesnt bother me)
@Yosher THAT I would buy for sure. IX was the last great FF.
@zander_dale VI (great story and characters but you have to play it in some sort of SNES, either hardware or VC), VII if you don't mind the very blocky graphics ( it is my favourite and has the most straightforward gameplay) or IX (classic gameplay and better graphics than VII even though both PSOne)
X is also a good entry and starting point (basically as they are all different and not related you can start anywhere)
@Anti-Matter err thanks. Yeah I typed VIII by mistake originally.
Well, I guess 2 outta 3 physical isnt a complete loss. Might wanna get those bigger Switch gamecards out soon Nintendo!
Be nice if VII and IX were a physical bundle even if IX had to be the digital one. I'm certain one look at VII on store shelves and that'll be a hot seller....
They better release physical copies of VII and IX.
I’ve owned X/X-2 on on various platforms, but the Switch price is way too high for such an older game that was on the PS2. It’s damn near full retail. C’mon Nintendo you can do better!
Shame the FF 12 box art is so boring.
$50 or $60 for these ports just seems too pricey. I’m interested in giving the FF franchise a shot, but probably not at full price
@JaxonH It's interesting how people only seem to complain about prices when games come to a Nintendo console. Any other system, the fans are just happy to be able to play games on their preferred platform. You didn't hear asinine complaints about price when MH World launched late on PC at full price. You won't hear complaints when Trails of Cold Steel re-releases on PS4 for $10 more than the original version costed at launch years ago.
i hope this is a sign that the secret of mana remake will come to the switch, too.
I live in Germany but I'll get the NA version, I prefer the ESRB box design.
Now we're talking. I've never played those games and I think they deserved the physical treatment. I hope they do that with VII too.
But I'll definitely wait for a price drop or a temporary sale. They're not going to go anywhere and I have a huge backlog already.
@eltomo
Each company and each game varies though. We don’t have exact figures and there’s potential for variance in manufacturing costs (Switch cart v PS4 Blu-ray v Steam download). However 50000 copies at £45 generates more revenue than 100000 copies at £20. Take Doom for example. It’s price hasn’t really dropped much on Switch whereas it’s been as low as £6 physical/£6.49 digital on PS4. Great on the surface for the consumer but from the publisher point of view, a market where Bethesda can keep picking up sales at £30+ could well be very attractive.
@Ralizah
[Shakes head]
Its ridiculous.
And because so many people sheepishly repeat whatever they see and observe others doing, the same repeat offenders patrolling every article complaining about games are launching for the same gosh dang price they were on every other system as if they're somehow special, they get everyone else saying the crap too.
I cant remember the last game people didnt complain about. This is the only fanbase where, they're not happy if they're not complaining about something. Fantastic news, 2 of the greatest JRPGs ever made, leaving Sony exclusivity and finally arriving on a Nintendo console... and what do people do? Complain. God forbid they pay the same price everyone else had to pay.
It's just ignorance in the highest degree. Children who dont understand how the world works and cant afford their own games. Get mad at the price, not the fact your mom wont buy you whatever you want on demand
@JaxonH there is always someone who blindly sticks up for Nintendo. That pricing is ridiculously high and alienates a lot of people. I love Nintendo but there is no need for those prices. I will not be shelling out for them, even though i was so looking forward to portable Final Fantasy.
@JaxonH Final Fantasy has not been a Sony exclusive since 13. And all others have been on PC for sometime. However the pricing is still ridiculous. They were not that expensive on release on PS4. Nowhere near.
@CupidStunt
There it us, the guy who always accuses people of "defending Nintendo" whenever shooting down your faulty logic. Nintendo doesnt have anything to do with anything guy. This is Square Enix. At least get your companies straight before you accuse me of defending someone.
And yes, actually the games were this expensive on PS4. And STEAM. And now Xbox One as well. And it didn't release "years ago" for the same price, Final Fantasy XII released last February on STEAM! For the same $50! And is releasing on X1 for same $50! You dont see them complaining. You aren't entitled to a lower price. You earn it platform by platform by waiting for price to drop.
This is what Ralizah was talking about. You didnt see PC gamers kicking a fuss over the games price on STEAM less than a year ago. You didnt see them kicking a fuss over MH World or DB Fighter Z launching a year later for the same price.
Nope. Only Nintendo fans think they're special. Everyone else is just happy to get a great game. Nintendo fans think they deserve to be begged and grovelled toward. You're not special. You're gonna pay the same price everyone else did when they launched on other systems or you can just do without on Switch. If people would stop living such a sheltered existence they would know these things. They'd know STEAM launched same price last year and even now, in a sale, is still just $20 less.
@Balta666 Thank you! Will wait for reviews and then dive in... until then I will continue to battle my way through breathe of the wild master mode and hold out for a 1080 snowboarding game.
@JaxonH those are just trolls man. No one with a minimum of information would say those idiot things
The problem I have with these ports, is that I don't think $80 (price of brand new releases in Canada), is really abusive when we're dealing with brand new games. These games require tons of work to create. That $80 support all the works that needs to be done for that game to be created. Also, when ports happens really close to the main release, I don't have a problem with that either.
