Topic: Retro Studios should make more games

I don't care about any rebuttal to this, Nintendo should find some way to get Retro to make ALL THE GAMES. Just do it! Limiting them to one real project at a time is a waste. It would be like if Rare only made Banjo and Goldeneye and nothing else on N64. Seriously, just one game every couple of years? The team is so talented, we can let them have more right?

Retro looks to have lost their ability or drive to make epic games. Dk tropical Freeze proves this. After being involved in the development of the last two dk game release they decided they still needed to do more.

It's sad because this is a western developer thst used to develop gsmes tailored to the wants and needs of western audiences, something Nintendo desperately needs, now it's reduced to a side scrolling developer with no creativity or imagination.

...Um, Retro only developed 1 DK game...

It also developed the additional levels and Content added to the 3ds version of the game. I think they also helped with the port.

You're looking at it from the wrong angle. That Retro Studios is making another DKC title is actually a really smart move. They are building on the success of the first two titles to encourage fans of those games to buy a Wii U. DKC Tropical Freeze will reach a wider audience than a Metroid game would.

Keep in mind a few things:

1. Games require more resources and take longer to make now. Retro's not that big a company, I'm not sure how many HD games they could handle at any one time. There's a reason even many major companies don't have tons of games in development any more.

2. Nothing says Retro Studios is limited to one project at a time. Never been stated as far as I can tell, and some rumours exist that they're working on more than one thing right now.

Metroid, Star Fox, and especially F-Zero do need new titles in their series. Retro usually goes for BIG products, like Metroid Prime Trilogy, it had amazing animation, gameplay, and music, so it probably took a while to build those games up. It may even be possible that Retro is handed the sci-fi titles, Nintendo works on everything else, and both Retro and Nintendo share DK. More games from Retro would be great.

Yeah it's disappointing that such a talented studio was only doing DK I love Donkey Kong but you can tell Nintendo played it safe and just wanted to sell Hardware Units! Retro should of been doing Metroid as well while Nintendo should get Star Fox to platinum games!

Ok, this point of view has been bugging me for a while. What do you mean by "only doing DK"? Donkey Kong Country was a huge hit back in the day and the revival was met with a lot of praise. What makes it such a small endeavor that would cause this sort of reaction? How would another Metroid be any different? Also, Nintendo is not in any position to be experimenting. They need to get that install base on Wii U posthaste, so they need to stick with the games they know will sell more and Metroid isn't one of them at the moment.

I agree that a DK game from them is a bit of a let down but you can't just say that they lost their drive.
The fact is that the Metroid games were really good but they didn't sell that well. If gamers want developers to make great games and not play it safe then they should speak with their wallets.

Don't forget that quite a few of the Metroid Prime people from Retro left and are now making Halo games........

I'm also baffled by the hate towards Tropical Freeze. Why is it assumed that it won't appeal to the "core" gamer?

It's not like gamers will confuse it for some sort of kid targeted shovelware, as Donkey Kong is an iconic franchise that every gamer recognizes. Furthermore, the DKC games have always been notorious for their difficulty, which is what the "core" gamer wants, right.

I've even seen the notion thrown around that it's somehow less of a game than Metroid, Star Fox, or F-Zero because it's a sidescroller instead of a 3D game, which is complete malarkey. Some of the best (and most successful) games this past gen have been sidescrollers (yes, including DKCR).

I can understand if it's simply not the series you'd personally like to had Retro focus on, but to say it's not a series that "core" gamers get excited about is absolutely ludicrous.

Didn't another person leave Retro last week to join Armature?

Some people have been leaving Retro, yes. However the studio have expanded a lot and talent from studios such as Naughty Dog, Crytek and Vigil Games have been acquired. I would say that Retro has more talent now than ever before, remember that they were able to do the original Metroid Prime basically just being a mashup of old Acclaim / Iguana devs.

I think that the Metroid Prime-series went in the wrong direction and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption felt more as a Killzone / Halo blend then the one-ma..woman adventure that its supposed to be. But I cant deny that it is a very good game. Donkey Kong Country Returns is super-slick. So much fun, and definetely a game for the core-gamer. Man.. i have died more times on that game then on any Demons Souls or Dark Souls game.

I dont think that Retro Studios ever will become a new Rare outside of being a dev that takes on already established Nintendo-franchises, with one obvious being Donkey Kong Country. I dont think that Retro will produce several games a year and especially not develop so much new franchises that Rare actually did.
Not only because it is just not possible, the scale and development costs and development time are not the same today as it was during the 1990s, but also because they are simply not Rare. I think it has proven more efficient for Nintendo to collobrate with third-party studios such as Monster Games, Next Level Games, TT Fusion and so on to bring out that kind of content.

I completely agree.
It seems as if some were expecting too much from them. Especially since it was reported that they had undergone a lot of staffing changes. I can understand disappointment from ppl that wanted a new Metroid game, but all this talk about new IPs and whatnot was unrealistic if you look at what Retro had done in the past.
