Anyone else notice Nintendo is rocking a lot of women in their new games? I really picked up on it this E3, especially in comparison to Sony and Microsoft's showings which were possibly 99% male oriented. I can't remember one memorabe female character from Sony's conference... Meanwhile, Nintendo is repping Palutena, Rosalina, Samus, Peach, Zelda, Daisy, Wii Fit Trainer, and Splatoon which looked to possibly be a complete female roster? Anyways, I just wanted to point out that whether this is intentional or not I think this is very important to gaming! While I may be confused by Ninty's decision making from time to time, I gotta give them credit for working to make gaming appealing to everyone, and giving women their due space in games. That's it, back to watching the Smash tourney!
Yeah, I think Splatoon has 2 male and 2 female, the males just look effeminate (like Marth from FE). But it's true Nintendo seems to be showing a little more balance in the male/female ratio. X even allows the main character to be female if you want. And you forgot Bayonetta TC!
Either way, it's kind of cool that's happening. And the female reps actually seem cool/intelligent/variable, unlike shoe-horned females like Sarah
Palin lol. Heck even the new Laura Croft just seems to conform to overused fem-fetal archetype that seems to be feminism's answer to lack of females in gaming (yeah, because every woman in the world is pretty much a man with female anatomy...oh wait...no they're not! lol).
I didn't even notice this. You're right though. Now that I think about it, Nintendo did have a good amount of screen time with female characters. Nice to see them trying to include everybody.
I don't like singling myself out like this, but as a female consumer, I feel like I've just grown to ignore any sort of bias companies make. I've never had a problem with playing as a guy and I'm quite used to it now, but it's always nice when you have a choice (like in Pokemon or Mass Effect or something of that nature) or to see female characters present and represented. So kudos to Nintendo for keeping it real and giving everybody some spotlight.
EDIT: Nintendo is trying to reach to fans that the other two companies are often ignoring. Good move.
To be honest, I don't even know if I want female characters in most of the Sony and Microsoft games. They're just 90% generic action games with small adjustments. Adding female characters to those types of games doesn't really do anything for good gender roles. Let them stick with their brainless muscular white guy.
Um, are you really bringing up a fighting game here, where most of the female characters are, and Splatoon is a silly example. You also should remember that The Order 1886, Uncharted, and other Sony games will have Women in them, and really, a fighting game is seriously reaching for "Nintendo has more women than Sony and MS."