Now, ports of older games, or ports happenning when original releases have dropped price since a good while already, weren't actually made from scratch. A lot of what would've been needed for the game already exists. All art assets, voice-acting, music, textures, motions data, levels and whatnot, are things that could, at best, be taken as is, or at worse, modified to fit a system's constraints. Asking the same $80 for something that didn't require as much work from as many people to create, to me, is just not right. (This is how I view things, you might disagree).
I'm not dissing on the fabulous work some of those ports required to happen (especially on the Switch). But no way porting a game that has all (or most) existing assets already done is worth the same amount of money than one created from scratch by a team of hundreds of people, if not more.
Sure, other factors need to be considered too, like for a physical release, cost of medium (and Switch carts are pricier to make than plain discs), and this means we can't always expect price to be on par with other platforms. But when you have games like Doom selling for about $20 everywhere elese, and $80 on the Switch, it's not just slightly pricier. It's like 400% the price.
Understand : It's not the price in itself. It's the fact that most multiplatform titles available on Switch give the buyer the impression that it's the worst deal ever. Sometimes even when on sale, a game is still pricier than on competing platforms. This prevents me from buying a lot of games. Not because I'm cheap (I have the money and would gladly spend it on an original game). But because I can't get around the idea that I'd get the game for a lot less somewhere else. And it makes me go "no way I'd pay $80 for a title I can get for $20 elsewhere".
I don't think people complaining about prices are cheap. Many won't see a problem paying full price for an original work like Zelda, Mario, or even a brand new multiplatform title released simultaneously everywhere. The problems often are with late ports, sometimes over 1+ year later, sold for full price without anything extra added to them.
I have never finished a FF game, but I really want to try either X or XII on switch. I have really only gotten into JRPG's in the last couple of years though. I've tried playing FFVII, but just could not get into it. I'm hoping one of these will hold my attention.
@CupidStunt The games launch at the same price on every platform. SE has a right to recoup the costs associated with porting its games. If $50 is too pricey for you, do what every non-entitled gamer does: wait for the price to drop, buy a cheaper copy second-hand, or nab it on a platform where it has been out longer.
@Ralizah Ublike other consoles, games on Switch rarely drop in price.
@CupidStunt Depends on the publisher. Games released by third party publishers generally drop in price quite nicely on Switch. Nintendo-published games tend to maintain high prices.
So far, most of the SE games on the system have been released by Nintendo, which is why they maintain high prices. As far as I am aware, SE is publishing the FF Switch ports themselves, so it's unlikely the prices won't drop over time.
Of course, in general, it is true that Nintendo ports of games don't usually have race-to-the-bottom pricing after the first month on the market. There is a conversation to be had on this subject without devolving into hyperbole.
@Quarth
Funny thing is if vii had a physical copy and it was £39.99 I wouldn't complain.
@JaxonH found an Steam community post with people moaning about the price.

And that they charged $10 more than the PS4 version making it even more infuriating for them.
Not just Nintendo diehards.
@BenAV Agreed. Same headache with Bayonetta on Switch. I liked how the Wii U version of Bayonetta 1 & 2 had two discs with the launch copies of those games but on Switch it was this 1 game, 1 download thing. Now Final Fantasy is doing the same thing, it's rather annoying. Since my hubby and I will want to play these games, it makes sense to have physical copies of games we can share across both our Switch consoles. But I guess we won't get to do that with X-2.
@SigourneyBeaver there was a sound issue that got patched upon its initial release if that's what you are referring too
@BlueBlur101 You know what they say about assumptions
I was dead serious.
@DarthFoxMcCloud I forked out the money for the Japanese special edition of Bayonetta so I could have two cartridges. Resident Evil Revelations is another one that did it but I was slightly less bothered by that as I only really wanted it for the first game anyway. Apparently the South-East Asian version of Final Fantasy X/X-2 which is being published by Bandai Namco contains both games on the same cartridge. If that's the case then I'll be importing that version.
So, we'd be right in assuming that 7 and 9 will come out before this?
@DarkLloyd I remember the sound bug, but I Googled other bugs and it's something to do with RNG.
@SMEXIZELDAMAN Regarding FFXIII - the latest upgraded console version is exclusively for Xbox One, apparently.
But considering it is a PS3 game, I am surprised there is no Switch version.
@JaxonH I got FFXII for £15 on PS4 and FFX/X2 for £9.99 on Steam. These ports of older games are not deserving of being full priced games. They can remake full trilogies of games and sell them at lesser prices.
@CupidStunt
That's nonsense.
Final Fantasy XII launched on STEAM just one year ago and was full price then too (and is still full price now). And it just launched on PS4 the year or so before that at full price.
Whether you got them in a temporary sale is irrelevant. Wait a year after Switch's launch and you can find a cheaper sale price also. But they didnt launch the game on STEAM for a discount just because it had come out a year before on PS4, and they're not gonna a launch for less on Switch either.
Games launch for the same price as everywhere else. The end. You got cheaper prices by waiting for a sale. Likewise, you can get cheaper prices on Switch by waiting for a sale. But nobody is going to launch a game on a permanent discount to every other version just because they had a sale, and before demand at that price has been satisfied. That's not how the world works. That's not how economics works. You have the freedom to post here, but that comes with the responsibility to know what you're talking about.
