Where did @Bankai go?

Apparently he was banned, looking at his profile. Funny, though, I thought he said he was going on vacation to Japan or something like that. If so, maybe it was a self-ban? Honestly, I don't know. Not the slightest clue.

Well, "Wii U" certainly isn't making anything better...

The name isnt a big deal imo.
Although "Super Wii" just sounds weird.

Yeah, I just found out he was banned earlier this week. Really dissapointing, as I was wondering how his trip to Japan was going.

3. YOU SHOULD HAVE FOCUSED ON CASUALS FIRST
Nintendo made it very apparent that they wanted to focus on the hardcore this time. But seeing how things have gone, I really think Nintendo should have started off the casuals. Why? For one thing, only casual gamer would be satisfied with the Wii U in its current state. Party games are not a dedicated gamer's cup of tea. Also, while hardcore gamer's are easier to figure out, they are harder to win over. Hardcore gamers want big stuff quickly. Plus they'd probably wait to see what Sony or Microsoft had to offer first. This is why Nintendo should have started with the masses. Casuals still like the Wii, and once they are probably educated, they like the Wii U too. Plus there are more of them, so the could have been buying the Wii U while Nintendo got its big games ready. But unfortunately, Nintendo got to caught up with trying to win over a stubborn group at launch, and now, not only do they need to give hardcore gamers a reason to buy the console, but they also need to help the masses realize it is a NEW console. If I were Nintendo, I would have launched a massive marketing campaign following E3, properly explaining to the masses what a Wii U is. How Iwata did not expect people to get confused by the name AND bad commercials is beyond me.

This would be great for their launch.
The problem is that this is what they did with the Wii and it ultimately hurt them

Yeah. But I am sure the Wii U could get good games faster than the Wii did. It just would have been nice if more people knew about the console prior to launch. Now they can't really market it until after E3.

And here I thought this thread would be about how Smash Bros should have been at launch.

I used to travel the stars, then I discovered Earth, and these incredibly addicting things called 'Video Games.'
And they said you couldn't buy happiness!

That must be some great holiday to Japan... He must have his WiiU and Mass Effect 3 with him right now

The price point would have been 400$-500$ in 2011. Not viable, seeing as Nintendo had the 3DS' success to circumvent any issues with a 2012 launch. PS3 / 360 price points haven't changed enough in the last 18 months to justify an earlier release.
An October release would have been nice, giving Nintendo a nice launch with enough time to build to the Xmas rush.
NSMBU was a great platformer and a terrific game to encourage the influx of strong indie titles.
The casuals need to know this is a completely new console, yes, but that their Wiis are still relevant.
PS4 and 720 talking about 0 backwards compatibility hurts the gamers who have spent hundreds on controllers, games and accessories.
Btw, they need to ship with HDMI. No more of the graphics first bs and 0 HDMI. Its ludicruous for Sony to push 3D and super HD without a day one inclusive HDMI cable.
Wii adapters still use their Wii cables for SD Wii U gaming and that's their business.
Nintendo, major props for the included HDMI cable.
The name might seem stupid to the avid fans, but 'Nintendo' was on both the 64 and Gamecube with resoundingly low sales.
Eliminating Wii might help the most pretentious of gamers, but the fact Nintendo has been absent since launch is killing the Wii U more than the name ever could.
Proof? Between Nintendoland and NSMBU, there are over 4 million games floating around out there.
And yes, you can count the bundled game in those sales. It's a significant amount of money added on in order to have a game in the box.
Nintendo needs more first party games out. That's it.
Sales will pick up when they do hit.
MH3 proved it on Wii U. Fantasy Life and New Leaf proved it in Japan for the 3DS.
It will happen. We're all just too invested in the future of Sony and Microsoft to think with any optimism about Nintendo.
Honestly, I haven't seen any PS4 / 720 exclusive games that give me the same sensation that Resistance (i.e.) gave me when I saw the PS3 launch titles.
I like Nintendo's upcoming games, their chances and the experience the Wii U offers.

