I was thinking if there were a 3DS version it could have a lot of potential. For instance, you could create levels and upload them on either version, and other people could play them regardless of which version they're playing on. Also, with the wider user base of the 3DS, there'd be more levels getting uploaded. Additionally, you could transfer levels between versions if you owned both. What are your thoughts?
I'm really looking forward to the game in any case, but a 3DS version with inter-connectivity with the Wii U version would be really awesome.
To be honest, I do see Nintendo giving Mario Maker the Hyrule Warriors treatment. Will it work? I don't see why it shouldn't, seeing as the 3DS should be able to handle all the sprites and designs, no matter how much content a particular level contains. You could even set a world(a set of levels) to StreetPass with other users on the fly.
Do I want to see Nintendo do this? I really think Nintendo has to support the Wii U with all it has, and, obviously, a Mario Maker for 3DS would sell bucketloads.
That's true. I hadn't thought about Streetpass features. And while we're at it, if Nintendo is looking to get into the mobile market, I think they could even do a Mario Maker app for tablets and smartphones where you could go ahead and design the level wherever you are, upload it to like a personal level cache, and then download and play test it later on at home on Wii U or 3DS.
It would certainly be a better fit for the 3DS, but we'll see. The one "major" problem I'd see would be having to switch out the NSMBU assets with the NSMB2 ones. It MIGHT happen, but not sure how Nintendo feels about it.
People are complaining Mario Maker isn't a real game but are now saying they want it ported to the 3DS, strange.
I have heard literally no one say that.
And the people wanting a 3DS port and these people apparently saying this isn't a real game are obviously not the same people.
I'm pretty sure I've seen @iKhan who has posted in this thread call it a budget eshop title and doesn't see it as a big release before.
There's a difference between wanting to see something get a full retail release and for it to get a port. Also, you assume that because something isn't a real game, people don't necessarily want it - not always true.
Having a direct port i.e. the identical game as the one for Wii U would have its obvious advantages (only question is about NSMBU), but I would personally want to see them incorporate 2D Mario games from portable systems, specifically the GameBoy games i.e. Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, the original New Super Mario Bros. for the DS and New Super Mario Bros. 2 from the 3DS. This would perfectly reflect the four-game ratio that Super Mario Maker has.
Now, it might be awkward about the Land games, seeing as they weren't Miyamoto projects and they do differ quite a bit from the standard 2D Mario outings we've come to know and love. So, if this is deemed impossible (which I assume it is, but you never know with Nintendo), then I could only suggest using the NES game styles that are already in Super Mario Maker instead, namely the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. This way they can fill in the four styles... I mean, we already have those games on the 3DS Virtual Console anyway (really wish we could've gotten SNES VC though ).

Whelp, I never said that so don't look at me!
@Goginho That would actually be an interesting idea, although I'm not sure how it'd work what with Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2 having such different art styles (far out vs. zoomed in). As for NSMB though, I'd think they could use the NSMB2 art style and just have it change to NSMBU when transferred to Wii U while using the exact same stage data.

Because that's exactly what it looked like last year. Now it has 100 premade levels and boatloads of new possibilities. That said, even if I had a Wii U I personally wouldn't pay $60 for any 2D platformer, let alone a Mario one with terrible controls galore. But for $40 on 3DS, count me in.

Because a lower price changes the "terrible controls".

No, but being a 2D Platformer that could have existed on the N64 or Gamecube should influence price.
Terrible controls just deters me from 2D Mario games in general.

What terrible controls? Mario can turn on a dime.
The only Mario game to ever have bad controls was the original.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Why are people assuming it'll cost less on the 3DS?
Thinking about it aside from the new Yoshi game which came with an Amiibo my last 3 3DS games I got retail (STEAM, Zelda: Majora's Mask & Pokemon AS) which cost around the £26-29 were more than my last 3 Wii U games (Splatoon, Captain Toad & Rayman Legends) which were £15-£23 and aside from Rayman they were all pretty much day one buys.

NSMB2's art style was, I think, a new and unique art style suited for the 3DS' 3D visuals. I'm very sure the 3DS should be able to handle the NSMBWii/U art style, albeit at low resolution. If not... then NSMB2's art style will be a unique selling point for a 3DS Mario Maker.
God first.
