If you've been playing Mario Tennis Aces on the Nintendo Switch recently with a friend or family member, you may have encountered an error where the software immediately closes when you enter the "Co-Op Challenge" mode.
Nintendo has now issued an update on the situation in the support section of its website - with a fix expected to arrive on 16th October:
Description:
After selecting "Co-Op Challenge" from the main menu of Mario Tennis Aces, the software closes and the error message "The software was closed because an error occurred" is displayed.
What to Do:
We are aware of this situation, and expect this should be resolved by Oct 16th, 2018.
Once this issue is resolved, results for the Co-Op Challenge that occurred will be available.
The Co-Op Challenge for Mario Tennis Aces was first detailed during Nintendo's Direct presentation around the time of this year's E3. It's focused on completing limited time online missions, with the rewards being new outfits and colour variations for certain characters. As noted above, the results for this challenge will be available once the issue is resolved.
Have you been playing tennis with Mario lately, or are you too busy partying with him instead? Have you experienced this error yourself? Are you still enjoying Mario Tennis in general? Tell us in the comments below.

Aw, please Nintendo.
I have paid $ 20 for Paid Online Service.
I expect for Better Online.
I will wait patiently until it fixed.
I wish they had released this when it was, oh, I don't know... complete?
@Silly_G everyone would want this but Nintendo saves money when they put in a smaller cartridge and then add things later.
Great game and I would say the online and the game mechanics are great.
@1UP_MARIO : The base game was under 2GB anyway, so cartridge space would hardly have been an issue.
This is more of a case of "make money now, apologise later".
Still playing this regularly but only online tournament with Simple rules. If that was the only mode the game had I'd be happy.I played the Co-op challenge once and haven't gone back to it, didn't like it.
@Silly_G I know but I’d say maybe they removed stuff for later as it would’ve hit the 3 gb range making them use bigger cartridges. Only guessing and could be wrong.
@OorWullie that’s all I play online tournament. I’m just surprised I’ve played this game more than super mario odyssey and splatoon 2
@1UP_MARIO : I doubt that was the issue though. Manufacturers don't even bother producing anything under 8GB anymore (for USBs and SD cards) as the difference in manufacturing cost is neglibile at this point and therefore, no longer worth producing.
It's a little disappointing as it would have been nice to be able to buy 1-4GB USBs in bulk in the event that they would be requested (I sometimes produce event videos for private consumption).
@Silly_G you could be right. I’m just moody when I buy a game day one I want the full finished game and not wait for the game to finish. It’s like super mario party comes with 4 boards and since day 1 people are already talking about free dlc. Already
the game was a let down. nintendo in 2018 is lack luster cause no great new games. they were pumping out quality on the wii u sinking ship but now want to make mario movies n be known as an "entertainment company" ..I dunno I wish they would just make great games for us n focus all there energy into the switch
I'm on the fence with this game. I loved Mario tennis 64. NL give this game an underwhelmed review score which kind of put me off. Now with the dust settled and a few patches here and there. What's the game like Now? Thanks
@Benjoo if you loved Mario Tennis 64, you'd love Mario Aces. Especially simple modd, core mechanics are great. And online is very lively as well.
Is online still the Waliuigi, Bowser Jr show?
@santaglause nah they fixed them but it’s all peach now lol but overall a great only ne experience
@Benjoo great game and the online tournament is fantastic with a healthy community of players
Just can't put this game down. The online tournament is so engaging
Wouldn't it have been better to finish the game later but already complete and tested? Maybe that way they would have beefed up the single player content a little.
@paihia It’s not that Nintendo isn’t producing quality games. They just haven’t been making them. Mario Tennis was Camelot, Kirby was HALL and Octopath was Square. The only Nintendo made games I can think of this year are Sushi Striker and Mario Party, 2 games that I’m actually rather fond of. You’re right though, Nintendo is too focused on other forms of entertainment over games. I feel this is down to a desperate attack with the first year of games, with no plan for the second. In fairness, 2019 does look promising though...
@TheFanatic 2019 does look more promising! but the big N are getting long in the tooth now n imo have lost that creative drive that only the young seam to strive for..
@1UP_MARIO : No, I'm completely with you there. I also hate DLC because it is console-locked and is obviously not included on the cartridge, so I will never be able to preserve the full game for prosperity (unless a "complete" edition comes along later). I would much rather prefer a new instalment over DLC any day of the week, and Mario Party is one of Nintendo's few franchises that they can release on an annual (or so) basis without running the risk of brand fatigue.
I was actually really happy that Super Mario Party was version 1.0 on the cartridge and did not require a day one download. It was quite refreshing in this day and age, and it's sad that it's not even expected from physical software anymore.
@paihia I agree. Nintendo seem to be focusing on nostalgia, which seems to be a definite money maker. However, small indie games with no lore or fanbase to fall back on seem to be making better games. Not saying Nintendo makes bad games, far from it, but sometimes they feel less like passion projects and more like obligations. Of course, there are exceptions, notably BOTW, Odyssey and Smash Ultimate.
@paihia I can't agree that they have lost that creative drive, we're just seeing less of it. Splatoon, ARMS and Breath of the Wild prove when Nintendo put their minds to it, they're better than anyone. I just wish they done more, Splatoon should have proved to them new IP's can be a success. ARMS was also fairly successful but was always going to be a niche kind of game. Daemon X Machina will also fall into that category.
@Silly_G ... a limonade is refreshing ... a game that is released on version 1.0 without day1 patch is nothing but refreshing.
Nintendo is really dropping the ball... that is very embarrassing... why not issue a patch today to remove the broken feature until fixed?
Nintendo is making noob mistakes.
Its finally happening for realsies this time, nintendoom is happening!
Nah, its just a bug they plan on fixing later. They achnowleged it and unfortunately some things can’t be fixed immediately. If Mario Tennis was released by any other company they wouldn’t have been as generous as Nintendo/Camelot have been with updates this far out from its original launch, so the constant negative attention this game recieves on this site is way more than it deserves.
Nice of them to fix it quickly. I don't understand the whining on the above comments.
@1UP_MARIO I like DLC but Super Mario Party has gone a bit too far with lack of launch content.
@Cygoku ...so both are, in fact, refreshing?
They should have made Mario golf instead
@Silly_G problem is Nintendo cards not your standard SD cards. So trying equate Apples and Oranges shows lack of knowledge here.
Could they resolve the issue pertaining to the abysmal single player campaign?
@SwitchForce : What are you even talking about? I was using SD cards as an analogy to demonstrate why cartridge size was not a determining factor in Nintendo releasing the game in the manner that they have. If you are going to disparage someone for a lack of "knowledge", then perhaps you ought to enlighten them of the knowledge that you possess, if any.
Switch cartridges should also be significantly cheaper to produce than microSD cards due to their larger physical size and the fact that they are read-only, however, we have not been made privy to the actual costs involved due to a lack of transparency in the matter, so we can only speculate based on similar storage formats.
Can they fix the Online Mariothon in Super Mario Party first? It's a disconnect-fest.
I get this error a lot during matches on dragonball FighterZ.
It's a real pain in the neck!
After it’s fixed, I assume we will also immediately get a new co-op challenge, live with new accessories / colors for someone else??
Okay, but.

Stop making excuses, Nintendo. :I
