Topic: Ideas for future portables.

We've got lots of choices for portable gaming devices: Some dedicated (DSi, PSP) and some not (iEverything, Mobile "phones", etc.) There's a new Nintendo handheld coming out sooner (3DS) and a Sony handheld coming out later (PSP2/NGP). We've probably all dabbled in at least one of these devices.

What ideas do you have to make future handheld gaming devices better? What are some of the newly introduced features of the upcoming devices that you think should be considered "standard" on all devices in the future? What makes the perfect gaming device, perfect?

I was talking with a coworker today and had this idea: Have ya'll ever seen those special Blu-Ray movies that include the blu-ray version of the movie, the standard dvd version of the movie, and the digital download all in one case? I would love to see future games/consoles/portables have something similiar and it would look a little something like this: The game disc would be used in the main console and there would be another disc/cartridge/download/memory card/etc that would be used in the protable. You could play the main game at home, pause it and send the game to your handheld where you could pick up right where you left off while at an appointment or on a road trip, etc, and then send the game right back to the console to finish playing when you got back home.

Here's an example to illustrate: I'm playing God of War 3 on my PS3 and I'm about to begin a pivotal battle when I get a phone call to head into the city for a meeting. ARRRGH! I turn on my PSP and then I bring up the GoW3 pause menu on my PS3 and select the "Send to PSP" option. I grab my PSP, head out the door and hop on the train for the two hour ride to the city. While on the train, I finish my battle and continue on to the next level. When I get home later that night, I bring up the pause menu on my PSP and then send the game straight back to the PS3 where I continue on with my same GoW3 game.

I like the idea of one game working on both a handheld and a portable a lot. It probably won't happen with Nintendo, because the controls for their console and portable are too different, and the way they sync their console/portable release dates will mean one system is always significantly stronger than the other. I could definitely see this happening with Sony, since the PS3 easily has a few more good years in her.

I'm of the mind that the future will be all digital distribution, so you won't even need multiple copies. You'll just need to sync your accounts. What I'd really like to see is enough storage on portable devices to make this viable. No more carrying around game cards ftw!

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

its called the iPlay. it has it essentially like the iTouch but with L and R buttons like that of the PSP. Also its screen is slightly squarer because on each side there are illuminated button-thingys that turn off and you cant see them and then turn on and you can. It would have an analog stick-esque on the left and A,B,X,Y on the other 9also illuminated buttons. It would also have a start button and a Pause button which literally freezes the screen. at the bottom there'd be 4 8mm headphone jacks for chargers aswell. the back would be grippy, it would have 2 cameras a usb port and an sd card slot. Get all of that? no? neither did i.

Even though we still know little about it, a handheld with a similar device to the vitality sensor might be good. It could be an area where you rest a thumb or finger that measures pulse or temperature.

The next generation of portable will look like a wristwatch, but when you turn it on you will have a 3d hologram in the palm of your hand. Control will be movements and gestures using your free hand.

Actually, I really like the idea of a game being playable both on a console and a portable.

I'll only buy another handheld if it's 4D.

Anything less is just silly.

Both 2D and 3D are old hat by now. The real innovation would be 1D gaming.

There is a strong argument that we live in a 4D world, because all it is, is a 3D object moving through time. (Though, we really can't classify the dimension we live in, but 4D pretty much sums it up) So in simple terms, Street Fighter 4D on the 4DS would create a real Ryu that is constantly moving around. (I think)

So then in order to have a 4DS it would have to have a feature that let's us travel through time to solve puzzles and stuff.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Starring the great title, Dots.

Followed by its sequel, Points.

Wouldn't that be great.. Your friends would be like "Hey what happened, you get in a fight?"

You'd be all like "Nope, just playin' some Street Fighter.."

Given the industries ever growing need to expand its market through better tech, more accessible controls, etc its seems only natural the next gen will involve inflatable doll technology.

Except there is a difference between 4 dimensions and 4 spatial dimensions. All dimensions live within each other, but we cannot actually view a 4 dimensional object, but theoretically, we can see a 3 dimensional projection of a 4 dimensional object.
Also, if you count time as the fourth dimension, we are not 4 dimensional creatures as we cannot move freely through time.

@Ravage
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm a not that great at explaining or knowing the dimensions.

@Magi.... I think the start of this is in the works at the moment. The PS3 has already been playable via Remote Connection with the PSP since not too long before launch. PSone game in the system can be played remotely with the PSP, and Lair can be played remotely with the PSP as well.

Portal 2 for the PS3 will include a Steam Download and cross-platform play with 360 and PC gamers.

The real kicker is this one. A recent interview we did over at Movemodo with Trendy Games about their upcoming game Dungeon Defenders revealed that the upcoming PSN game will include cross-platform play. We later uncover that the cross-platform play will not only include PS3, 360 and PC cross-platform play, but will also include iOS and Android cross-platform play as well.

This will be the first time that PC, PS3, 360, iOS and Android systems will all be playing together online at the same time. Trendy Games already has it up and running and it works. The game is shaping up nicely and looks to be a game to watch out for.
