This is true, but there's always the chance of another first person Metroid game, without the word Prime in the title.
If they see value in it, then there's a good chance it could be made in the future... even if that's not by Retro Studios.

If you throw money they will come.

But yeah i'm sure we'll see Retro's next game at E3 and i'm going with any of these.

Star Tropics
Star Fox
Raven Blade
whole new IP

Going by current job postings and comments it seems that they have had the Wii-U dev kits before EAD tokyo got them.

WAT!

How could Retro have dev kits before Nintendo's own internal teams? The system was designed in Japan. What did Nintendo do, ship the dev kits to America without letting EAD try them out?

And I HIGHLY doubt StarTropics will ever be revived. The game isn't well remembered. Though I said the same thing about Kid Icarus, and now we have a new 3DS game. The only reason that 3DS game exists is because Pit was in Smash Bros. Brawl. So who knows what will happen... Maybe Nintendo will put the kid from StarTropics in the next Smash Bros. and thus revive interest in the series.

A 2D Metroid isn't happening on Wii U, so it has to happen on 3DS.

Got any proof of that? Right now, all we are talking about is speculation. I remember when no one thought Nintendo would bring back Donkey Kong Country, or make a new sidescrolling Mario game for home consoles, yet both of those happened on the Wii. Nintendo can be very unpredictable at times, so don't underestimate them.

It's common sense. Other M didn't sell too well, so Nintendo probably wants to play it safe for the next game. A 2D Metroid for a handheld won't need a lot of resources to develop and will satisfy most fans. Once the series is back on its feet, Nintendo will no doubt want to invest in a full-scale console Metroid that takes advantage of the Wii U's power.

BTW, Retro Studios is one of Nintendo's own first-party teams.

Retro is overrated. Intelligent Systems is where it's at. I'd love to see them make another Metroid game.

They can do anything. Remember Super Metroid?

Retro is an internal studio.

Also factor that during the time that the dev kit's were first made Retro had just got done with DCKR while EAD was still heavy into devlopment of SS,SM3DL, and Mario Kart 7.

That and there are at 7 teams in EAD. So i'm guessing the galaxy team could be working on something.

Though I agree with Startropics. though a bigger reason were getting Uprising is due to Sakurai liking the character and nintendo giving him free range as long as he makes Smash games.

There's a good chance that while they didn't get the controller they most likely got the first Gen Dev kits (using a classic controller for input)

EAD didn't get dev kits until December of last year/January of this year and they were able to put out NSMBM and the mini games.

How do you know that? Do you have inside sources or something?

Nintendo said countless times that the games shown for the Wii U were just tech demos, but I wouldn't be surprised if NSMB Mii was a real game (and a launch title hopefully).

But Other M didn't meet expectations. At all. If you check the NPD charts it only sold 500,000 in the first few months. The goal was 1 million. I can see a 2-D Metroid being on 3DS and some sort of an idea on Wii U, but an Other M 2 ? No way Jose.

i'd not want another 'other M' type game for the wii U. more like prime but with the extra features that i mentioned such as being able to attack enemies by punching, kicking them. not just shooting them with the arm cannon.

I'll buy it as long as it doesn't resemble Other M, but I think they should at least try a third-person game. The FPS view limits what kind of platforming is possible, and a lot of Samus's upgrades would be really awkward in first-person.

i was thinking 3rd person for the 3DS game and 1st person for the wii U game. yet it will be partly 3rd person as well.

i prefer 3rd person side scrolling metroid; super metroid, fusion and zero mission most.

All the hate on Other M still makes me grumble. If this game had been a 3DS title without the motion controls, it would have been game of the year. Period.

Grr.

But back on topic here, yes, I think 3rd person for the portables and first for the home consoles would be a cool idea. I'm all for that.

What? The controls were the last thing wrong with Other M.

I just think people act silly about the story. It's a great narrative and a different look at the actual human side of a beloved character who seemed like a cyborg before they gave her a voice. I still hold strong to my opinion that in ten years, Other M will be an "underrated classic." But I'm not trying to start a flame war about the game. It just irritates me about all the hate it gets because it dared to have the hero be anything less than a gun-toting hellcat.

Then there's the secondary complaints: Too linear, clunky controls, and unmemorable bosses. Nintendo has established that linear works in portable games since Zero Mission and Fusion are two of the most beloved games of the series. The clunky controls would have been eliminated had Other M been a 3DS title. Slap a few more epic bosses on this baby and it would have made a great 3DS game IF you're willing to embrace and enjoy the dark and emotional story that comes with it like I did.

Third-person wouldn't work on 3DS unless it used the circlepad add-on for aiming, and it's been too long since the last 2D Metroid.

First of all, the story is a very, very minor complaint. It's a lazy rehash of Fusion's, and that's not the kind of thing that ruins a game (IMO, at least).

The story isn't why Other M is hated. The gameplay and game design are by far the worst in any major Nintendo game.

Of course, most people ignore that and go back to defending the story.

of which we can blame team ninja for that. as i said in one of the metroid threads here, i hope they don't get involved with the metroid franchise. i didn't hate other M entirely- it was a good game, but NOT a metroid game.

Well, yeah, I know that lots of people hate the story, but the story isn't the problem. If Other M had a better plot, the actual game wouldn't be any less terrible. If the game was genuinely good, a bad story wouldn't drag it down.

In some case, story is just as important as gameplay. Story is what spurs the player to progress through the game. Black Ops had a terrible story, and there were many times when I just wanted to quit the game.

On the other hand, I love the Uncharted series mainly for the story, character animation, and voice acting. It makes for a more cinematic experience. The actual gameplay is pretty repetitive, though. God of War blends story and gameplay pretty well, IMO.

@tendoboy1984: You're missing the point. Regardless of how great or awful Other M's story is, the game is terrible.
