We recently learned that Rare wanted to do amiibo-style toys during the N64 era, which frankly would have been amazing. YouTuber James (aka yoshielectron) has now craftily found a way of retroactively adding amiibo support to Super Mario 64, which might be the next best thing. You may remember him from when he created a 'real-world HUD' for the same game.
Using a program that he wrote along with an NFC reader he was able to detect the amiibo's 7 digit unique ID and send a Gameshark code to Super Mario 64 running on Project 64, prompting events upon detecting an amiibo.
In the video a silver Mario amiibo is tapped and Mario turns into Metal Mario; tapping a Mega Yarn Yoshi gives extra lives.
It's neat to see, and is certainly something we'd like to see in the next generation of Virtual Console games on NX. We can dream right? Check out the video and let us know what you think.

After all the rumors in the late 90's of being able to play as Peach or Luigi through bizarre methods like waiting 2 hours after beating the game, it would be nice if an amiibo actually let you do that.
That submarine hangar... I had forgotten that stage.
Interesting.
Cool.
But back to the 'real-world HUD' topic:
I'm staggered that no one (not even Damien) mentioned R.O.B. with the NES!
That is SUPER COOL! It'll never happen officially, but I daresay this would justify the premium prices on the VC!
@LegendOfPokemon well if this happened it would just add on to that premium price at no cost to the end user assuming Nintendo doesn't charge though the roof for the new additions lol...
That is cool, but using an emulator takes the fun out of it.
@FierceRagnar You can gain extra lives and the metal Mario power up without amiibo, so they aren't 'figure-locked gameplay elements'.
It's just someone having fun and enoying a product.
Huh? Seriously?
@FierceRagnar i'd say doing just because you can is sufficient enough. Would look good on a resume.
Cool little expiriment. I'd like some basic features in NES games (Bilinear AA filter on/off, perfect pixel mode, over scan on/off, brightness filter on/off) before we start adding additional content. The VC needs some work just getting the games right.
@RadioShadow If you have the game, even if it's on VC, it's fine. Besides, emulators let you use GameShark codes, something Nintendo will never allow to be used in their games anymore.
@RadioShadow There's plenty fun about emulators (including the VC), but I also enjoy owning and playing from the original cart.
Cool experiment, but I rather not have Amiibo support in older Nintendo games, because I'm honestly not a huge fan of them.
Mario 64...now made less good!!
