Is there anything special about gold cartridge Zelda games? Are they rare or something?

Never seen a gray Zelda II, but both the gold and gray version of Zelda I are very common.
(the gold version of Zelda I was an earlier print that lacked the warning to hold Reset while quitting the game to avoid losing save data)
I think the only rare gold Zelda cart is Ocarina of Time.
I think all copies of Majora's Mask were gold. I hear the difference is the label. Supposedly the rarer one has a hologram labal (I think that's what you call it, the kind where the picture changes if you look at it at a different angle).

I had the holographic label, but sold it at a garage sale for a buck.

The original LOZ was a gold cart. They released it along with some other titles (LOZ 2, Metroid) later on in the NES life. The rerelease had a grey cart and is quite a bit more rare. The gold cart is very very common.

I thought the gray release was a later printing, but different than the "Classics" series (with the Classic release having a stamp like "The Classic" or "The Original" or something on the label. I think.).
I do recall back when I got mine that GameStop was charging $5 more for the gold cart than the gray one. I'm going to assume (though I know that's dangerous) they have an idea what they're doing and that the gold is marginally rarer.

Checking ebay for a photo, it seems the Classic version of Zelda II is gray. So, okay. Now I've seen a gray copy of Zelda II. I think the rest are gold.

No, they just know that people would rather have the shiny gold cart.
The gray cart really was significantly more rare.

I don't really know, as this was before my time, but my neighbor has a copy of the original Zelda that is a gray cartridge.

I think the yellow Zelda carts for the NES are the rarest ones, I see them on eBay once in awhile, they're test carts for the service centers. I know the N64 OoT Gold cartridge is a different version of the game than later ones. I saw a video of some guys using a GameShark to find different areas that didn't make it into the final game.

Well, both of my original NES Zelda games are gold cartridges so I don't think so.

In regards to the yellow cases, they're fake. I'm convinced of it. I did a little research and I've yet to see one that doesn't have label damage that doesn't look like it was peeled and reapplied. I mean, this isn't normal wear and tear damage...they're phonies.

Anyways, both of my Zeldas are gold, those were the production run cases for a number of years. I remember the gray Zelda 1 but never for 2.

Go to www.digitpress.com , they have a rarity guide. Both Zelda 1 and 2 gold cartridges are very common, I can tell you that without looking at the guide.

@J Bitties: I dunno about all the yellow ones being fake, I mean, sure, there are some that look quite obviously fake, like this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-Yellow-Legend-of-Zelda-Nintendo-NES-...
looks like someone painted it and did a bad job, it has bubbles from the paint, yet for some odd reason, people are bidding. Weirdos.
Then there are ones that don't make me question its validity, such as
http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/ebay-watch-rar...
I mean, I get your point, but even if 90% of the ones out are bad fakes, it doesn't mean they're all fakes, they were test cartridges afterall, if someone bothers to go through the trouble of faking one, you'd think they'd make sure all the corners were glued down.
Then again, the possibility is that I'm completely wrong since I'm not an NES collector. That current one on auction looks so fake though, haha.

Just gonna' jump in and point out that the rarer version of Majora's Mask is actually the one with the sticker as opposed to the lenticular image.

Bacon, RPG elements and cute girls, what more could you want?

nix

i remeber OOT gold version being £10 more expensive in the uk bringing it to £60, carts in those days were expensive, none in comparison to those neogeo carts which was well out my league.

@liammiller18: ...but which one was cooler?

I have the gold lenticular cart! ...Actually, I think I forgot to beat that game, I don't remember the ending! Guess its time to go dig it up.

I have a golden OoT cartridge and a MM with a sticker.
Didn't know those cartridges were rare though.

personally, i REALLY hope they continue that tradition that they've skipped recently, and release Zelda Wii in a gold box. that would be AWESOME.
