Wii u will fail. That is a given. The other two consoles are ALSO in danger of failing, but they haven't yet. Flailing, really. Give it another month and we will see dthe real trends after the hyper initial sales.
However, here's the good news.
Nintendo is going to make it a memorable failure, like the Gamecube. They are doubling down on the Gamepad, as it is too late to drop it. Also, nintendo gives people saying "Go third party! Go mobile!" The middle finger. Iwata, you've made the right choice. Now we wait in anticipation for the games, and for your QOL platform.

What exactly do you mean by fail? Because the Gamecube was able to turn a profit and many would argue had the best first party software lineup of Nintendo's history. At this point, we're well beyond hoping that the Wii U will pull Wii numbers or even glory day numbers, but it's still too early to call it a failure. If nothing else, the technology in the Wii U will probably serve as a foundation for their next console. Dual screen gaming and motion controls are here to stay.

This is actually good news. The Wii U is a failure, especially coupled with HD game development costs. If this was a doom thread, I wouldn't be celebrating. Iwata just restored my confidence in Nintendo for the future.
That is really good news.

Well, according to its earnings report, it did manage a profit from April-Dec., tho it sounded like it would have problems sustaining it through March due to "seasonal" buying patterns or something like that...... I think it will end up being a profitable console at least. Will be interesting to see how much it sells from Jan.- March, then after Mario Kart. Would hope that they get Smash Bros. out before Nov., but maybe that's a good time to strategically release a title like that for selling systems.....

I think Nintendo will support the Wii U for 4~5 years, and it will sell between 10-20 million units, putting it behind the Gamecube, but above the Saturn / Dreamcast.

I guess that's what it's on pace to do- I divided the total sales by 14 and then multiplied it by 48 and came up with roughly 19m... As I mentioned above, it will be interesting to see what they do through March, then again with Mario Kart. Next Christmas will be crucial as the main sellers will almost all be out (I'm assuming Zelda U won't come out till next year at this time).

I wouldn't consider the Wii U a failure yet? Its near dire but not failure levels yet. Buy I wouldn't call the PS4 or Xbox One potential failures when they both have bug games coming.

Yeah, I'm guessing Super Smash Bros. will be that big AAA Nintendo game for October / November, and I still think they may be waiting to unveil a new game at E3 which may be released in the 2014 fall / Xmas season. Agree with you that although Zelda U will probably be unveiled at this years E3, I don't think it will be coming out until 2015 (especially with Hyrule Warriors out this year).

The Wii U faces pretty stiff competition from Microsoft and Sony, so, not to be a pessimist, but I don't think we will be seeing any huge surge in sales like the 3DS, I think we will see spikes during the release of AAA Nintendo titles and during the fall/Xmas shopping season, but thats about it.

The way I see it, if the Wii U falls into obscurity, but Nintendo lives on, us Wii U owners can enjoy loads of gems the rest of the gaming world won't know about.

It'll be our gaming secret.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

I still refuse to believe Nintendo can fail after what should have been an impossible recovery with 3DS. Not that it matters who fails since the "failure" of last generation, PS3, is the only one of the previous generation anyone still cares about (and not even in the "focused on new consoles" way, I mean 360 is now seemingly remembered as the multi-console games, everything wrong with AAA gaming console, and we need some time before people can admit how wrong they were about Wii's titles).

I don't think we can say anything about Wii U until Mario Kart. It could literally change everything for the console, it is their first true, REAL killer app for sales, for better or worse.

The 3DS was never selling as badly as the Wii U, and it's high price and lack of games were fixed by Christmas so it never had a poor holiday season. The Wii U has now had two awful Decembers and it's quite a different situation to the 3DS. I've been fairly optimistic about it turning around with Mario Kart, but now I'm not so sure. I think it's now safe to say the third parties are done with the console, and Nintendo already seem spread too thin between Wii U and 3DS, and now they're going to be working on this QOL platform too. Are they really going to be able to produce enough games to keep the interest up on their own?

I know forum-users are not representative of the masses, but a lot of people are now just waiting until the hardware price crashes. With 4-5 great games a year, they can just wait for the console to die off and then pick one up for dirt cheap and play through the 15-20 must have titles that have built up.
