Nintendo does a lot of stuff, but... it can take hints. It's like with Xenoblade which eventually came to the U.S. and now X is coming to the U.S, from the start.
Retro was founded for 'mature' games initially, and they haven't forgotten that. They really need to expand the user base and it's great to use the franchises more often - DKCR SHOULD be an annual game, why not... this is their appeal.
But it can take hints. Everyone wanted Metroid Prime 4 or some other big project, and I'm sure right now they're all sitting there in Texas video conferencing with Japan and discussing the timeline for that game to come out in 2014-2015.
