Well, this is not exactly the case. It goes: it you fire your beam and don't hit anything, it breaks your chain (and thus, your multiplier). The "MISS" text is for your chain only. For a beat to count against your "Mode Down" meter, it must actually fade off and disappear. You only get dinged once per beat.
Hey everyone, keep the discussion going! We are very curious to see all of your opinions.
I hope everyone is aware these are just first impressions. My opinion is far from decided after less than ten tries, but it's definitely a lot of fun whether or not it's as good as Beat, and better than most other WiiWare games I have.
Does the plus button do anything other than make a noise? I'm having a lot of fun adding in notes between beats -- not to mention causing myself to miss a lot of beats, too, haha.

Nope, that's just the "freestyle" feature We started a tradition of mapping all unused buttons to musical SFX. Just for fun... or distraction!
i'm so torn between finishing Devil Survivor first before purchasing this or buying it now and interrupting that game. D:
BEST THREAD EVER future of NL >:3
[16:43] James: I should learn these site rules more clearly
[16:44] LztheBlehBird: James doesn't know the rules? For shame!!!
Just beat Discovery on my 6th try It's still hard to decide whether I prefer this to Beat or not... in both games there's sort of an underlying rhythm that basically governs how you play the game, and mastering the rhythm in Beat relied almost entirely on the player's skill in controlling the paddle while Core is more of a cerebral game and relies on stuff like pattern recognition... anyway on to the second level!

It definitely counts as a miss if you trigger the beam without hitting anything. Here's what tipped me off: the big MISS indicator lighting up and the score multiplier being reset.

Thanks very much for clearing that up...it looks like it was a problem of perception (on my end) rather than one of vicious cruelty (on yours). That makes a lot more sense. It felt like I was "dying" much more quickly, but that's probably due to me losing track of the pixels when things get hectic.
I finished level 1, and I have to say I was curious about how you'd do bosses in this game...the boss of level 1 though was brilliant. Well done; that was an awesome way to handle it.
Oddly enough level 2 is making me like the game more. Maybe it's because I'm "better" at it, having spent so much time in level 1, but I think the triggering of the beam fits in better with the tune in the second level, which is making it easier for me to keep track of what I'm doing.
Either way, I'll probably end up thinking Beat is the better game, but this one is already growing on me. And now that you've cleared up the MISS issue, I feel better about losing so frequently. I don't mind if I lose of my own accord, I just didn't want you guys helping me do it.
Hey osb1842 I made a suggestion a while back (when Beat bug was discussed) that you should release a Bit Trip Leaderboard channel where all tripped people can see how good/bad we are trippin´. Have you thought about it? Will it happen?

Hey Mange, thanks again for the suggestion. We are definitely investigating online leaderboards for future games. If we ever do it, we want to make sure it's super-awesome and "fits" into the design well. You definitely aren't the only one who wants to see this happen
Well I guess I'd better save my comments for the review, but I wanted to congratulate Chris and the guys at Gaijin Games for being the 100th WiiWare game. Congrats!

Thanks Corbie! All the kind words from you guys on these forums keep us motivated
I stayed away from watching any trailers or reading any information on CORE since anything in the Bit.Trip series is an automatic buy for me.
Well, I just played a little bit of CORE and I was blown away! What a perfect successor to BEAT! The entire experience felt completely natural from the very beginning.
I can't wait to see what you guys have planned next for the series. Oh, and will we get a soundtrack once the whole series has been released?
