Super Mario World with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 not far behind.

On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. 'Tis a very silly place.

Being a lifelong genre-fan, I can't name a favourite one as I've played so many sidescrolling platformers over the years. If I have to name the best one, it's definitely Super Mario Bros. 3 for NES. The one I have the most nostalgic feelings for is Commander Keen in Goodbye Galaxy for PC. Try it on hard, it's brutal!

Goodbye Galaxy was suuuuch a great game!!! Man I completely forgot that series existed until that reference...

Favorite 2D platformer is hard though....if it's in terms of total time put in, it'd probably be between the original Contra, Contra 4 (assuming run'n'gun isn't too radically different from standard 2D platformer) for DS, and Castlevania 3.

I gotta say that Plok for the SNES is way up on the list though...I love that game. GREAT music!

Oh man. Plok is a game that needs a vc release. I never finished that game when I was younger. If I remember correctly, there was no save feature, so if you turned it off you had to start from the start. So a vc release would make it easier. I also used to love the first Commander Keen on the old computer. Probably the first platform game I played it think. Would love to play it again.

Super Mario World would probably be my favourite, closely followed by its sequel and DKC. More recently though, I thought Wario Land: Shake It! was pretty awesome.

Haven't quite finished it 100% yet. About 4 or 5 tasks left to do. And yes they are HARD. Especially the tasks in that level when you're going up in that rocket thing the whole time! Yeah it's one of my favourite Wii games too. It's easy to finish the game, but to do everything is a real challenge. Does anything good happen when you complete everything?

For me SMB3, SMW, or Kirby and the amazing mirror.

I concur with Swerd_Murd, Plok is a great game. It's one of my favorite hard games (much more challenging than Super Ghouls'n Ghosts, Mr. Nutz, and Cool Spot [individually] {all four games being good, imo}). Tim and Geoff Follin music FTW!!! Still need to beat Normal mode.

Just go to a DOS games website and download Commander Keen 1 and Commander Keen 4 (the two free episodes in the series's shareware system). You'll probably also need DOSBox.

I agree that the Commander Keen series has great games. It took me years, but I finally figured out how to beat every level on Commander Keen 4 without cheating (including the secret level, which required liberal use of the save system for me to beat), although I've only managed to do it on the Easy difficulty.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
