I found out/was told I'm getting a WiiU for Christmas.
Along with Xenoblade X.
I know I need a Hard Drive.
I went to Ninty's website and everything they recommended are all discontinued.
I need a powered Hard Drive. Can I please get some recommendations from you all?
I recently got a hard drive so here's something essential to know: if you get one that doesn't need to be plugged in externally, you need to get a Y-cable because simply plugging it in to the Wii U doesn't provide enough power for it to work. It needs power from both USB ports.
I didn't know this until I already got my hard drive and I had to wait a few more days for my Y-cable to ship.
Sorry that this isn't a recommendation. Can't remember what brand mine is off the top of my head.
I've been recommended WD external HDD's. I've got one for my Xbone, but have read that they work just as well with the Wii U (and I've loved mine for my bone).
I sometimes hate how things turn out when doing the right thing, but I've never regretted trying.
WD hard drives do have an externally powered line but honestly I've just been using a 128GB flash drive. Works fine for me.

You won't need a hard drive for Xenoblade X if you have the disc version. If you have the premium/deluxe/black WiiU you can even download the datapacks into the internal storage. And even without the disc version and just a basic/white WiiU you can play the game with just a 32GB-USB stick.
However, most hard drives work with the WiiU. I use a 10 years old HDD with 160 GB. Enough for me and it works fine!
Did you read the OP?
Everything that is listed on Ninty's Supprt page has all been discontinued if favour of new models.
I was wondering which of the new models will work.

I already purchased my HDD and didn't know I needed extra power support. It's a SATA to USB. Is there a way to remedy this? A USB to Y USB adapter? Or...?

@Chandlero: ...so why not just take a chance on a new HDD, and if it doesn't work with your Wii U, have that one become your new computer HDD. Sure, you'll have to shuffle around several gigabytes, but at least you'd have a setup you're confident in.
