With a new Star Fox on the horizon I'm wondering what the character designs will look like? Specifically for Fox, as his design has drastically changed over the years. I'm bored, let's take a look:
The original SNES Box / promo art! Although Fox didn't look much like this in game, this cover art really sent my imagination soaring!
The classic 64 design. Simple, charming, and retains the puppet style of the SNES box art in a way. Plus, he just looks like a badass. This is my favorite. (This is the Smash version, which is slightly different in body proportions from the Star Fox 64 model.)
The Melee model (which I initially forgot about!). This design is great. Takes the 64 design up quite a few notches. This looks like an older Fox to me. Hardened from Space battles. I think this might be my favorite modern looking Fox design.
The Adventure model was ok. Much more humonoid proportions - less cartoony. The puppet style is pretty much gone. Oddly enough, has a biker feel to it. Very big furry tail!
Aaand the Assault design, which I do not care for. From this point on he starts to look like a cat. And he ditches his trademark jacket for generic "Space-guy" gear.
Ooooh boy, the Command design. By this point Fox Mccloud now looks like a Rescue Ranger. I pretty much hate this design all together.
Here's the Brawl design. Retains the goofy Command head design with a bit more realism. Now Fox uses Google Glass? I like that the outfit is closer to the original design, but dem boots.... They just look goofy. This design carries over to the new Wii U Smash as well.
Aaand we get a revival of the 64 design all smoooooothed out for 64 3D. I'm totally happy with this design. Although I think the 64 models are perfect in their own right, I understand we must move forward (as the majority of gamers do not like the look of obvious polygons.)
You forgot the Melee design. That one is probably my favorite, with Assualt and Adventures coming next, respectively. I understand that you like the puppet type design, but that doesn't bother me.

I didn't include any Smash iterations, but I think you're right the Melee version was pretty sweet! I'll toss it in.
EDIT: And after revisiting it, man this one might be my favorite! Fox looks awesome here! Where did the designers go wrong after this title!?!?!

I just figured it should count, because N64 Fox was technically in in Smah 64.

Ya, the fur is what really made the Adventure model really good. It's a shame they can't do that in the new Smash game for Wii U, even for DK(Smash Wii U DK vs.Tropical Freeze DK).

When it comes to StarFox, I prefer pretty much everything from Assault - from the designs over the gameplay to the story and voice acting!
I didn't like his original designs, since they looked so bland to me. The fur looks dirty and wild, and Fox generally looks to animalistic.
The Adventures design is good, but lacks a bit of profile and color. Something like different pants coloring might've helped fleshen him out.
Command looks too deformed, and I hate when the leg prosthesis is visible, since it doesn't match Fox general proportions at all.
The Brawl design is okay, since it looks rather mature, but I think those... sideburns (for lack of a better word) make his head look too big in relation to his body.
If they wanna change the style (again), they should make Fox a bit sleeker again. His latest designs all decidedly make him more bulky to create a better contrast to Falco (since he's pretty much everywhere with Fox by now), but Falco would be better off just being taller than Fox.
And we really need proper plot involvement. The plot up until Assault was great, but Command rushed way too far with its multiple endings, and now there's a gap between the two that is almost impossible to use, since the general direction is already given by Command (in one way or another). Command's place in the canon is questionable to many fans, anyway, and I think that while the story isn't bad, they need to drop it since it eliminated so much potentail for stuff after Assault.
Gotta say, I'm pretty fond of the Assault and Adventures designs. There's something about the Melee and classic designs that make him look like a total BAMF, though. Really anything but the Command design is pretty awesome.
It is a tie between Assault and Command for me (my two favorite Star Fox games)
I like how Bad-Ace the Assault version looks but the Command one is pretty cute
I also like how Smash 4's Fox looks
Wait Command is either your favorite or second-favorite Star Fox game but it was such a mess.
What do you mean, it is so much fun.
I didn't really like it that much, but it wasn't a mess. I just didn't like how simple the levels were. The strategy map was cool, but it was hard for me to do it well sometimes, because the strategy would fail long after there was no return.
Overall, it wasn't a mess, but it wasn't my type of game.
EDIT: Also, after seeing them all side by side, I'd have to say the Brawl/Smash Wii U and Assault designs are my favorite. They just got way more detailed, but Adventures definately deserves props for the fur.

Well nearly every story was terrible, final bosses were meh, eventually most missions boiled down to that lame fog of war nonsense, levels felt tiny, stopping missile sections became monotonous due to them being so easy, the one redeeming feature I can think of was multiplayer. The game wasn't terrible but execution was definitely messy in most areas.
@Jazzer94
I agree. Fundamentally, the game wasn't a mess, but you're right about all the other stuff. Everything was repetitive, and the fog was annoying, but tolerable.
Anyway... since we are expanding this discussion to the games, I liked Assault and Adventures the best. While I realize Adventrues wasn't really a traditional Starfox game, it was still a good game.
