I prefer isometric. I've played many Japanese RPGs where you move around vast areas defeating enemies and solving tasks, meeting people and using items along the way. It really gets you into the game.
The Paper Mario series somehow remains fun despite being a sidescroller. Maybe that's because Mario belongs in sidescrollers?
With very few exceptions, I cannot play top-down RPGs (the main exception being A Link to the Past). They're just too predictable and are all the same.

Don't care as long as it's a good game. Paper Mario is a Sidescroller, I must travel back and finish that game, seems like it was not a sidescroller to me for some reason.
Most of Paper Mario involved going left and right. There were some areas where you could go in other directions, but it's not like Legend of Zelda where you can go in all directions.

Paper Mario is not a sidescroller! Zelda is not an RPG, it's an Action-Adventure game with very mild RPG elements.
I'm not one for RPGs, well actually that's a lie I'd love to be, but I just can't do turn-based gaming it bores me and I find it extremely silly. Paper Mario and Pokemon are about as far as I can go into that turn based genre, blek! I need to try some action RPGs sometime really.
I prefer RPG's like Oblivion (which was outstanding), and wish we had more like that. zelda wii ;P
Talking about turn based rpgs I just read some customer reviews of Final Fanasy 13 on Amazon and everyone is complaining about how you just sit there repeatedly pressing one button and watching everying happen for you. It's funny. Your average Joe must have been expecting something else. What they probably don't realise is that the beautiful challenge of the game doesn't really kick in until you've played it for at least 30 hours. Still that ould probably leave them completely shocked. lol
I like 'em overhead with pixel art graphics the most. On a console, though, I prefer third-person.
@Machu: Yes, Paper Mario is a sidescroller. It scrolls from side-to-side, so that makes it a sidescroller. Yes, you can move around in three dimensions, but it's still a sidescroller. :3
Pokémon's about the only RPG I can get into, and then only the mainstream and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon ones. So, overhead. EDIT: Wow I just totally forgot about M&L and Paper Mario. HOW DARE I. So, I like those ones too, whatever you'd classify Paper Mario as. 3D. Except Super Paper Mario, but that has 3D and isn't as much of an RPG (although it has about twice as much talking as one)
@pixinator: Dude, I know what you're saying, but I'm definitely not traveling sideways whilst heading North or South in Toad Town or the Desert, or many other areas in the game. :/
I've liked pretty much any kind of RPG, be it overhead, isometric, third person, first person, etc. The only ones I don't like are the typing adventures.
Best thread ever
