Probably GBC. It's a great little portable machine. Some of its games however are available on the 3DS VC. Some N64 games are available through the Wii VC only.
Never actually played the N64 with its odd looking controller. Happily owns a GBC.
if you consider buying a gameboy colour than you should consider buying a GBA SP instead. it has clashell to protect screens and very good backlight. plays all gb and gbc games plus gba games
Go with the N64. The GBC has some good games, but there are much better options on later handhelds. The N64 has that quality experience you can't get anywhere else (except for, well, the Gamecube). The control is wonky, but you do get used to it, and there's tons of great games to purchase. Goldeneye 007, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64, Yoshi's Story, F-Zero X, Mario Party 2, Super Smash Bros., Toy Story 2 (sounds weird, but trust me on that one), Kirby 64, Paper Mario, Wave Race 64, Doom 64, 64 64 64.
There are definitely others I forgot to mention, but it's got a stash of truly amazing games that are definitely worthwhile to play.
is the portability a factor? do you want to game anywhere? we need more information on you personally. games, value, fun factor, lasting appeal? they both have all four in spades. value is especially subjective as these are retro consoles now, we don't know how much you'll be paying. they're both incredibly fun and will last as long as the machines can turn on.
if you want a console, N64. if you want a portable, GBC.
to me who has N64 and a GBA and a GBA SP get both
GBA you can play with GB,GBC,and GBA games but if you want one get a sp
also if you get a N64 you can play with some nice games like
super mario 64 and a lot more
if you are on the go a lot get a GBA SP
if not get a N64
or just get both you want be sorry

Gameboy color as a console is a thing of beauty, and its see through carts are my fave ever looking carts. But as far as gameplay goes, its exclusives don't come close to what the N64 had. Besides you could probably pick upa GBC for $10 if you shopped around.
..and Plumbings our game.... https://youtu.be/Vxj_ARoHiu4 Black Arrow Game Talk Episode One is now Live
N64 for sure. Tons of games that weren't mentioned - Ocarina of Time for best Zelda ever, Majora's Mask because coolest/weirdest Zelda ever, Quest 64 is fun, Ogre Battle 64 is great, Perfect Dark for #1 FPS ever (Combat Simulator, not main game)
Blast Corps for crazy demolition antics, Bomberman 64 for best Bomberman game ever, Vigilante 8 for car antics, Mortal Kombat Trilogy for prime MK experience, Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart 64 for two of the best kart racers ever, original Paper Mario, Harvest Moon, Wave Race 64 gets another mention for best jet ski game ever, Pilotwings 64 for fun gyrocopter missile launching mayhem… I can continue, but I think you know what I'd choose.
N64 is honestly my favorite console ever. Maybe Wii would tie since I get a good chunk of N64 on VC plus Gamecube and Wii playability.
Heh... I ended up just getting a Wii U. I lost all interest in N64/GBC recently, but Gamecube will always be king. Really, this thread has no point anymore.
Now if you had made it a contest between Game Boy Advance and N64...the Game Boy Advance wins on pure volume of amazing first and third party titles, the GBA is practically SNES levels of godly library...and owning one is why I never actually bought my own DS and waited till 3DS.
Gameboy color has some great titles, and it's backwards compatible with the regular GB games, but GBA is compatible with all those games plus it's own massive library.
Forget Gameboy color...GET A GBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(SP model)
