My thoughts on this in a nutshell, a list of the big games coming out in the next few months or so here in Aussieland:
PS4: Mortal Kombat X, The Witcher 3, Arkham Knight
XBOne: Mortal Kombat X, The Witcher 3, Arkham Knight
PC: Mortal Kombat X, The Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, GTAV (probably)
Wii U: Kirby, Mario Party, Splatoon, Yoshi (probably)
I am pretty sick of all of the backseat businessing, of which I was occasionally a part of, on these forums. Doesn't it make more sense to talk about games and game design? Do we really care 4-8 thread's worth about Nintendo's bottom line?
Speaking for myself, there isn't currently much game discussion on this forum I want to engage in. XCX is becoming excessively spoilery and the Zelda board is like a broken record. Most games I play are at least a couple of years old, and NL doesn't support legacy game discussion well at all. The only game I really want to talk about is Splatoon.
I like speaking of the business of it all, and that's most of what I really find worth talking about.
By the way, have you actually played either an Xbox or playstation? They are nothing like that. The only games advertised that way, are some of the big AAA releases. Not every game on non Nintendo consoles is dark and mature. Ever heard of ratchet and clank? Tearaway? Little big planet? Jak and Daxter? Viva pinata? How about jrpgs? Nintendo does NOT make the only games with cartoons graphics.
Have critics played Nintendo's systems? They have more than Mario, Zelda and Pokemon
Exactly. It works both ways.
Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

Nothing wrong with their image. They just need to stop with the gimmicks and make a console that can compete with MS and Sony. Sadly I dont see this happening.
I don't think Nintendo's image in the problem. It's more their approach. The Wii U IS underpowered, and they haven't justified the use of the gamepad. What happened to the good old days when all players could have the same controller? If I could hook up 4 gamepads to the Wii U, it would be much less of a problem.
As much as Nintendo's main focus is families right now, they could use some of the more mature titles to balance things out. I'm not saying make the next Call of Duty, but they could certainly use better storytelling in their existing titles. I'm getting tired of feeling like I'm seeing only a tiny part of the picture when I play Zelda, or that a much more interesting story happened behind the scenes.
And as for the Nintendo Directs. It's a genius idea, but they need more of it. More engaging content that doesn't treat the entire audience like children, because we're not. Even Disney has grown up with it's audience with things like the new Star Wars, The Avengers, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Meanwhile the franchises that WOULD appease these audiences get ignored, like Metroid.
@Neoproteus
People forget that PowerPC and ×86 are different types of computer architecture. It's quite silly. Wii U is actually the newest and most modern PowerPC console on the market right now, AFAIK. That means that saying it is underpowered, compared to any other console, is like saying your toaster toasts stuff better than your microwave, in which case, I would say, "No s***".

Which just means that PowerPC architecture as a whole is outdated. The point still stands. Being the best rotary phone on the market is not bragging rights when people use touch screens now.

From backseat business people to backseat game designers?
Well we all have experience playing games and know our tastes to some extent. That and relatively few MBAs I'd assume so, yeah, I think talking about, critiquing, and sharing our hopes for games would be the far more interesting topic.

Business is not really something you need experience in to discuss and critique. A lot of start ups come from people with no experience at all.
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

Contrary to belief, mature work can be kid-friendly. Gravity Falls isn't an adult show, but I consider that show mature because it's smart, well written, doesn't talk down to kids, and is allowed to be itself, as opposed to pandering to what executives THINK kids want. Why is there this notion that in order to be a mature game, it has to be kept away from kids?

Sure, whatever you say.
They do. There are several people at my university who just made a start up with a good idea. In the field I'm studying, a huge percentage of the industry is startups by people who made a major discovery. Business is a bit like ethics, you don't need expertise to have a valid discussion of it.

...You do realize that Nintendo is hardly a start up business, right?

I'm not saying they are, but start-ups are good evidence that business acumen doesn't require one to study business. Hell, neither Iwata nor Miyamoto have business degrees, and they are RUNNING Nintendo, not casually discussing sales.
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Nothing against Playstation and Xbox's approach, but Nintendo is fine doing what their doing now with more family friendly games. I'd like to see Nintendo make more Teen/Mature rated titles(for ex. bring back Metroid, buy the Bayonetta IP?, bring back Eternal Darkness?, bring Fatal Frame outside Japan and make that a niche yet ongoing franchise?)
In a nutshell, Nintendo should keep their current image because it's fine. However a few more games that fall under the "gritty and mature" category wouldn't hurt.

I agree that Nintendo should get more realistic, and gritty games to try and capture the "core gamer". But as I said earlier, Maturity can be kid friendly too. Gravity Falls is kid-friendly, but it's also very mature.

He had a bachelor's in economics and was the director of national marketing for Pizza Hut! That's not the same as being an inexperienced backseat businessman!