I think that after coming off the Gamecube, and having such a quick rise with the Wii the bust was deffinitly an eye opener for Nintendo.
The bust was a good thing as the posatives from the after affects are now quite obvious.
Nintendo appear to be more accommodating to indie dev's by giving them better working t & c's, plus lifting the download limits on the eShop,
The online abalities of the WiiU are miles ahead of what the Wii had. Extra incentives to play online, lare possible, like the double points weekends that Black Ops has.
Patching games are now alot easier for dev's to send out, and Nintendo are less restrictive of this compared to the Wii.
There are a few things that could improve, but those will happen in time. For now, I just hope Nintendo have set themselves on the right path, because it looks that way.
edit, just to add, I think it's ridiculous to expect Nintendo, Microjsoft, and Sony to keep adding backwards compatability in with their respective consoles. It's more money in the long run for them to develope a new console while having it compatible with the last one, the costs then end up being pushed onto the consumer, making their consoles more expensive. So I woasn't suprised in the least when Sony announced the lack of it with the PS4.
Up to and including the Gamecube gen, if you wanted to play your old games, you had to keep your old consoles.

I agree that the name could've been a bit more creative, and that another NSMB title wasn't the best choice for a launch title. However, I don't think things would've been better if it came out 2011, in fact it likely would have made things worse. Think about it, there would have been even less games to start out with, and the system itself would need even more updates and fixes then it does now.

IMO, the Wii U might have fared better if released a little LATER then its actual date, but like what has been discussed before, Nintendo wanted to get the system out before the competition and during the holiday season, so that's understandable.

Again people, people I know the Wii U in reality wasn't even ready to launch in 2012. But I feel if EVERYTHING HAD been ready by 2011, that would have been best. I think I'll edit that heading.

1. It SHOULD HAVE BEEN READY TO LAUNCH IN 2011

Maybe. Although it would have needed more games to be an immediate success, and that wouldn't have been possible with such an early release date. Heck, part of me suspects the Wii U was really launched too early given the terrible launch lineup we got with it (maybe it should have been delayed until a 3D Mario game, Mario Kart and Pikmin 3 were available).

2. Should Have Called it a Super Wii

Should have called it any name distinguishable from the original Wii more like. I agree, the Wii U branding is too confusing, but Super Wii wouldn't have been the greatest sounding title. Maybe just call it the Revolution or something? Something completely different from the Wii that no one could ever get mixed up with?

3. YOU SHOULD HAVE FOCUSED ON THE MASS MARKET FIRST

True, they should have had games better suited to the mass audience. Personally, I'd say that means 'not Nintendo Land', since the very concept is offputting for a significant amount of people compared to something a bit more... neutral and 'safe' like Wii Sports.

Then again, the best possible situation would probably have been 'hardcore' Nintendo fan game like a new Zelda or 3D Mario alongside an 'expanded audience' focused one like a Wii Sports U or something. Have something that would draw the 'casuals' and something for the Nintendo fans, then market it to the Xbox 360/PS3 crowd later.

4. New Super Mario Bros. U...not the best launch title

I sort of agree, and I sort of don't. On the one hand, a 2D Mario game could have been a great launch title. It's just that the New Super Mario Bros style isn't the kind of 2D Mario game the Wii U needed.

No, it needed a flashy, modern, INNOVATIVE 2D Mario game. Something which blows away all other 2D platformers in graphics (like say Rayman Origins, Wario Land Shake It or Donkey Kong Country Returns style), has an epic orchestrated soundtrack with mostly new themes and has all kinds of new enemies, characters, settings/world themes and items. Something which is quite literally a Super Mario Bros 5 or Super Mario World 2/3.

Above: Like that as the music quality

The real problem isn't that they chose a 2D Mario game, it's that they chose to play that too 'safe' so to speak. New console launch titles are supposed to be leaps and bounds ahead of existing ones on every level, use the consoles power to its fullest and show what NEW things can be done. Not just copy and paste old content and music with a HD upscale of the New Super Mario Bros Wii style.

Of course, a 3D Mario game or a new Zelda title would have sold consoles really well too, but a 2D Mario game could have certainly done so. Super Mario Bros 1, 3 and World did. It's just Nintendo aren't putting the required amount of effort into the 2D Mario games.

Honestly, changing the name won't make that much of a difference. It's how they present it to consumers that counts. The Super Nintendo had this same exact problem back in the 90s (which is why "Super Wii" won't change much). Nintendo failed badly in e3 2011 when they first revealed the Wii U and their marketing isn't much better.
