Topic: PS3: Is "Just For You" supposed to be useful?

Thought I'd do some window shopping on PSN through my PS3 today. Had a glance at the "Just For You" section. I buy physical for PS3, but I thought I might get a decent recommendation on an indy or a hidden JRPG gem or something based on my PSP, Vita, and PS1/PS2 classics purchases. Nope.

Because you bought Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles:

  • Call of Duty: Blacks Ops 2
  • Destiny
  • Dishonored
  • The Last of Us
  • Grand Theft Auto V

Because you bought P.T.:

  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Dishonored
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  • The Last of Us
  • Destiny

Best selling PS3 games:

  • Dishonored
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 (???)
  • Destiny
  • Grand Theft Auto V

I'm starting to think that the Just For You section isn't just for me at all.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

It is even worse on the PlayStation 4!

My best advice for you is to just simply ignore it; it is too far early in this current generation to be able to list a relevant cluster of (recommended) titles. The only thing that is almost right is the 'best selling on PS3' line-up, which is partly true.

Isn't that the case in most online store. I hardly ever get decent recommendations. One store even always seems to recommend what I already bought.

Steam recommends me any game that has at least a couple positive reviews. Including games I've already bought or wishlisted. Sometimes I have to go down quite a ways before I get to anything new...

But yeah, I tend to ignore the recommendations on PSN and the eShop. I think eBay's the only digital outlet I've seen that actually refines the recommendations pretty well without you having to put in a lot of effort...much to my wallet's chagrin...

The only online store that has an actually rather good "recommendations" list is Steam. Grabted, the pool of games they have is big enough to fill such a list.

But Sonys efforts are laughable at best, especially on the PS4 which has so few titles, that the recommendations page could just be labeled "All Games".
But then again, the PSN itself is probably the worst of all online stores ive purchased stuff from (eShop, XBL Market Place, Steam, GOG, Google Play Store).

Hey man, I think you should buy Dishonored, Destiny, Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
(haven't played any of them, not currently planning to either)

It's like youtube's recommendations. You don't want to know some of the crap youtube has recommended.
Like I watch a video about a guy repairing some arcade game PCB, and youtube suggests I watch some ultra-Christian lady ranting. Like WTF did that come from?

That's just how it is with recommendation stuff like this. They just tend to tell you the biggest titles, or whatever is mildly popular. I never pay attention to them. If you want recommendations for games, I say just ask around online and get answers from actual people.

Recommendations have basically a 100% fail rate with me on every single thing ever. Stupid PSN tells me all my games relate to The Last of Us even when it makes absolutely no sense at all, it even told me after I finished Persona 4 that I should get Last of Us. It only recommends like 5-7 games total.
The 3DS recommends only stuff I've already bought physical versions of and if I press to suggest DL games only, it gives me stuff I know I do not want.

As @ogo79 said, the SNS-RZ-USA is a prime giveaway that it's not a legit retail cart.
And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)
