They've been effectively exclusive for some time. It's worth noting they are still an independent company. That means they choose to focus on their mutual relationship with Nintendo.
Not surprising considering every game Nintendo has published from them has broken 1 million sales. Don't think for a second they would refuse an extremely lucrative offer from another publisher, though.

Pretty much what ACK said. I hope they're making a new Star Fox or Metroid, preferably for Wii U.
Give Starfox or Metroid to Platinum Games, just 'cause it would be interesting to see what they'd do with it, and then the other one to Retro Studios.
Next Level Games really really should do a Mario Strikers Charged follow up on Wii U. Mario Strikers Charged was an absolutely phenomenal game, and the Wii U could use some soccer love now that EA pulled the plug on future FIFA titles.

Star Fox would be great, but I think Next Level could absolutely nail a new Star Tropics vibe. The style and humor is right up their alley, it's a western-oriented concept, and LM2 proved they can bring the classic gameplay interesting places. Hell, they could use the Dark Moon engine, straight up.
Next Level has shown a knack for reviving quirky, ignored Nintendo IP. Star Tropics by them just seems too perfect.
Though I am still waiting for them to find finally make another hockey game someday... Nintendo systems rarely receive decent hockey titles. Considering their Canadian heritage and Hitz pedigree, Next Level must have some desire to fix this injustice. Please do.
Platinum Games = Star Fox for the Wii U
Retro = Metroid for the Wii U
Monster Games = A new racing IP for the Wii U, something akin to Beetle Adventure Racing, gameplay wise.
SEGA / Sumo Digital = F-Zero for the Wii U
Next Level Games = A 3D Wario platformer for the 3DS
I would love if they worked their reviving skills on another retro game like Ice Climber or Balloon Fight. I also wouldn't mind if they made a new Mario Strikers for Wii U.
I would be pretty pi$$ed if they wasted their efforts on the Ice Climber or Ballon Fight IP's (which nobody knows about outside of core Nintendo fans)......just my opinion.

I think it'd be awesome if they made a Mario Hockey game similar to that of Strikers. I remember playing Strikers on Gamecube and being pleasantly surprised by it, but I haven't played any since. I'd definitely buy a Strikers if it came out on Wii U, but I'd actually be more enthusiastic if they made a Hockey game in the same vein as Strikers. That's just me though, Hockey is the only sport that I really like. American Football is OK sometimes..
As far as people saying that Platinum should do Star Fox or Metroid, I think the best match for them would actually be F-Zero. I don't know why, but I just think they could do something amazing with it. Probably because they are really good at making fast-paced, reflexed based gaming. Retro should stick with Metroid. I don't know who should get Starfox, I loved the N64 version but the last two games haven't interested me in the slightest. Here's hoping that whatever Next Level is working on now is slated for a Wii U release.

Those titles really seem like they would be better suited to remakes a la Wii U eShop titles, though I may just be lacking imagination. They just have that arcade feel to them that makes it hard to imagine as full priced retail games. However, the same could be said about the origins of Mario and Donkey Kong, haha!

WHAT!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?! Ice Climbers are just like Marth was until some time ago they are "those guys from Smash Bros." everyone knows them because people who aren't core Nintendo fans know the characters on the box(not by name just by looks) I think the reaction would be like "look! it's the game of that couple from Smash Bros. let's get it to see what it is about!"

Next Level brought back Punch-Out and then brought back Luigi's Mansion. I even recall them saying last year that they are "the masters of reviving forgotten franchises". So I'm guessing whatever they're working on now might be another franchise that hasn't seen the light of day for quite a while. But Nintendo has a lot of franchises that haven't had new installments in a while, so it's still anyone's guess.
